Car and CV sales both up in May

New car registrations grew by 1.7% to 147,678 units in May, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

This means the new car market has grown for 22 months in a row, although it remains 19.6% down on May 2019 figures.

Growth was driven by 14% and 9.5% increases in fleets and businesses, offsetting a 12.9% fall in retail sales.

Across the sector, plug-in hybrid sales were up 31.5%, hybrids rose 9.6% and pure electric increased 6.2%.

Meanwhile, sales of new light commercial vehicles rose by 19.9% in the month, with 25,853 units were sold.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “As Britain prepares for next month’s general election, the new car market continues to hold steady as large fleets sustain growth, offsetting weakened private retail demand. Consumers enjoy a plethora of new electric models and some very attractive offers, but manufacturers can’t sustain this scale of support on their own indefinitely. Their success so far should be a signpost for the next government that a faster and fairer transition requires carrots, not just sticks.”

Repairify set for Best of Belron

Repairify will underscore its status as a key Belron partner with a scaled-up presence at this year’s Best of Belron, which takes place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11-12 June.

Reparify colleagues will be on hand to demonstrate the company’s portfolio of remote services.

Its patented technology allows customers to scan, calibrate or programme the vehicle by connecting the vehicle over the air to Repairify’s datacentre, which hosts OEM tools, enabling the vehicle to be returned to manufacturers’ specifications.

The technology is supported by Repairify’s team of IMI-certified and trained technicians.

Phil Peace, Managing Director of Repairify’s international division, said, “Our robust global partnership with Belron is testament to the two companies’ commitment to provide high-quality recalibration services to customers. Our technical team is looking forward to demonstrating our offering and patented technology at Best of Belron, reinforcing our aim to support customers in retaining these services inhouse and reducing key-to-key times.”

Fix Auto UK celebrates mental health milestone

Fix Auto UK’s commitment to providing mental health support for all franchise partners has reached a new milestone with 150 colleagues now qualified Mental Health First Aiders.

The network, which reached the landmark after 14 more candidates completed the two-day Mental Health First Aid England tutorial, aims to have at least two people per centre qualified as well as head office staff and key supply partners.

Carl Norton, Fix Auto UK’s Regional Business Manager, who is also the network’s qualified Mental Health First Aid trainer, said, “It’s yet another proud moment for the network. It blows my mind to think here we are, three years on from when we first started talking about the project, that we now have 150 people as qualified mental health first aiders.

“More importantly, the programme is working, too. I have received numerous calls over the last 18 months from candidates who’ve undertaken the course on how they’ve either identified and helped a colleague struggling with their mental health or were actually approached for help. Having someone to talk to is crucial when it comes to mental health support.”
