Government decision will ‘exacerbate’ skill crisis

New immigration requirements that come into force next month could exacerbate an already extreme skills crisis in the industry, according to the National Body Repair Association (NBRA).

The government has announced that from 4 April it is rising the salary threshold for skilled workers coming to the UK from £26,200 to £38,700.

However, the NBRA has said it is ‘deeply concerned’ that this will exclude a raft of new talent that could otherwise have boosted the UK automotive workforce.

Martyn Rowley, Executive Director, said, “We are deeply concerned about the implications of these new rules on our industry. Our members, who play a vital role in the automotive repair sector, often rely on skilled workers from overseas to fill crucial roles. The automotive repair industry faces a persistent challenge in recruiting and retaining skilled professionals domestically, and the government’s stringent measures exacerbate these difficulties.

“We acknowledge the government’s aim to prioritise investments in the resident workforce. However, it is imperative to recognise the reality of skill shortages and the invaluable contributions of overseas workers to our industry.

“These regulations could disproportionately impact British employees, where due to lack of skilled staff or unstainable wage demands otherwise profitable businesses will be forced to close sites. The NBRA urges the government to reconsider these measures and engage in constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to address concerns effectively.”

Repair volumes tell a complex tale

While there has been a fall in repair volumes during February, the evidence on the ground can be slightly different according where in the UK you are and what sort of work you do.

According to data by Trend Tracker, volumes fell significantly from January to February, but January saw a marked increase on December and, taken together, volumes over the first two months of this year were actually four per cent higher than the same period in 2023.

Trend Tracker’s Paul Sell said, “The bodyshop market is somewhat reactive to the most recent months volumes. And that’s exactly why Trend Tracker exists, why we go to the trouble of publishing monthly snapshot reports, why we track trends for the annual UK Motor Claims and Body Repair Report, both short and long term, collaborating with the leading players in the market to crunch the numbers: to provide a reputable, independent source of data, to show actual trends to make decisions on – rather than how it feels.”

He said that dips towards the end of February are seasonal and might not suggest a general falling off, although he admits it can leave bodyshop managers feeling that business is unnaturally quiet.

However, he warns that the market remains still susceptible to volatile economics and the continued cost-of-living crisis.

Paul said, “The picture could change with insurance premiums and excesses higher in 2024 and the cost-of-living issues not in the past as yet. So from small business owners to large, independent owned or insurer-driven networks and franchise partner operations, there is immense value is having timely access to data, short and long-term trends and insight.”

Automotive skills shortage as severe as ever

The automotive industry skills shortage shows no signs of abating, according to a new report published by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Its UK Automotive Vacancy Overview report has found that there are 4.3 vacancies for every 100 employees in the sector, with 23,000 automotive jobs currently unfilled.

New tech such as electric vehicles and ADAS has contributed to the shortage of key skills, with 52% of job postings in January for vehicle technicians, mechanics, and electricians.

Steve Nash, CEO, said: “The gap between vacancies in automotive and all other UK sectors highlights the multitude of unique and ongoing challenges we face. With our sector currently facing around 23,000 vacancies, it’s critical that everything is done to encourage more job seekers to consider a role in automotive.

“The IMI’s ‘There’s More to Motor’ campaign is already spreading the word about the wide range of opportunities for school leavers, apprentices and career changers. Since launching last summer, we have already reached millions of individuals, many of whom have never held an automotive role. However, the reality is that, even with such a high level of success, it takes time for that to translate into reducing the vacancy rate.”

Fix franchisee to open second site

Fix Auto Tewkesbury owner Kevin Dunlop is on his way to becoming a multi-site operator after receiving the keys to a new 55,000 sqft facility that will operate as Fix Auto Hereford.

A former packaging distribution centre, the site is now being transformed into a fully-equipped 11-bay bodyshop repairing upwards of 40 cars a month.

The new site will be managed by Assistant Manager at Fix Auto Tewkesbury Nathan Cooper, who will lead a team of five operatives.

Kevin said, “When I joined Fix Auto UK in February last year, I stated I was ambitious and wanted to develop a second and possibly third site and here I am with the keys to a second building exactly one year on. To say it’s exciting is an understatement.”

Mark Hutchins, Operations Director for Fix Auto UK, added: “It’s extremely fulfilling to see a new franchise partner flourish. Prior to joining us Kevin had built up an unviable reputation for delivering first class repairs and a first-class service since starting his business in 2015. Just like so many before him, he just needed that crucial business support and guidance we’re able to provide to help him fulfil his ambitions.”
