Fix Auto UK makes it a perfect 10

Fix Auto UK has announced that is has acquired the former Fix Auto Blackpool business two years after it moved away from the network, making it the 10th site the network owns outright.

The repair centre originally joined the network in April 2015 after moving to a purpose-built 7,500 sqft building, and then extended into a 12,000 sqft facility in 2021.

Now managed by Craig Gidman with a team of 14, the bodyshop has the capacity to repair up to 100 vehicles a month.

Ian Pugh, Managing Director for Fix Auto UK, said, “Fix Auto Blackpool swiftly assured its position as a highly valued centre within the network and, as ever, it was a sad day when the management decided to pull away from us. It was a decision we respected as, as ever, we maintained close links with the team there and expressed our interest in taking it over should circumstances change. Fortunately, we were given the opportunity and I am delighted to say it is now our 10th wholly owned repair centre.”

Event to set out path ahead for sector

The future of the vehicle repair sector is set to be unveiled at ARC360’s forthcoming ‘future vehicle technology’ themed event, taking place on Thursday 27 June 2024 at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry.

The specialist event is sponsored by Activate Group and Thatcham Research along with Stellantis which will host the ‘Stellantis Zone’ on the day featuring a number of its latest models.

Repair costs and volumes both up in April

The latest data from ARC360 Associate Partner Trend Tracker has revealed that repair costs in April were up 4.7% on the same month last year, while repair volumes showed a 13% increase – although they remain just below levels seen in April 2019 (97%).

The data also found that cycle times in April were 14% down on April 2023, with lead times and key-to-key times down by 12%.

Ageas hosts sustainability workshop for repairers

Ageas has hosted a ‘sustainable motor repairs workshop’ to promote more environmentally-friendly practices within its repair network.

The focus of the day was promoting repair over replace, and the wider adoption of green parts in repair.

Court backs wider access to VM data

A court ruling in Germany has backed up a previous decision by the European Court of Justice that ensures wider access to technical vehicle manufacturer data for the independent automotive aftermarket.

The Regional Court of Cologne found in favour of Automotive Data Publishers Association member Belron in a decision which aims to promote fair competition in the industry.

Euro NCAP unveils Truck Safe test protocols

Euro NCAP has released new test protocols that will support the framework for its new Truck Safe rating scheme.

The Truck Safe rating scheme will enable industry to accurately assess the safety levels of its fleets.

BASF backs WorldSkills with Glasurit brand

BASF will support WorldSkills Lyon 2024 as exclusive sponsor of the Car Painting category, providing its premium refinish paint brand Glasurit to competitors.

S&G Response enhances engineering quality

S&G Response has underlined the benefits it can offer companies who outsource their engineering provisions.

Mirka announces 20% upgrade

Mirka has upgraded its DEROS and DEOS orbital sanders with a long-life electric motor that delivers up to 20% more sanding power.

The tools also feature a new LED indicator to help the operator adjust the sanding speed, as well as a new on/off button and lockable speed function.

Enterprise on target for charity

Nearly £20,000 has so far been raised by Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s inaugural five-a-side charity football tournament in support of Insurance United Against Dementia.

New report calls for skills policy rethink

A report by cross-party think tank Policy Connect, ‘Skills 2030: Building a World Class Skills System’, has urged the next parliament to reform skills policy to ensure the country has a future-proofed workforce.

It calls for further investment in training and education, and removing barriers for young learners.

Stellantis expands parts range

Stellantis has expanded its Eurorepar parts range to include bumpers. The range will initially launch for brands such as Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall vehicles, with plans to exceed 100 product variants, once all brands are launched.

ACG goes live with new site

ACG has unveiled its new website to announce a new digital era at the company. The new site is intended to encourage wider engagement with customers and future talent.

Markerstudy unveils Sustainable Supply Chain Charter

Markerstudy is inviting suppliers to demonstrate their commitment to its sustainability targets by signing its new Sustainable Supply Chain Charter.

The charter is the first part of Markerstudy’s Sustainable Supply Chain Programme, which will benchmark suppliers via third-party assessments and then support them in making the necessary improvements.

Mental health concerns driving people away from automotive

One in seven automotive workers are considering leaving the industry for financial reasons and strain on their mental health.

This is according to a new survey by automotive charity Ben, which found that 27% of the 1,872 respondents had challenges managing their mental health in the last 12 months, with stress (56%), poor sleep (51%), anxiety (43%), and low mood (41%) the main issues.

Sales tick up for 21st straight month

Car sales edged up by one per cent in April to 134,274 units, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), with plug-in hybrids up 22.1% and BEVs increasing by 10.7%.

Demand for new light commercial vehicles rose 5.4% to 23,889 units, while the UK’s used car market rose by 6.5% to 1,967,923 units in the first quarter and heavy goods sales fell by 3.9% to 11,068 units.

Businesses call for government support towards net zero

BSI’s fourth annual Net Zero Barometer has found that 96% of UK businesses want government support to help them reach net zero targets, with 48% saying cost is the main obstacle.

It found that 35% have not set targets to achieve net zero by 2050, while 23% don’t believe they will.

RWC hosts training day

RWC Training hosted a hands-on training day for Level 2 and 3 motor vehicle students from Bedford College recently, exposing them to technologies not covered in the course such as hybrid and EVs, ADAS calibration, and new welding techniques.

Stellantis leads Leapmotor International

Stellantis and Leapmotor has received regulatory approval to establish Leapmotor International, a 51/49 Stellantis-led venture that will introduce a range of EVs into Europe from September, expanding through Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America thereafter.

Leapmotor International has been created after Stellantis acquired a 21% stake in Leapmotor, a leading Chinese EV start-up, last year.

Honda sets steep EV targets

Honda has announced plans to make EVs 40% of all global sales by 2030 with more than two million units produced.

This is an interim target as it moves towards 100% EV sales by 2040.

Van drivers tempted by EV switch

New research by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has found that 67% of UK van drivers believe an EV would suit their business needs, with 52% thinking it would be more cost-effective than a petrol or diesel equivalent.

XPENG begins international expansion

Chinese EV manufacture XPENG Motors has launched into Europe with the G9 and G6 models now available in France. The move is a milestone in the brand’s international expansion strategy.

NIO unveils new EV brand

NIO has introduced its new smart electric brand ONVO with the launch of its first product, the L60.

Available to market from the third quarter, the L60 is a mid-size family SUV that can achieve a range of over 1,000km with an ultra long-range battery.

JLR reports record revenues and profits

Jaguar Land Rover has reported record annual revenues of £29bn for the last financial year, with profits of £2.2bn.

This follows fourth quarter revenues of £7.9bn and profits of £661m.

Markerstudy unveils Sustainable Supply Chain Charter 

Markerstudy is inviting suppliers to demonstrate their commitment to its sustainability targets by signing its new Sustainable Supply Chain Charter. 

The charter is the first part of Markerstudy’s Sustainable Supply Chain Programme, which will benchmark suppliers via third-party assessments and then support them in making the necessary improvements.

Paul Sell, Trend Tracker Director, said, “In March there was much debate across the industry about the fall in repair estimate volumes, raising many questions about the price of insurance, higher excess levels, increase in retail repairs under excess levels, increased write-off thresholds and the number of new sites in the sector since the start of the year.  

“Despite all this, April has seen an increase in repair estimate volumes. This could be as a result of how the bank holidays fell at the end of March so not something to react to but promising for all those operating in the sector and pointing more to excess capacity than reducing demand impacting the market.” 

The report also highlighted the lack of availability of skilled staff, and suggested that the one per cent growth in new car sales in April combined with stable volumes around used car sales could be an indicator that the market is getting ‘back to normal’. 

Meanwhile, the sharp increase in insurance premiums recorded during 2023, which led to higher excesses, has slowed into 2024 and in some cases retreated.

Plunkys All Stars break £15k barrier

Support from the Vella Group – amongst many others – has helped take this year’s Plunkys All Stars fundraising total to beyond the £15,000 barrier.

The charity football match will take place on 28 June at the Football Development Centre in Norwich, raising valuable funds for Norfolk and Waveney MIND, East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Fire Fighters Charity.

Organiser Steve Plunkett is hoping to raise upwards of £25,000 from what will be the last match in a charity initiative that has been ongoing for more than a decade, raising more than £100,000 so far for worthy causes.

He said, “We have just broken through the £15k barrier for 2024. It’s just incredible to receive the support once again from the Vella Group, and I’d really like to thank Marc, Karl, Tom and Rachel for getting behind the final Plunks All Stars game.”

Conference highlights opportunities for positive change

ILC’s New Generation in Claims Conference helped highlight the opportunities available to positively influence how the industry can best attract and retain future talent.

Host for the day James Lambert, ILC’s New Generation in Claims Sector Lead and Founder of Engage to Succeed, opened the day’s proceedings by referencing Henry Ford’s quote: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

James added, “Let’s keep that in mind and think about what is possible, how we can change, what’s the cost of not changing, and what could work in your business.”

Claims cost increases surge ahead of premiums

New figures released by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) have revealed that the cost of claims rose eight per cent in the first three months of 2024 compared to a one per cent rise in premiums.

Average cost of a motor claim rose to £4,800 in the first quarter, while average comprehensive car insurance policies are now £635.

Plunkys All Stars raise over £100k

The final Plunkys All Stars football match will take place on 28 June at the Football Development Centre in Norwich, raising funds for Norfolk and Waveney MIND, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and the Fire Fighters Charity.

To date the football matches have raised over £100k for worthy charities.

Ben turns up the heat for next challenge

Ten teams of two will trek across the Sahara Desert in November as part of automotive charity Ben’s Industry Leader Challenge.

Participating teams will navigate about 17 miles a day in temperatures reaching 35 Deg C to raise a minimum of £20,000 each.

Introducing SERMI

A new association has been established to control access to security-related repair and maintenance information (SERMI).

Managed by vehicle manufacturers and repairers, the SERMI Association has been created primarily to combat vehicle theft by approving and monitoring who has access to what information.

BASF 100 Line delivers stellar results

BASF has announced stellar results of its eco-friendly waterborne basecoat, 100 Line, based on data from 1,000 bodyshops in 20 countries that have adopted it.

It reported an average of 40% less process time, 30% less material usage with every application, 20% less consumption, and 50% faster process times.

EV charging prices frozen

The AA EV Recharge Report for March has revealed that electric vehicle charging prices across the public network were frozen across all speeds during the month, compared to a 0.63 pence per litre rise in petrol prices.

BYD profits plummet by nearly 50%

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has reported a £502m (47%) fall in profits in the first quarter of the year.

It sold just over 300,000 units in the first three months of the year compared to 526,000 sales in the same period last year.

Prancing horse unveils V12 models

Ferrari has unveiled the new two-seater Berlinetta and Spider, both of which are powered by a V12 engine that that boasts 830 cv power output, with maximum revs of 9500 rpm.

Aston Martin in the slow lane

Aston Martin has reported that pre-tax losses nearly doubled to £138.8m in the first quarter of the year, with 945 wholesale car sales compared to 1,269 during the same period last year.

No single factor behind falling volumes 

More than a dozen industry experts took part in the third ARC360 Breakfast Think Tank last week, when attention turned to the sudden and dramatic fall in repair volumes in the last few months. 

Voices from repairers, insurers, suppliers and data experts were heard, when it was agreed that there has been a ‘sharp and noticeable fall’ in volumes since mid-February, with no obvious single factor responsible for the drop off. 

Recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed that the UK car parc reached its highest point last year, so it is not a case there are fewer cars on the road. 

Costs 

However, although frequency of incidents was back to pre-pandemic levels, the cost of repairs escalated throughout the year as a result of general inflation and more expensive repairs – in some part influenced by more EVs on the road. In combination with strong salvage values, the number of total losses increased proportionally but not exceptionally.  

Further, the continued cost-of-living crisis saw many consumers adjusting policies with increased excesses (£750 average) to lower motor premiums as well as an uplift in third party fire and theft policies being reported. Meanwhile, the number of cash in lieu settlements is suggested to have also gradually increased implicated in part by capacity and parts challenges, meaning those driveable damage repairs have ‘gone’ from the market. The ‘over 10-year-old’ vehicle parc also appears to have reduced in claims numbers. 

All these factors have played a part in falling demand, while at the same time significant investment in the market over the last three to six months has seen repair capacity increase. 

Sudden 

But while all this might go some way to explaining a gradual decline in volume, the sudden fall that has been experienced by many has left the industry scratching its head. 

One attendee said volumes fell by between 10-15% in mid-February, with no data suggesting the slump was regional or brand-specific. However, reports on the volume reduction vary significantly dependent it seems on the book mix and partnership dynamics. 

A milder winter could be a factor, with less newer vehicle work in progress (WIP) coming through the system, and it was also suggested that the repair sector became far more efficient during Covid and is now able to move jobs through the workshop quicker; this is backed up by Trend Tracker data revealing that key-to-key times in the first quarter of 2024 were 25% down on the same period last year. 

Segments 

Interestingly though, the fall in volumes does not appear to extend to all segments of the market. Fleets and commercial vehicles are tracking positively, and the purported reduction in direct repairers is potentially driving an uplift in the retail repair market. Various anecdotal suggestions pointed to an increase in direct customer enquiries with repairers, a rise in dealer activities and an increase in visibility of mobile solutions. 

“It’s only private lines,” said one repairer. 

Whilst all these macro factors are squeezing volumes at one end, at the opposite end the increase in market value over the past few years has seen a marked increase in investment in the sector. More technology has been deployed at the front end of claims by insurers to support customers and assist decision making whilst, of course, at the same time significant investment in the repair sector – not only across the major groups but also with the opening of numerous new regional sites – has created more market capacity. 

The supply/demand dynamic has always trended one way and then another, but traditionally it has been a slow-moving pendulum over a number of years. It appears a raft of factors brought about by extreme economic circumstances have now combined to move the dial much quicker than usual. It was reported that the UK is not alone either, similar reductions have been felt in the US. 

With all the factors in mind, the point was raised: is this decline in repairs going to “really hurt” some bodyshops who not too long ago were hit by the challenges of the pandemic. As one panellist concluded, the market will undoubtedly “require more dynamic decision-making” in the near future.

Vehicle technology conference piques interest

More than 40 of the UK’s most influential names from within insurance are already confirmed to attend ARC360’s specialist ‘future vehicle technology’ conference, taking place on Thursday 27 June 2024 at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry.

  • The Vella Group has acquired Axiom Accident Repair Centres, which comprises two repair sites in Peterborough and Daventry.
  • Whaley Bridge ARC, which is part of the Stellantis approved network, has been recognised as the world’s first carbon negative bodyshop.
  • Turners Accident Repair has signed a 10-year lease on a new 20,000 sqft site in Ripon, Yorkshire. The new facility will add to existing sites in Doncaster, Leeds, and Sheffield.
  • Fix Auto Loughborough has announced that it has secured Stellantis vehicle manufacturer approval.
  • Devonshire Motors ARC has achieved a 100% score in its BMW/MINI audit, retaining the approval it’s held since 2008.
  • Steer Automotive supported Automotive Work Experience Week by inviting Luke Saunders to its site in Portsmouth. He will now begin a MET apprenticeship when he finishes college.
  • Shorade Bristol is officially carbon neutral after achieving the PAS 2060 standard.
  • Revive! is celebrating after four franchisees, East Anglia, Surrey, Northampton, and Trafford, all turned over more than £1m last year.
  • Fix Auto Penzance was named Stellanis Audatex UK Estimator of the Year – Southern Region, ahead of Rackhams Auto Body Centre and Bodytek Taunton.
  • M&L Coachbuilders has passed its initial BS 10125:2022 stage 2 audit.
  • Komoo has opened its first site in the Midlands. Its new Rugby repair facility is its fourth new site of the year.
  • MG Cannon has installed Glasurit’s all-new waterborne basecoat system, Glasurit 100 Line, in all six of its sites.

Fall in premiums only short term

Comprehensive car insurance premiums fell by five per cent to an average of £941 in the last three months, according to the latest Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index produced in association with WTW.

However, this is still 43% (£284) higher than they were 12 months ago.

Automotive industry charity Ben has introduced free mental and physical health checks through one-on-one conversations with a qualified health professional.

The health checks will also suggest positive steps to support better living and working.

ABI unveils Premium Finance Principles

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced a range of new principles to manage consumer costs around premium finance.

The Premium Finance Principles underline what fair practice should look like and revolve around five elements: transparency, affordability, fair value, proportionality and accountability.

Emissions down despite growing car parc

The UK car parc hit a new high last year, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealing the number of cars on UK roads rose by 1.7% to 41,404,589.

However, with almost half a million EVs and plug-in hybrid registered, average CO2 emissions per car dropped by 2.1%.

Automotive production suffers March dip

UK car production fell by 27.1% to 59,467 units in March, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Meanwhile, commercial vehicle output was down by 19.2% in the same month.

Denso launches aftermarket brand

Mobility supplier Denso has unveiled a new standalone aftermarket brand, MobiQ, which will be dedicated to new digital smart mobility products that can be retrofitted to improve driver safety.

Government launches future skills inquiry

The Industry and Regulators Committee is seeking views from industry about what skills will be needed in the future and how policy can support apprenticeships and training.

Written submissions are invited by 30 May.

Repair complaints soaring

Service and repair complaints to the Motor Ombudsman have reached record highs in each of the last two quarters.

It received 1,604 new complaints between January and March, which is 35% higher than the same period last year and also up on the 1,372 complaints received in the final quarter of last year, which was the previous high total.

Motor trades tops vacancy charts

New figures from the Office of National Statistics have revealed that there are around 23,000 vacancies in the UK motor trades industry, which includes the automotive aftermarket.

Together with hospitality, it is the industry with most severe skills gap in the UK.

Mobility challenges revealed in global Forum

The second Freedom of Mobility Forum has highlighted key mobility priorities as the industry evolves to meet future challenges.

Initiated by Stellantis and entitled, “How will our planet accommodate the mobility needs of eight billion people?” the global digital debate urged the sector to prioritise innovations around sustainability, address challenges collaboratively, and focus on the needs of economically diverse populations.

Ford launches EV subscriptions

Ford has introduced a new Ford E-Transit subscription service for business owners.

Available on monthly contracts that can be extended indefinitely, Ford Drive enables businesses to increase their fleets flexibly while also trying electric models without commitment.

Innovation the trump card for ACEMAN

MINI has unveiled the MINI Aceman, a mid-size all-electric crossover with a raft of new innovations.

Four surround view cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors help the model identify and initiate parking manoeuvres into tight spaces, while the Parking Assistant Plus option enables parking via a smartphone.

Hyundai establishes Amazon space

Hyundai Motor Europe has launched its own Brand Space on Amazon where customers can view the range of models, link to local Hyundai dealerships, configure features and schedule test drives.
