Aftersales market facing £1.3bn shortfall

A new report has warned that falling car sales could result in a £1.3bn shortfall in aftersales revenues over the next four years.

The study, carried out by REALtime Communications, found that new registrations fells by 1.8 million in the past three years and that will deprive the aftersales sector £1.3bn in service revenues alone between now and 2026.

Insights and Data Director John Law said: “We are now at a crossroads where higher volume service revenue from the scheduled third servicing of new cars sold in 2019 starts to wash through. After that, the traditional scale of activity will be impacted by the significantly reduced scale of new vehicles and the subsequent fall in the first and second servicing of cars sold during 2020 and 2021.

“The numbers evidence very clearly a significant shrinkage in aftersales revenues for the next few years. All the result of 1.8 million vehicles between one and three years old having been lost to the franchise network.”

However, the actual loss could be greater than £1.3bn, as this figure does not include missed upsell opportunities.

Overcoming the sustainability challenge

Sustainability was the topic of ARC360’s first webinar of 2022, when the opening question was – what does sustainability actually mean to businesses today?

Held in association with I Love Claims, the webinar brought together a diverse panel representing different sectors of the automotive incident repair aftermarket, featuring:

  • Charlotte Burnige, company secretary, Coachwork Renovations
  • Joe March, head of commercial & network management, The Green Parts Specialists
  • Chris Payne, head of networks & engineering – home & motor, LV=
  • and Stuart Sandell, assistant vice president – sales, UK & Ireland, Enterprise Holdings

Broad range

While sustainability used to encapsulate a much broader range of business areas – from economic to strategic to human resources – the panel agreed that, increasingly, the word now is used in relation to a company’s environmental policies.

Stuart said, “It can be applied to a lot of different areas, and in some ways economic sustainability has never been more important as we work through the pandemic. But I think sustainability now is heavily linked to the environment and our understanding of our collective impact. The environment has become front and centre now.”

However, while that is certainly true, it is also true that all elements of sustainability impact each other and targets in one area cannot be reached at the expense of others.

Charlotte said, “Every element of sustainability is entwined. We all want to do things that benefit the environment, but we won’t be able to invest in the training, culture and processes if we are not financially sound.”

Commercial

Economic and environmental sustainability are not mutually exclusive though, and the idea that ‘going green’ can actually yield commercial results is gaining momentum.

One area where this is, according to Joe, a ‘no-brainer’, is in the use of green parts. He says that using more green parts in repair is beneficial for bodyshops as they are substantially cheaper than their OEM equivalents and, in many cases, will arrive on site quicker while insurers will benefit from seeing the cost of repairs going down.

However, to make the supply cycle work it needs full market buy-in. In other words, to ensure there are enough recycled parts available at one end insurers need to provide enough vehicles at the other. Joe says that this is not the always the case at present.

He said, “It’s about trust. For us, sustainability is about being commercially astute and working with our partners to help them become commercially astute. We question everything we do and ask if we can do it more efficiently, so often being more sustainable means being more cost-effective.”

Marginal gains

Chris agreed that it is a process of marginal gains. He likened the shift to a sustainable future to turning a tanker around in a canal, but insisted that incremental changes add up.

“Ultimately it’s about achieving net carbon zero. Our global CEO has a very clear vision about that and that gives us a clear idea of what we need to achieve. But there are no easy wins, so we are bringing it down to a granular level. How can we stop driving so much? How can we start using more green parts in repair? How do we achieve a paperless operation?

“There are many marginal gains we can make ourselves, but we’re also working with and investing in our repair network to help them meet our standards.”

The Green Heart Standard – which addresses carbon footprint, electric vehicles, green parts, diversity and equality, mental health, and apprentices – is fundamental to that and LV= can now announce that nearly 50% of its repairers have achieved or are working towards PAS 2060 certification.

“We’re really proud of that,” Chris said.

He added that there is an increasing commercial benefit to this as well, as more and more customers seek businesses that have a proven environmental focus.

Strategy

But while the sustainability challenge may be daunting, it is also an opportunity as there is a chance for gains in almost every area of every business.

For example, on a macro scale, Enterprise has been considering the implications of introducing more electric vehicles into its global mobility solution and what that might mean for emissions and charging infrastructure.

It is also looking at ways of encouraging customers to switch from ICE to EVs when taking its hire cars, which is something that LV= has been trialling at certain sites for the past year.

“Take-up has been low,” Chris said, “but it’s something we’re actively pursuing.”

Meanwhile, on a micro scale, Charlotte spoke about wastage in packaging, revealing that Coachworks Renovations fills up two 1,100-litre containers every single week just with cardboard used in parts delivery.

“That doesn’t even include single-uses plastics,” she said, “so is there a way the industry can reduce packaging without effecting the quality of the part that is delivered?”

People

Ultimately though, strategy only goes so far, and the success or otherwise of sustainable initiatives will be measured by the level of engagement from individuals. No one person can make a telling difference, but the difference of many people working towards the same objective is greater than the sum of its parts.

Stuart said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast. You can have best strategy in the world but you need the people to execute it.”

He explained how regular company-wide ‘townhall’ meetings with the Enterprise leadership keep colleagues informed and engaged, while communication is also paramount for both Christine and Joe.

Christine said, “Our team knows what the vision is. We’ve been working on our greener project for five years so they know what we’re doing and if you sit down and explain why you’re doing something people are happy to embrace the change.”

Joe agreed: “We have more than 300 employees in a number of different roles, but we think that people working in silos and not understanding how their role makes a difference is a wasted opportunity. We take a proactive approach in making sure our wider teams understand what sustainability is about and how they can help.”

The webinar was sponsored by eBay and supported by ARC360 Corporate Partners BASF, BMS, CAPS, Copart, Emacs, Entegral, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Innovation Group, Mirka, Nationwide Vehicle Recovery Assistance, S&G Response, and Sherwin Williams as well as Partners asTech, The Green Parts Specialist, Indasa and Prasco.

Market Intelligence: Wednesday 12 January 2022

ARC360 has published its Market Intelligence Insight for January – in partnership with Trend Tracker – including data from Apple, Google, TomTom, and Department for Transport.

AutoRaise celebrates new talent

AutoRaise has announced it has helped 266 young people enter the automotive incident repair aftermarket in the last six months, despite ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.

AutoRaise was established in 2012 to address the skills shortage by promoting the industry to young people and then working with employers to find placements for new talent. Its ambition is to help secure up to 2,000 new apprentice positions per year by 2025, with a retention rate exceeding 80% by 2027.

CVS makes flying start

Castle Coachworks has introduced a sister company, Castle Vehicle Servicing, to add first-class mechanical repair and vehicle servicing to its existing bodyshop and accident repair business.

Located on the same Northampton site but operating independently, CVS has serviced more than 40 in the two months since launch.

IMI publishes diversity findings

The IMI’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force has released its initial findings. The task force was established to address the skills shortage in the sector by identifying diversity gaps in the workforce and establishing new ways to attract under-represented employees.

The task force was broken down into three main working groups: Race and Ethnicity; Physical and Non-Visible Disabilities; and Gender Identity. Each has now presented interim results, with the final recommendations due before the IMI Dinner on 17 March.

Step forward in spot repair

ARC360 partner Mirka has introduced its Iridium SR abrasive for spot repair. Iridium SR features new three-dimensional technology with triangular silicon carbide grains which form new edges whenever they break down during the sanding process, making the product a long-life solution.

Iridium SR is best paired with Mirka’s ergonomic cordless tools.

Repairify adds diagnostics to product portfolio

Repairify has signed a global supplier contract with LAUNCH, meaning it will now be able to offer automotive diagnostic tools and solutions to its customers. Furthermore, the partnership means Repairify can provide remote OEM and OEM-compatible diagnostic and parts programming across a wider geographical footprint.

ICDP predicts aftermarket changes

International research group ICDP is predicting that vehicles will require few services and repairs in the future due to improved technologies, while the frequency of collisions will also decrease.

As a result it expects to see a significant restructure and downsizing of dealer networks, with many sites entering the independent market and smaller independents seeking the security and virtual scale provided by franchise networks.

Motorists paying the price at the pumps

UK drivers were overcharged by £5m a day in December and petrol retailers failed to pass on wholesale price cuts according to a BBC report.

Prices for unleaded petrol fell 2p a litre, but the RAC believes a 12p decrease would have been a fair reflection of the fall of wholesale prices. It has calculated that, as a result, retailers made 16p a litre instead of the normal 6p.

RAC spokesperson Simon Williams said, “December was a rotten month for drivers as they were taken advantage of by retailers.”

However, Gordon Balmer, executive director of the Petrol Retailers Association, said, “December’s pump price data is less reliable because it is taken from fuel card transactions, and there have been far fewer of these transactions because of the reduction in business activity between Christmas and New Year.

“The costs of running petrol stations rose all year, with electricity up 19%, vastly reduced margins from fuel cards, increased national insurance and wage inflation.”

Enterprise appoints new Senior VP for Europe

Enterprise Holdings has appointed Khaled Shahbo as Senior Vice President for Europe. He takes over from Mike Nigro, who has retired from Enterprise following a distinguished 38-year career.

Khaled has served as Senior Vice President for the UK and Ireland since 2018. Under his stewardship, Enterprise expanded its range of services, technologies and branch network in both countries. This has included the development of the Enterprise Car Club business, along with the integration of SHB Hire into Enterprise’s Flex-E-Rent division to create one of the UK’s largest commercial vehicle rental companies.

Meanwhile, Enterprise Car Club service is now available in Ireland. More than 30 cars and vans have been sited, in eight towns and cities. These include 16 on-street sites in Dublin, from Merrion Square north to the Docklands, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car branches in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Tralee, Drogheda and Naas. The vehicles are available to rent on an hourly basis and so provide a convenient travel option for when a car is the best choice for a journey.

LV= adds to repairer support

LV= has worked with Audatex to fully fund its repairers LV= Audatex costs.

LV= will continue to cover its repairers Assessment, AudaVIN+ and Audainvoice fees, as well as now cover the LV= proportion of the Software and Solutions fees.  This expanded contribution will be effective 1 November and will be applied to repairers invoices 1 December.

Brian Hodge, Director of Customer Claims at LV= General Insurance, said: “Our Network have been incredible over the course of the pandemic and we see them as a critical extension of our customer service proposition. In today’s environment, where so many costs are escalating and repairers are having to find increasingly innovative solutions to stay profitable, we are proud to support them with full funding of their Audatex costs.”

Used values continue to break records

Average monthly used car values at BCA climbed during September to reach £11,817, making it the fourth consecutive month that BCA has reported record used car values.

The substantial rise is the largest monthly increase in average car values ever recorded at BCA and was heavily influenced by the rich mix of stock on offer across BCA’s online sales platforms and the impact of a shortage of new product in the market.

Year-on-year, average monthly values are up by 41.3%, the highest annual increase recorded.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group UK has renewed its long-standing relationship with BCA for outsourced remarketing services. The new three-year contract with the option of a further two-year extension will support Volkswagen Group UK brands; Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Cupra and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.  BCA will handle the sale of over 40,000 vehicles per annum, repatriating the Volkswagen Group’s used vehicles into its franchise network.

SMMT: vehicles top UK’s export values

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called on government to put the automotive sector at the heart of future trade negotiations, after publishing a new report confirming vehicles as the UK’s single most valuable goods trade export.

Vehicle export revenues reached £27bn in 2020, making them more valuable to the UK than power-generating machinery and gold, even during a year when the global pandemic disrupted trade flows and shut down markets around the world.

The UK automotive sector, as a whole, generated a total trade revenue of £74bn, underlying its importance to international trade, with more than 80% of British-built cars and more than 60% of light commercial vehicles destined for export.

The SMMT highlights that the UK’s trade policy must now take advantage of the opportunities from a post-Brexit, post-fossil fuel world to restore growth and jobs with automotive central to this ambition.

Insurance fraudster jailed

A man from Cambridge has been jailed after selling fraudulent car insurance deals to Polish community members living in the UK.

Marek Complak set up false or invalid car insurance policies by posing as a broker for well-known insurers. Complak was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment for money laundering at Cambridge Crown Court following a four-week trial.

The outcome follows an investigation lead by City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED), which was supported by the Insurance Fraud Bureau.

Grove Group appoints new head of sales

Grove Group has appointed Damon Curtis as head of strategic sales – a new role created to forge greater collaboration between vehicle manufacturers, insurers and the wider accident repair sector.

Damon, who has almost 40 years’ experience in the automotive repair market, joins from ACIS Ltd.

Damon said, “The market continues to change and Grove Group understands what is required, not only in the way of day to day product supply and support but by developing and positioning technology.”

Anthony Thorpe, Grove Group’s Business Development Director, said, “Damon joining the business will certainly help us take another progressive step forward.”

Copart supports Ben’s Big Breakfast

Copart team mates proudly put on their pajamas recently to support the Ben Automotive Charity’s ‘Big Breakfast’ fundraising event, as part of our ongoing Copart Cares CSR commitment.

The fundraising event for Ben took place across one week in October, ending on World Mental Health Day – 10 October.

Jane Pocock, Managing Director of Copart UK & Ireland, said, “I’m delighted with the effort our teams across the UK put into the Ben’s Big Breakfast events. Everyone had a lot of fun and together they raised a fantastic amount of money for Ben, which will help them to provide even more support services to the automotive community.”

JLR trials blockchain supply chain

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has trialled the use of secure blockchain technology to ensure full transparency within a sustainable leather supply chain.

In the world-first, JLR partnered with supply chain traceability provider Circulor, leading UK leather manufacturer Bridge of Weir Leather Company and the University of Nottingham to trial the use of traceability technology in the leather supply chain.

As well as tracking compliance, the digital process enabled JLR to assess the carbon footprint of its leather supply network, working with UK-based Bridge of Weir Leather Company to trace its lowest carbon leather from farm to finished article – all part of JLR’s commitment to reducing the environmental and ethical impact of its products across their lifecycle.
