UK recalls 10 times higher than in 1994

The rate of vehicle recalls has surged tenfold in the last 30 years, according to data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) analysed by The Car Expert.

It found that nearly 1.2 million vehicles from 41 different manufactures have been recalled to date this year.

Of these, almost 1.1 million are passenger cars and if the rate continues The Car Expert predicts that 260 recalls will be issued this year.

That is up from just 27 passenger car recalls in 1994.

Voluntary recalls can be issued for non-safety issues, but the DVSA only issues recalls for serious safety concerns, with the severity ranging from adjustments in maintenance schedules to ‘stop driving’ orders.

Stuart Masson, Editorial Director at The Car Expert, said, “Recalls in the UK are a serious matter because the DVSA only issues them when there are safety concerns. This means the potential risks to drivers and passengers are significant if the recall isn’t remedied immediately.

“With the number of recalls increasing year by year, it’s more important than ever for drivers to be informed about the process. Clear, accessible advice is essential so that vehicle owners understand not only the nature of the recall but also the steps they need to take to address the issue. Educating drivers on how to promptly book their vehicles in for repairs and ensuring these problems are resolved swiftly can greatly reduce the risks to road safety.”

Cap hpi data finds EVs written off at half the rate of ICE models

Analysis from cap hpi has found that electric vehicles are written off at less than half the rate of petrol and diesel models.

The study, which looked at data from 2015 to August 2024, revealed that just 0.9% of EVs under five years old have been written off. This compares to 1.89% of petrol and diesel vehicles.

Meanwhile, in the one-year age category, just 0.2% of EVs have been written off compared to 0.4% of petrol and diesel vehicles.

These findings are completely contrary to the common misconception that electric vehicles are more likely to be written off than ICE models due to battery degeneration and high repair costs.

Cap hpi director Jon Clay said, “We work hard to provide an accurate picture of the automotive sector to the industry and consumers alike, from valuation data to provenance checks and trend analysis.

“The motor industry has to collectively address the wave of misinformation around EVs that is present online to enable consumers and fleet customers to make informed and well-balanced decisions about their next vehicle.”

IMI seeks industry input in NOS reviews

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is inviting industry input in a series of National Occupational Standards (NOS) reviews.

The IMI announced in the summer that is reviewing the following standards: Maintenance and Repair – Light Vehicle; Mechanical Electrical and Trim (MET); and Core Automotive – Health & safety.

Phase One of the reviews included making the NOS documents available to view and offer feedback on.

It will now collate and assess the feedback before consulting the industry around potential next steps. Consultations will be mainly electronic, in the form of online surveys and video/telephone conference meetings with CPD certificates issued to those who take part.

IMI warns of dangerous shortage in ADAS-qualified techs

New analysis from The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has revealed that just two per cent of UK technicians are qualified to repair and maintain vehicles featuring Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

ADAS-equipped vehicles now account for 13% of the UK car parc, but there are just 4,425 individuals that are IMI TechSafe registered to work on them.

Kevin Finn, Executive Chair of the IMI, said, “The proportion of ADAS-equipped vehicles has grown from 11% in January 2024 to 13% in July, yet there has not been a similar increase in the proportion of ADAS-trained technicians.

“As the proportion of vehicles featuring ADAS accelerates, ahead of the introduction of fully automated vehicles, it is critical that more technicians are trained to work on vehicles with this technology.”

ADAS is the pre-cursor for fully automated vehicles, which could be on the UK roads as early as 2026 after the Automated Vehicles Bill 2024 received Royal Assent in May 2024.

The IMI launched Level 2 and Level 3 ADAS qualifications in 2022. The IMI TechSafe recognition program provides independent assessment and recognition of the technical competence of technicians working in the UK automotive sector. IMI TechSafe identifies a member’s professionalism and safe working practice in the field of electric vehicles (EV) and other safety-critical vehicle systems such ADAS.

Euro NCAP begins Truck Safe testing

Euro NCAP has begun testing as part of its new Truck Safe programme.

The programme has been introduced to tackle the disproportionate number of truck fatalities across Europe, where trucks represent only three per cent of all vehicles but are involved in almost 15% of road fatalities.

The Euro NCAP Truck Safe rating scheme is a first for the sector and will enable all stakeholders in the freight industry to identify and assess the safety level of trucks. Not only will this deliver enhanced safety for drivers but also create financial and strategic opportunities for those operators that invest in the safest vehicles, making the scheme attractive to insurers, shippers, hauliers and truck makers.

The first seven trucks being tested are the DAF XF, Iveco S-WAY, MAN TGX, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Actros, Renault Trucks T, Scania R-series, and Volvo FH.

Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General Euro NCAP, said, “The new tests will address real-world collisions and encourage manufacturers to fit collision avoidance technologies and improve driver vision.”

Test results will be announced on 20 November.

New study highlights green benefits of repair and reuse strategy

A study commissioned by VRA Certification in collaboration with certified recycler SYNETIQ, an IAA company, has confirmed the significant environmental advantages of repairing damaged vehicles using green parts sourced in the UK.

The study, titled ‘Repair, Reuse, or Replace,’ was also in association with Allianz SE, Oakdene Hollins, and Metsims Environmental Consulting.

It details how the repair of damaged vehicles using green parts is a more climate-friendly alternative to the use of newly manufactured replacement parts.

The research sought to validate the assumption that repairing damaged vehicles with locally sourced green parts results in lower emissions compared to replacing them with new parts.

It focused on four of the most commonly damaged exterior vehicle parts: the front bumper, bonnet, headlight, and front door. These components were subjected to four different repair scenarios to determine the impact on CO2 emissions: Repairing the part in situ at a repair shop; replacing the part with a new component manufactured in Europe; replacing the part with a green part salvaged from an end-of-life vehicle in the UK; replacing the part with a new component manufactured in Asia.

The findings confirmed that using green parts for vehicle repairs significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to using newly manufactured parts (up to 177 kg CO2e saving per repair). The environmental benefits increase the heavier the replacement part used due to the high embodied emissions associated with their production.

Among the scenarios analysed, replacing damaged parts with new ones was identified as the least favourable option in terms of emissions.

Michael Hill, Green Parts Director at SYNETIQ said, “This study provides clear evidence that the repair and reuse of vehicle parts should be the way forward to reduce the automotive industry’s environmental footprint. Through the use of green parts and sustainable practises, we can make an impact on reducing emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change.”

Chas Ambrose, Director at VRA Certification, said, “What this particular study highlights is the truly enormous scale of national and international emission savings that are achievable through a more integrated approach to the repair of damaged vehicles, encompassing more part repair and more part reuse. I believe this report is very timely, with the current focus on Net Zero, the circular economy and forthcoming legislative changes relating to vehicle lifetime circularity.”
