Industry leaders set for specialist EV event

Many of the UK’s leading insurers, vehicle manufacturers and vehicle repairers are set to discuss how electric vehicles (EVs) are set to change motor claims at ARC360s specialist EV event.

Amongst some of the leading names set to attend include insurers Aviva, esure and Zurich; vehicle manufacturers Stellantis, Tesla and Toyota; and repair groups Halo ARC, Fix Auto UK and Steer Automotive. 

The event, sponsored by Control Expert and Thatcham Research, along with ARC360 Corporate Partners and Partners, takes place on Tuesday 4 July at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), Coventry.

Gemini sets the standard

Gemini Accident Repair Centres has announced that 15 of its sites have now achieved the new BS10125:2022 repair standard.

Gemini Macclesfield and Chesterfield are the latest to be accredited, joining Redruth, Rotherham, Telford, Manchester, Cannock, Wakefield, Bodmin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nuneaton, Nottingham, Spalding, and Peterborough.

Copart shows support for Pride Month

EVs drive Volvo sales surge

Volvo Cars has reported a 31% increase in global sales in May, driven primarily by the sale of its electric models.

The manufacturer sold 60,398 units in the month to take its annual total to 275,312, a 14% increase on the same period during 2022, while sales of its fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars rose 55% to account for 40% of all sales.

Repairify to unveil new diagnostics solution

Repairify is set to release a new diagnostics, calibrations, and programming solution for local and remote diagnostics.

The asTech All-In-One tablet-based solution, due for release on 12 June, will enable bodyshops to identify repairs and carry out remote and local calibrations.

Postcode lottery when it comes to EV techs

New research by The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has revealed significant location gaps in qualified technicians to work on electric vehicles.

It found that only seven local authorities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have 10% or more EV-qualified technicians while more than 150 have less than two per cent.

ADAS safety ratings revealed

Euro NCAP and Thatcham Research have released the latest ADAS safety ratings, with the Alfa Romeo Tonale getting a ‘moderate’ score while the Nissan Ariya and Renault Astral were both rated ‘very good’.

Jaguar Land Rover unveils new unifying identity

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled its new corporate identity as it brings Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar together under one roof.

What Car? tackles EV fire fears

What Car? has questioned fears that EVs are more likely than petrol or diesel vehicles to catch fire.

It has cited results of a Freedom of Information request submitted by Air Quality News that revealed the London Fire Brigade tackled 54 EV fires in 2019, compared with 1,898 fires involving petrol or diesel cars.

Stellantis to set up new recycling venture

Stellantis and leading metals recycler Galloo havesigned a Memorandum of Understanding to negotiate the formation of a joint venture focused on End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) recycling.

The service is expected to launch at the end of 2023 with an initial focus on France, Belgium and Luxembourg, before expanding across Europe.

New vehicle sale surging

Both the new car and new light commercial vehicle markets have enjoyed consecutive months of growth, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

It found that new car registrations grew 16.7% in May to 145,204 units, making it 10 months of continuous growth.

Meanwhile, LCV registrations grew by 15.3% in May compared to last year, reaching 25,359 units, making it the fifth consecutive month rising sales.

Apprenticeship demand on the increase

Apprenticeship Central has reported a large increase in businesses looking to take on apprentices this year.

Apprenticeship Central offers a comprehensive recruitment and retention outsource solution through three services: Recruit; Nurture; and Ensure.

It says demand has increased in single- and multi-skilled programmes, as well as those for VDAs.

Breaking it down, it has revealed that 55% of technical vacancies are for repair technician apprentices, 25% are for panel apprentices, 15% for paint apprentices and five per cent for MET apprentices.

Jake Watson, who leads the Recruit programme, said, “This year has seen a significant rise in our clients wanting to recruit young people across a whole range of apprenticeships. By far the most popular vacancies are for the known single-skill and multi-skill technical programmes but we are seeing increased interest in the VDA programme and we are also attracting candidates for parts and customer service apprenticeship/trainee roles too.”

He continued, “The key benefit of our Recruit programme is to give every candidate a personal experience, primarily though our online Pre Employment Programme (PEP). Because we are communicating with young people and because we are using a unique digital platform, we are creating a much bigger candidate pool than traditional methods and our candidates are fully engaged with the process.”

Company founder Bob Linwood added, “It’s absolutely clear though that there is a high level of interest from young people. It just goes to prove that the vehicle repair industry is a viable career path when many employers have traditionally believed it’s difficult to attract young people to the sector.”

New vehicle sales surging

Both the new car and new light commercial vehicle markets have enjoyed consecutive months of growth, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

It found that new car registrations grew 16.7% in May to 145,204 units, making it 10 months of continuous growth. Year-to-date sales have now risen to 772,454 units, which is 16.8% up on the first five months of last year.

Alternatively-fuelled vehicles continue to drive increases, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rising 23% in May to reach a 6.2% market share and hybrids (HEVs) growing 22.2% to comprise 12.3% of all registrations. Electric vehicles are up 58.7% on last May, with 24,513 joining the roads to secure a 16.9% market share.

Meanwhile, LCV registrations grew by 15.3% in May compared to last year, reaching 25,359 units, making it the fifth consecutive month rising sales.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “After the difficult, Covid-constrained supply issues of the last few years, it’s good to see the new car market maintain its upward trend and the fact that growth is, increasingly, green growth is hugely encouraging. Transforming the market nationwide, however, and at an even greater pace means we must increase demand and help any reticent driver overcome any concerns about electric vehicles. This will require every stakeholder – industry, government, chargepoint operators and energy companies – to play their part, accelerating investment to drive decarbonisation.”

Volvo sales volumes surge

Volvo Cars has reported a 31% increase in global sales in May, driven primarily by the sale of its electric models.

The manufacturer sold 60,398 units in the month to take its annual total to 275,312, 14% increase on the same period during 2022. 

Sales of its fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars rose 55% to account for 40% of all sales, with upticks reported in Europe (40%), the US (14%) and China (49%).

Meanwhile, the Volvo XC60 was the top-selling model with sales of 18,052 cars, followed by the XC40, (17,596) and the XC90 (9,058).

Gemini celebrates six of the best

Gemini Accident Repair Group has announced that six Vehicle Damage Assessor (VDA) apprentices have now become IMI-accredited.

They are Gemma Bright (Gemini Redditch), Daniel Ward (Gemini Nottingham), Jacob Ray (Gemini Pensnett), Luke Sargeant (Gemini Worcester), Lewis Walker (Gemini Telford), and Ashley Ablett (Gemini Leeds).

The Gemini apprenticeship includes Audatex certification, an IMI Customer Practitioner Award and GQA Level 3 ADAS Awareness. Delivered with the support of Emtec College, Nottingham College and Bridge Academy, it has also been expanded to focus on customer service to create a ‘multi-skills front of house’ offering.

Adam Jones, Technical Training and Development Co-ordinator, said, “It is a brilliant achievement for the first six VDA Gemini apprentices to have achieved their IMI VDA full accreditation and seeing them all progress over the apprenticeship has been a pleasure.”

Mark Armitage, Head of Membership Products and Services at the IMI, said, “At a time where employers are looking to attract, develop and retain their workforce, it’s fantastic to see the way Gemini have approached this challenge.

“Utilising industry-leading standards and working with partners from across the sector to deliver best practice in workforce development, whilst also fulfilling a real business need, shows innovation and determination. ARC360 event to deep dive into EV data

GT Motive and Davies confirm new collaboration

GT Motive has announced a new partnership with Davies which will see the two organisations share insights, technology and expertise to develop a more streamlined claims and estimating service.

UK automotive industry in ‘recovery mode’

The latest car market overview produced by cap hpi has revealed an automotive industry in recovery mode.  

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that sales in April were up 11.6% on the same month last year, while sales for the first four months of the year are 16.9% higher than in 2022. 

Demand for used cars also remains healthy, with retailers reporting a stronger than expected demand in the first three months of 2023.

Manufacturing moving in right direction

Car manufacturing increased for the third month in a row in April with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reporting a 9.9% increase to 66,527 units.

Meanwhile, commercial vehicle output is nine per cent up year-to-date after a 33% surge in April to 10,504.

Thatcham Research has underlined the growing need to repair rather replace headlamps in its new Headlamp Repair Guide.

Based on in-depth analysis of vehicle headlamp specifications, complexities, technologies, and typical damage, the new guide consolidates repair options in one place, and identifies key components often suitable for repair.

BASF updates sustainability strategy

BASF is updating its sustainability assessment method TripleS (Sustainable Solution Steering) to accelerate and enhance its commitment to the climate. As part of this, it is now re-evaluating all its 45,000 products.

2030 target ‘too much, too early’

The National Franchised Dealers Association has warned that the government’s target toend the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030 is ‘too much, too early.’

It has called for a more ‘balanced’ incremental increase in electric cars and vans, and said continued government support for the switch to electrification is critical to buyer demand.

IMI predicts ticking ADAS time-bomb

A new report from the Institue of the Motor Industry estimates the ADAS skills gap in the UK to be between 3,000 and 9,000 technicians at the moment, and warns that this could rise to 51,000 by 2030.

Synetiq rallies behind Covea charity drive

Synetiq donated two vehicles to Covéa Insurance for its Benidorm or Bust charity rally in aid of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. The company also made a donation to support the event.

AEG update

Solera Audatex has announced its latest AudaEnterpriseGold release, adding 127 new and updated model sheets to the vehicle database.

Labour times, part numbers and paint and material costs are available for all models.

Plunky’s All-Stars on target

Plunky’s All-Stars Charity football match took place at Peterborough United’s London Road Stadium this week, raising nearly £20,000 for The Norfolk Hospice.

Organiser Steve Plunkett, who scored a penalty with the last kick of the match, said, “The support has been incredible for this very special occasion in memory of Mike ‘Yorkie’ York.”

Managing claims for maximum benefits 

The moment of a claim is often regarded as the moment of truth for insurers, but in order to handle them safely, effectively and efficiently, many moving parts in the supply chain need to work together.

“Drivers want to know when their vehicle will be ready. Repairers want to ensure they’re making best use of capacity and resources. Insurers want greater transparency and efficiency so they can create a better customer experience and manage claims costs.

“An optimal workflow that connects everyone involved in the claim, including salvage companies, parts providers and replacement vehicle providers, is essential and technology sits at the heart of those connections.

“When done right, we see better communication and collaboration between insurers, OEMs, bodyshops and all the other industry professionals, leading to a far smoother process.

“The need for labour-intensive phone calls and rekeying to update other suppliers and their technology systems is far reduced. All the data is available at the touch of a button and integrates with their existing software and management systems.

“It creates smoother processes that enhance the customer experience. Better image capture allows for quicker decisions. The replacement car company can automatically extend rental periods if required. Reliable aggregated data ensures everyone sees the same information.

“The digital journey reduces costs and admin. It creates a single connected and secure ecosystem. It facilitates a self-service experience for the driver, who can just log on to their account and see how their repair is progressing.

“Our conversations with bodyshops and other providers in the supply chain continually bring up the need for better operational efficiency as well as data transparency. The industry has progressed but there is scope for greater automation.

“Modular systems can fit around existing technology platforms. They automate processes that have historically been done manually without the need to change existing solutions and suppliers.

“Beyond that, they enable a more sophisticated digital experience that is more relevant to today’s tech-savvy customer.”

Automation means everybody wins, from the insurer to the bodyshop to the customer. 

Digital connectivity can bring efficiencies to all connected parties by removing the manual resource-driven processes, but it’s critical we are sharing the same information so there is a single version of the truth. 

We continue to make available the CAPS platform for all to connect and communicate with each other, and the reason we re-platformed CAPS (V3) was to facilitate greater communication amongst the supply chain. Unfortunately, there are some that continue to control communication by limiting connectivity, which strangles the open connectivity that the industry needs to constantly remain agile. 

But using the correct systems and connectivity to support automated communications helps both insurer and bodyshop to become more efficient because the quality of data and communication in addition to the speed of updates when using CAPS removes friction. 

Speed of communication also gives businesses a competitive advantage and one area that we’ve seen develop is the increased requests for more businesses to develop their digital strategy, to utilise and consume a wider array of data fields and then use the data for analytics. Managing claims and then maximising them means first of all reducing collisions, and then leveraging the latest technology to accelerate claims when collisions to occur. 

Solera Mentor by eDriving is an app that does both these things. It reduces the number of claims in the first place by improving driver behaviour through more than 300 micro training modules alongside driver ratings, rewards and gamification. 

But when there is a claim it makes every minute count by sharing data between everyone, so there are no challenges or delays because it’s all within a single family on a single platform. The average cost of motor claims in the UK has risen from £1,387 in 2013 to £2,485 last year, so greater efficiency really matters. 

Embedded within the app, Automatic Collision Detection technology instantly detects collisions and automatically informs both the insurer and, where necessary, the emergency services.  

Boasting 100% detection of crashes over 30mph, 98.7% detection of crashes between 10-30mph plus a 99.1% suppression of false positive detections, the technology is able to accurately record the nature of the collision and then steer accurate triage through the Driver Event Reporting page. 

Driver Event Reporting includes a series of incident-specific fields for the driver to fill in, with photo evidence requested using Guided Image Capture. 

Based on telematics data captured during the incident, alongside information provided by the driver and the accompanying images, Mentor is able to assess the vehicle damage and produce a pre-estimate within just three minutes, with a final estimate taking typically 10-12 minutes.

Thatcham Research shines light on headlamp repairs

Thatcham Research has underlined the growing need to repair rather replace headlamps in its new Headlamp Repair Guide.

It argues that the technology within headlamps has advanced so dramatically that replacement can now cost as much as eight per cent of the car’s value; and this will only increase as more tech, like LiDAR and cameras, is added.

The new guide, based on in-depth analysis of vehicle headlamp specifications, complexities, technologies, and typical damage, consolidates repair options in one place, and identifies key components often suitable for repair.

For example, it reveals that 65% of the top 10 carmakers offer a headlamp mounting bracket repair kit designed to replace the headlamp mounting bracket, which could save thousands of pounds, while an increasing number of carmakers are also making replacement lenses available.

“Thatcham Research’s engineers have collated this research data into the Headlamp Repair Guide that vehicle repairers can use to accurately reinstate an existing lighting unit, rather than replace it – to mitigate rising insurance costs and total losses.

“Our repair guidance highlights best market practices and gives Vehicle Damage Assessors the information they need to embrace sustainable repair methods rather than sending a defunct lighting unit straight to landfill.”
