Repair sector urged to act now to secure apprenticeship talents

As exam season nears, vehicle repair employers are being urged to act fast to secure the best young talent through apprenticeships before the summer rush.

According to Apprenticeship Central, a surge in student interest means businesses that recruit early will be best placed to attract high-quality candidates.

Eleanor Baker Barnes, Commercial Director at Apprenticeship Central, said: “We’re already seeing a significant number of candidates reach out to us to discuss apprenticeship routes, and decisions are being made now – employers who move early will have their pick of the very best candidates.”

Recent data shows that 41% of young people exploring post-school options are now considering apprenticeships. With interest peaking during the summer term, Apprenticeship Central sees this as a golden opportunity for employers to future-proof their workforce.

Apprenticeship Central states that ambitious, work-ready individuals want to earn while they learn and are ready to start building their careers, and is warning repairers not to wait until summer, by which time many top-tier candidates may already be placed.

Apprenticeship Central specialises in apprentice recruitment and retention across the vehicle repair sector. Their fully outsourced service takes on the legwork of hiring – from initial business consultation to a tailored recruitment campaign, screening, pre-employment programmes and final interviews.

GPS opens new delivery hub in newbury

The Green Parts Specialists (GPS), a leading green parts supplier, has launched a new delivery hub in Newbury, reinforcing its distribution footprint across the south of England.

The new facility joins GPS’s existing delivery centres in Skelmersdale, Gloucester, and Dumfries, bringing the company’s sustainable vehicle parts operations even closer to customers in the southern region. This move forms part of GPS’s broader strategy to boost regional distribution and reduce environmental impact.

The Newbury hub will serve as a key southern base, enabling GPS to streamline its logistics and eliminate the need for long-distance deliveries from its Skelmersdale headquarters.

Lewis Woolnough, Sales Director at GPS, commented: “By regularly distributing parts to our Newbury hub, we can eliminate multiple long-distance journeys from our Skelmersdale HQ and operate more efficiently and sustainably.

“Not only will the addition of this hub provide a faster and more efficient delivery service to customers in the south of England, but it will also reduce our road miles and help us to lower our carbon footprint.”

GPS has been undergoing significant growth since its acquisition in 2023 by global vehicle remarketing and recycling leader Copart. The Newbury hub is one of the first steps in an ambitious development plan that includes infrastructure upgrades, new equipment, and a wider operational reach.

With demand for green parts increasing across the automotive sector, GPS is positioning itself to meet growing sustainability expectations while maintaining its leadership in the recycled vehicle parts market.

This latest investment highlights GPS’s commitment to both customer service and environmental performance as it continues to scale its green parts distribution across the UK.

Silverlake named leading Hampshire business

Silverlake Automotive Recycling has been recognised as one of the top-performing private companies in the county, earning ‘Leading Hampshire Business’ status in the first-ever Hampshire Limited Report 2025 by Grant Thornton UK Advisory & Tax LLP.

The Southampton-based vehicle recycling centre was ranked 38th in the report for average EBITDA margin, following analysis of Hampshire’s top 599 privately owned firms. The report spotlights companies that demonstrate exceptional financial performance and meaningful contributions to the regional economy. It evaluated businesses over a three-year period using growth in turnover and average EBITDA margin as its key metrics.

Silverlake processes end-of-life vehicles at its Authorised Treatment Facility, achieving an impressive 96.7% recovery rate per vehicle. It supplies quality graded, warranty-assured reclaimed parts, offering an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to new components.

Beyond its green credentials, Silverlake plays a major role in local employment and community support. With more than 160 staff – 73% of whom live within 10 miles of the site – the company plans to create over 60 new jobs as part of its ongoing expansion. It also supports over 25 charities and works closely with emergency services, providing salvage vehicles for training exercises.

Silverlake also sponsors Eastleigh FC’s stadium and collaborates on local community programmes. Its U-Donate-a-Car scheme allows vehicle owners to donate the proceeds from their cars to local charities, aligning sustainability with social impact.

Nigel Le Bas, Corporate Finance Advisory Director at Grant Thornton UK, called Silverlake’s inclusion in the Top 50 “a remarkable achievement,” adding: “It showcases their operational excellence and inspires continued innovation in the motor salvage sector.”

Managing Director, Allen Prebble said: “We’re incredibly humbled by this recognition. We’ve been based in Hampshire for 79 years and are proud to support the local economy. This award is a testament to our team’s dedication, and we’ll continue to invest in our people, our infrastructure and the environment.”

EV Alert introduced to support repair safety

Thatcham Research has launched EV Alert, a new digital tool designed to support safe and efficient Electric Vehicle (EV) repairs by addressing one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: safely handling high-voltage (HV) components.

EV Alert, now available via the escribe platform, gives instant visibility of HV systems before repairs begin. This empowers vehicle damage assessors (VDAs) and bodyshop teams to triage jobs more accurately, assess safety needs, and reduce time spent navigating complex manufacturer documents.

“With just two clicks, technicians can access HV information that might otherwise take hours to locate,” said Dean Lander, head of repair sector services at Thatcham Research. “It enables accurate decision-making during the assessment phase and helps identify critical steps for safe EV handling.”

The service supports a wide range of EVs, including full electric, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel-cell electric, and range-extended vehicles. It simplifies repair instructions into a single, easy-to-navigate table, covering MET, panel, and HV components.

With nearly 2.2 million EVs on UK roads by February 2025 – making up close to seven per cent of all cars – bodyshops are under pressure to adapt to increasingly technical and safety-sensitive work.

Thatcham says EV Alert removes guesswork from the repair process – reducing uncertainty, minimising delays, and ultimately shortening claims cycles.

“Uncertainty during repair planning can slow the process and frustrate repairers, insurers, and owners,” Dean said. “EV Alert eliminates this by providing clear, accessible data, reducing waste and boosting confidence.”

He continued, “We’re committed to ongoing development. By engaging with our customers to understand additional needs, the service will continues to evolve.”

Fix Auto UK expands south coast presence with acquisition of two new sites

Fix Auto UK has further strengthened its position with the acquisition of two new repair centres on the south coast.

The business has acquired the former AD Williams sites in Southampton and Lydd from the appointed administrators, a move that not only grows its portfolio of wholly owned locations to 13 repair centres, but also safeguards 24 skilled jobs within the industry.

The newly acquired sites will now operate as Fix Auto Southampton and Fix Auto Lydd, bringing a combined 27,000sqft of high-specification bodyshop space into the network. These additions strategically reinforce Fix Auto UK’s dominance in the southern region, complementing the existing footprint of 10 well-established centres stretching from Hastings to Penzance.

Fix Auto Southampton will continue under the experienced leadership of Rob Dace, while Fix Auto Lydd will be temporarily overseen by Andy Ramsey, current manager of Fix Auto Crawley, until a permanent appointment is made. The group’s portfolio of wholly and part-owned repair centres is overseen by Group Commercial Director Earle Avann.

Commenting on the acquisitions, Ian Pugh, Group Managing Director for the Advantage Group of Companies, said: “Fix Auto UK is already a well-established repairer along the south coast. These acquisitions further strengthen an area which is vital to us. I am delighted that we were able to move so swiftly and safeguard both businesses.”
