London traffic the slowest in the world

London traffic is the slowest in the world, according to a new report published by Tom Tom.

It found that a typical 10k drive in London now takes 37 minutes and 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, Dublin is the most congested city at peak times in 2023, with daily commuters having lost 153 hours to traffic.

Globally, the report revealed that average speeds decreased in 228 of the 387 cities it analysed.

Ralf-Peter Schäfer, Vice President of Traffic at TomTom, said, “With more than half of the world’s population living in urban areas, traffic congestion and its economic, ecological and health consequences have become a problem that needs to be urgently addressed”, said. “Planning the future of urban areas is essential to ongoing traffic management. Large urban areas are harnessing Big Data to plan infrastructure and development that will alleviate traffic congestion. Analysis of historical traffic data can help growing cities map more efficient road systems and plan better zoning using location intelligence. Effective implementation of planning measures such as the implementation of LEZs to reduce air pollution will benefit from data from connected cars.”

BASF working towards global sustainability standard

BASF’s Coatings division is discussing the introduction of an independent global certification standard to manage demand for sustainable accident repairs and the creation of a uniform standard based on tested criteria.

The criteria will provide a guideline to bodyshops on how to become more sustainable and help them to prepare for the increasing legal requirements such as CO2 emission reports.

Dr Rahel Reichmann, Head of Sustainability, BASF Global Automotive Refinish Coatings Solutions, said, “We observe that the importance of sustainability is increasingly recognised in our industry, yet the industry is lacking in a set of uniform tools to empower them to do so holistically.”

Dialogue with industry stakeholders began in 2023 and next month the relevant parties will meet in Germany with the intention of agreeing on a joint approach to launch a single standard for the entire collision repair industry.

Dr Markus Piepenbrink, Global Sustainability at BASF Coatings, said: “It is important to us to obtain a meaningful overall picture in the demanding selection of criteria, which is also practicable for the companies. This clear requirement comes from the industry – and we hope for further interested partners who want to help shape this task.”

Vehicle production surges to pre-pandemic levels

UK production topped one million vehicles last year for the first time since before the pandemic.

According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 905,117 cars and 120,357 commercial vehicles were produced in 2023 for a combined total of 1,025,474.

Figures were boosted by a strong performance in December, when car production jumped by 20.7% year on year, and commercial vehicle volumes were up 80.3%.

Taking the year as a whole, car production rose 16.8% for a combined retail value of more than £50bn.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Receding supply chain challenges, new model introductions and a massive £23.7bn of investment put UK vehicle production firmly back on track in 2023. Industry will now focus on the delivery of these commitments, transitioning the sector at pace to electric and scaling up the supply chain. With global competition as fierce as it has ever been and amid escalating geopolitical tensions, both government and industry must remain singularly focused on competitiveness, with all the jobs and growth this will bring. We are in a much better position than a year ago, but the challenges are unrelenting.”

Government shelves plans to extend MOT period

The UK government has announced that plans to extend the MOT testing periods will not be introduced.

It had been considering extending the first test after registration from three years to four years, and extending the gap between MOT tests thereafter from one year to two years.

However, after taking advice from industry it has decided against making any changes.

The news has been welcomed by the industry, which feared any changes would risk driver safety.

Hayley Pells, Policy Lead at the IMI, said, “We welcome the government’s commitment to maintaining the first MOT at three years and annual testing thereafter. This aligns with our findings on the importance of regular checks for road safety and vehicle maintenance.

“The decision to further explore modernising tests for electric and automated vehicles is a positive step towards addressing the unique challenges and advancements in vehicle technology. We also appreciate the focus on diesel emissions, which is crucial for environmental concerns. The conclusion of the consultation also underscores the need for ongoing adaptations in MOT testing to keep pace with rapidly evolving vehicle technologies and environmental considerations.”

Meanwhile, Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), added, “This announcement is extremely positive for our members and consumers. In the consultation, NFDA largely expressed our concerns for motorists’ safety and stressed the importance of vehicle safety and maintaining the UK’s leading safety record in roads.”

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the Independent Garage Association, said: “Public safety is paramount, and the decision aligns with our commitment to protecting motorists by ensuring the continued effectiveness of MOT testing in identifying potential safety issues as early as possible.”

Innovation targets deepening pothole problem

Nearly 630,000 potholes were reported across the UK from January to November last year, costing drivers upwards of £500m in repairs.

This is based on data from 115 out of 208 councils, suggesting the actual number is likely to be almost twice that.

Data was only available from 115 out of 208 councils approached, meaning the total number of reported potholes is likely to be much higher.

However, innovation could soon be available to tackle the issue.

One team of scientists at the University of Cambridge is looking at gathering data from vehicle sensors to produce a digital map of potholes and cracks in roads, while another is working with colleagues at Leeds and Liverpool Universities to research how robots could be used to make repairs.

Other Cambridge researchers are working on materials that can withstand more extreme wear and tear. This includes self-healing concrete and adding properties to roads to help them maintain constant temperatures.
