AkzoNobel has embarked on a multi-million-euro global programme to expand and upgrade its network of Automotive Training Centres (ATCs) to further upskill painters, bodyshop managers and OEM engineers on a new generation of coatings and technologies to support the industry in delivering a more sustainable future.
For the initial phase, the business is investing £2.5m to create new or upgrade existing sites across Europe, and Asia, Australia and Thailand. The programme is underway and will continue to be rolled out throughout 2025.
As well as supporting bodyshops and the wider automotive industry in rethinking their approach to sustainability, AkzoNobel is also addressing a worldwide shortage of future talent. As many as 300 or more trainees will be accommodated at each site in a typical year.
Each of the sites will be equipped with the latest spraybooth technologies and AkzoNobel’s full suite of digital tools created for bodyshops to manage and monitor the high-tech process of vehicle repairs. These could include Carbeat, a production workflow tool, PaintPerformAir (PPA), which helps bring even greater consistency and efficiency in the painting process.
The Automotive Training Centres are being created, upgraded and equipped to accommodate local business, environmental and regulatory needs.
AkzoNobel’s ATC in Belgium is the first to have undergone major upgrade by moving to a new state-of-the-art facility, while its existing training centre in France will be expanded and developed to include a fully electric-powered spraybooth and an upgrade to an existing site in Spain includes two spraybooths which consume significantly less energy in operation compared to current models.
It will also feature a dedicated preparation area as part of AkzoNobel’s new ‘Rapid Repair Station’ concept, accelerating the end-to-end production process.
Further, virtual Reality (VR) technology is to be incorporated to support spray paint training with a simulator that mimics a fully customised paint application environment. Each of the centres will also provide environments for testing and developing new products including waterborne basecoats, topcoats and associated paint systems.

A survey of more than 100 vehicle repairers who attended this year’s Enterprise Rent-A-Car Repair Partner Event has revealed that almost half (47%) think work volumes are the biggest challenge for the repair industry.
This was closely followed by skilled labour shortages, with a third (32%) of respondents saying this is their second biggest concern.
The rising cost of repairs coupled with policyholders choosing higher excesses to keep premium costs down, has led to reduced work volumes as people delay insurance claims and repairs, creating excess capacity in the industry.
While being part of the Enterprise Repair Network helps in terms of guaranteed work volumes (76% of survey respondents said that guaranteed work volumes are the most important part of their partnership with Enterprise), finding and retaining skilled people is a more difficult problem to solve.
Respondents said attracting candidates is by far the biggest employee challenge (58%), followed by training and developing appropriate skills (18%) and retention (13%).
Making the industry more appealing to women could be one way to ease the recruitment crisis. Most respondents (93%) said less than 10% of their current productive workforce are female but 89% would like to employ more women.
Other solutions to the recruitment challenge include looking at how apprenticeships can help fill some of the recruitment gaps and provide the future generation of trained technicians. Less than half of those surveyed (46%) had apprentices, and almost a fifth (19%) currently have no apprentices at all.
Making the industry more appealing to the younger generation (those aged 20-30) is also a priority as this age group currently only makes up 10% of the workforce from those surveyed, suggesting the pipeline of skilled labour is insufficient to sustain current staffing levels and replace those who are ageing out of the profession.

It’s clear from our survey that labour continues to be a key challenge not just for day-to-day operations but also as a barrier to growth.”
Repairers said that labour shortages are preventing some businesses from growing according to plan. Nearly two thirds (60%) said they were planning to expand their business with additional locations, however 67% of those said labour shortages were the main barrier to their expansion plans.
Nick added, “Our industry is exciting, technology-led and continuously innovating and evolving to keep pace with constant change. It’s vital that we highlight the many opportunities available in this sector to show young recruits that they can enjoy a long and varied career that will grow with them.
“We are already working in partnership with our repair network to improve access to training and, as an organisation, we’re looking at ways to encourage more people into a long-term career in this industry.”

Euro NCAP has announced the final set of safety results from the year, with 15 models assessed and 11 achieving a top five-star rating.
It tested the very first electric pick-up on the European market, with the eTERRON 9, produced by Chinese firm Maxus, achieving a highly commendable five stars.
Among the SUVs tested, the Lexus LBX, the Volvo EX30, and the MINI Countryman all achieved five stars, whilst the MG ZS Hybrid scored a lower four-star rating.
Euro NCAP also tested the prestigious new electric Porsche Macan and the Sabaru Forester, as well as two Chinese electric arrivals on the European market, the Deepal S07 and the Leapmotor C10, with all models achieving the top safety rating.
Among larger SUVs, the Hyundai SANTA FE achieved four stars as a standard rating but that rose to five stars if a customer selected its optional safety technologies, while the Mazda CX-80 also got a top rating of five stars.
Meanwhile, the Audi A5 was also awarded a maximum five-star score and the new electric version of the Renault 5 and Alpine A290 got four-star ratings.
Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General Euro NCAP, said, “As we close 2024 with this final set of safety ratings, these results highlight considerable progress across all vehicle classes, even as industry faces significant challenges.
“Despite these pressures, many manufacturers remain steadfast in their commitment to improving road safety, integrating advanced technologies, and prioritising the protection of all road users.”

Solera has announced that Italian pharmaceutical Farvima has deployed its Roadnet Anywhere to drive the efficiency of its logistics operations.
Farvima has opted for a full-suite solution that includes a strategic planner, routing, dispatch, mobile manager for the driver, and analytics. The company will roll out the platform for 700 delivery vehicles across 18 warehouses, covering all of Italy.
Using a smartphone app, users can optimise their last-mile routes based on more factors, from cost to customer service and seasonality, to ensure end customers receive goods on time and with complete traceability.

Auto Trader, ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have joined forces to combat misinformation surrounding electric cars.
The group has created a collection of user-friendly, simplified facts that offers a more balanced and data-backed view of the reality of owning and driving electric cars.
These facts clarify points such as how electric cars are greener, are no more likely to catch fire than an ICE car, and that the electric range and charging point availability is better than some might think.
The information will be regularly reviewed and updated, and endorsed by the Department for Transport.
This comes after the House of Lords’ Environment and Climate Change Committee published a Report – ‘EV strategy: rapid recharge needed’ – highlighting the confusing messages that exist in the media towards EVs and called for “a ‘go-to’ source of comprehensive, clear and balanced information.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said, “Zero emission vehicles will drive our journey to net zero, which is why this government is committed to accelerating the transition. Ensuring consumers have clear, accurate information when deciding what kind of car to buy is essential. This work by industry is absolutely vital to boosting drivers’ confidence in zero emission vehicles, and I’m pleased to back it.”

The Cupra Tavascan and MH HS have both achieved top safety ratings in the latest Euro NCAP tests.
However, the Ford Tourneo Courier only received three stars.
Testing found that the Cupra offers good protection to all vehicle occupants including children, with an active bonnet to protect pedestrians and good reactive response to cyclists and motorcyclists.
The car also has an indirect driver status monitoring system as standard, detecting driver fatigue although not distraction, as well as a lane support system and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.
Meanwhile, the MG backed up its five-star rating in 2019 with another top score. It has good protection for pedestrians and cyclists as well as an effective autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system that responds well to a range of vulnerable road users.
However, Euro NCAP found that the Ford Tourneo Courier fell short of top safety standards. It revealed that in the full-width rigid barrier frontal impact, protection of the head was rated as poor for the small female sitting in the rear seat.Ford has committed to address this before the updated passenger car version will be re-assessed in 2025.

In other results, the Ford Capri, Renault Rafale and Chery Omoda 5 all received five-star ratings and the Mitsubishi ASX received four stars.

The Vella Group has announced that it has set emissions reduction targets that have been approved against the Science Based Targets initiative net zero criteria.
The targets, covering greenhouse gas emissions from business operations, are consistent with the latest climate science advice to prevent the most damaging effects of climate change.
Joining the SBTi net zero criteria reflects The Vella Group’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.
