Government unveils ZEV Mandate targets

The Department for Transport has revealed plans to ensure all cars sold in the UK are zero emission by 2035.

The new Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold to be zero emission by 2030, rising to 100% by 2035. Meanwhile, from next year, 22% of all cars sold must be zero emission.

Supporting this, the government is also accelerating the development of a public EV infrastructure. This year 43% more charging points were built compared to 2022 as it moves towards its target of 300,000 charge points by 2030.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said, “Our mandate provides certainty for manufacturers, benefits drivers by providing more options and helps grow the economy by creating skilled jobs. We are also making it easier than ever to own an electric vehicle, from reaching record levels of charge points to providing tax relief for EV owners.”

To further support EV uptake, the government is offering a plug-in van grant of up to £2,500 for small vans and £5,000 for large vans until at least 2025, while people living in flats can also apply for a £350 grant to install a home charging point.

New car sales approach 2019 peak

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Britain’s new car market continues to recover, fuelled by fleets investing in the latest and greenest new vehicles. With car makers gearing up to meet their responsibilities under new market legislation, and COP28 currently underway, now is the time to take sensible steps that will multiply that economic growth and minimise carbon emissions. Private EV buyers need incentives in line with those that have so successfully driven business uptake – and workable trade rules that promote rather than penalise the transition.”

The future in Focus: Managing ADAS

The rise and rise of ADAS has placed a huge strain on skills in vehicle repair. With demand only growing, correct diagnostics and calibration is becoming absolutely critical to the sector.

Here, as part of ARC360’s Future in Focus editorial theme, Phil Peace, Managing Director (SVP) International, Repairify, considers the implications of widespread adoption of ADAS and how Repairify is helping to future-proof the industry.

Over the last few years, the number of ADAS systems within vehicles has dramatically increased as this technology now comes as standard on most vehicles that come off the production line. This means that the number of vehicles that will require calibration will continue to increase.

But will the industry be able to handle all this work? At this moment in time, according to the latest data from the IMI’s ADAS TechSafe Technician Forecasts, the industry would require 18,000 technicians to meet current ADAS requirements. However, if we look at the actual number of qualified technicians there are currently only around 3,500.

We know this is a huge challenge to overcome but it is where companies such as Repairify are important. Our proprietary technology provides services to diagnose, calibrate and programme systems remotely supported by our IMI-trained technicians, who will assist where organisations don’t have such resources locally to do the work.

In addition, our growing global solutions include access to the development of AI and machine learning to enhance our data enabling us to ensure information and solutions are available at the right time in the workflow or shop processes, providing customers with the ability to access critical repair information at their fingertips.

Alongside using third parties to do the work, there are ways in which businesses can help bridge the gap. This is done through apprenticeships and training programmes that are supported by the Apprenticeship Levy and various support schemes that are available. We are also seeing businesses investing in their apprenticeship and training programmes.

This is a positive step because they understand the benefits it will enable them to reap in the short, medium and long term.  As a business, we are also committed to investing in training programmes both internally for our team and externally for our customers.

This is because we understand in no uncertain terms that it will assist in providing our team and the industry with the skills that are needed to keep pace with the work hitting the workshop floor and the knowledge to understand the technology within the vehicles that are coming off the production line.

Overall, we know the ADAS skills gap is real and with the right investment in tools, training and apprenticeships the sector can slowly start to fill the gap, but based on current statistics it will help, but not be enough, to meet the amount of technicians required to handle the amount of work relating to ADAS that is hitting workshop floors in the future.

SYNETIQ considers green parts inflation

Following up questions posed by delegates during October’s Exclusive Motor Claims Conference, SYNETIQ has addressed the availability and price of green parts as well as EV battery recycling.

How do you see demand and supply for green parts affecting price?

We have seen cost price inflation across every part type and provider and green parts is no different. Green parts pricing is driven by multiple factors including the cost of vehicles themselves, labour, energy and fuel.

At SYNETIQ we provide a clear and transparent approach to the pricing of our green parts. We follow a fixed pricing model resulting in a savings of up to 75% off the RRP price for our customers.

Our pricing model will remain transparent and consistent to ensure our clients and customers can budget effectively.

Using demand data, and a “ring-fencing” approach, we are constantly striving to maximise the availability of our inventory to our clients and customers requirements.

How do we stop EV battery disposal from being wasteful?

As it stands, the industry is not fully aligned around a solution to the reuse, repurposing and recycling of EV batteries. This presents an opportunity for us as a leading vehicle recycler to drive forward a potential solution. However, we can’t do this alone. We must do it together as an industry and we need to act now, particularly following new regulations that have been set in place to monitor the entire life cycle of batteries.

This includes end-of-life requirements and recycling targets which need to be achievable by 2027.

This deadline is not that far away. Key players within the industry need to come forward and we must focus our efforts together to work towards the goal of preventing wasteful battery disposal.

There is of course the route of reuse and safe resale of batteries. We supply customers with batteries to power barges using solar panels as an alternative sustainable energy source. We’re also looking at how we can integrate the use of batteries as a power source within our own facilities.

The opportunities for the reusing of batteries are endless as long as they are deemed safe. Battery recycling needs to be made a priority and more needs to be done to create a solid circular solution that is specific to the automotive supply chain.
