Work volumes and skilled labour are key repairer challenges

A survey of more than 100 vehicle repairers who attended this year’s Enterprise Rent-A-Car Repair Partner Event has revealed that almost half (47%) think work volumes are the biggest challenge for the repair industry.

This was closely followed by skilled labour shortages, with a third (32%) of respondents saying this is their second biggest concern.

The rising cost of repairs coupled with policyholders choosing higher excesses to keep premium costs down, has led to reduced work volumes as people delay insurance claims and repairs, creating excess capacity in the industry.

While being part of the Enterprise Repair Network helps in terms of guaranteed work volumes (76% of survey respondents said that guaranteed work volumes are the most important part of their partnership with Enterprise), finding and retaining skilled people is a more difficult problem to solve.

Respondents said attracting candidates is by far the biggest employee challenge (58%), followed by training and developing appropriate skills (18%) and retention (13%).

Making the industry more appealing to women could be one way to ease the recruitment crisis. Most respondents (93%) said less than 10% of their current productive workforce are female but 89% would like to employ more women.

Other solutions to the recruitment challenge include looking at how apprenticeships can help fill some of the recruitment gaps and provide the future generation of trained technicians. Less than half of those surveyed (46%) had apprentices, and almost a fifth (19%) currently have no apprentices at all.

Making the industry more appealing to the younger generation (those aged 20-30) is also a priority as this age group currently only makes up 10% of the workforce from those surveyed, suggesting the pipeline of skilled labour is insufficient to sustain current staffing levels and replace those who are ageing out of the profession.

Nick Sweetman, AVP Vehicle Repair and Service Operations UK and Ireland for Enterprise Mobility, said, “We want to lead by listening and our Repair Partner event gave us a great opportunity to understand the challenges faced by our repairer network. It’s clear from our survey that labour continues to be a key challenge not just for day-to-day operations but also as a barrier to growth.”

Repairers said that labour shortages are preventing some businesses from growing according to plan.  Nearly two thirds (60%) said they were planning to expand their business with additional locations, however 67% of those said labour shortages were the main barrier to their expansion plans.

Nick added, “Our industry is exciting, technology-led and continuously innovating and evolving to keep pace with constant change.  It’s vital that we highlight the many opportunities available in this sector to show young recruits that they can enjoy a long and varied career that will grow with them.

“We are already working in partnership with our repair network to improve access to training and, as an organisation, we’re looking at ways to encourage more people into a long-term career in this industry.”

£1,000 apprentice cashback for employers

Apprenticeship Central has revealed that employers can claim up to £1,000 tax free when taking on an apprentice under the age of 19.

It has highlighted this after its own research revealed that few bodyshops are aware of this potential benefit.

Director Eleanor Barker-Barnes said, “We are not hugely surprised at the lack of awareness. However, part of our role is to bring benefits like this to the top of the industry’s agenda. Our experienced team understands the landscape and is here to help customers to claim this free cash.”

Recent studies found that nearly half of school leavers now consider an apprenticeship as a viable alternative to university while the number of 16-19 year olds employed as apprentices for the academic year 2023/4 surged by almost a third.

Industry bodies collaborate to tackle EV confusion

Auto Trader, ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have joined forces to combat misinformation surrounding electric cars.

The group has created a collection of user-friendly, simplified facts that offers a more balanced and data-backed view of the reality of owning and driving electric cars.

These facts clarify points such as how electric cars are greener, are no more likely to catch fire than an ICE car, and that the electric range and charging point availability is better than some might think.

The information will be regularly reviewed and updated, and endorsed by the Department for Transport.

This comes after the House of Lords’ Environment and Climate Change Committee published a Report – ‘EV strategy: rapid recharge needed’ – highlighting the confusing messages that exist in the media towards EVs and called for “a ‘go-to’ source of comprehensive, clear and balanced information.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said, “Zero emission vehicles will drive our journey to net zero, which is why this government is committed to accelerating the transition. Ensuring consumers have clear, accurate information when deciding what kind of car to buy is essential. This work by industry is absolutely vital to boosting drivers’ confidence in zero emission vehicles, and I’m pleased to back it.”

Automotive charity Ben brings back Christmas families project

Automotive industry charity Ben is launching its ‘Christmas families project’ for another year, supporting families who might otherwise have to make impossible choices about heating or eating and whether they can afford Christmas gifts.

Now in its fifth year, Ben’s Christmas families project keeps roofs over heads, lights on, food on tables, as well as putting gifts under trees for those feeling cost-of-living pressures.

Last year, it supported 265 automotive families through the project, including 120 children. It’s expected that the charity will help even more people this year.

Rachel Clift, Chief Executive Officer at Ben, said, “We recognise that times are still really tough for many. No one in our automotive family should face homelessness or have to make impossible decisions about whether they can afford to put food on the table or heat their homes. We’re here for those struggling or in crisis. We provide life-changing and, often life-saving, support to many families and individuals who can’t afford the basics and we urge people to contact our helpline. We want everyone in the automotive industry to know that Ben is here for them.”

Charge UP: EV quarter update

Activate Group’s quarterly electric vehicle (EV) report has revealed that EV repair costs have fallen six per cent across the board in the last quarter, with parts costs down eight per cent.

The report draws on Gecko Risk data to provide updates on EV adoption and repair cost trends, exclusively focussing on battery EVs.

It found that as of September, over 280,000 battery EVs have been registered this year, with high-end brands continuing to lead the market. Tesla holds the top position, while BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have gained significant market share. MG remains in the top five, however Volkswagen, has shown strong quarter three growth thanks to the popularity of its ID range.

James Fisher, CEO of Gecko Risk, said, “Prestige makes dominate EV sales this year, perhaps due to purchasing an EV being seen more as luxury than a necessity. At Gecko we are very interested to see how cheaper makes and models coming out of China impact EV take up, with a more environmentally conscious younger generation soon being able to afford to get behind the wheel of an EV. Also, will ongoing cheapening second-hand purchasing opportunities begin to attract a wider audience?”

EV repair cost trends

Year to date, the trend for reduced EV repair costs continues, with average costs down six per cent year-on-year. All of 2024’s highest selling manufacturers have seen a year-on-year reduction in repair costs, with BMW recording the largest drop at 11%.

Adrian Furness, Managing Director, Activate Group Insurance Services, said, “With major manufacturers now offering a strong lineup of electric vehicles to rival their internal combustion engine (ICE) models, competition in the EV market is increasing. This growth is not only driving down costs but also advancing knowledge within the repair industry.

“In recent years, capacity issues meant repair sites had little incentive to invest in the technology and training needed for EV repairs. However, with repair volumes across the market dropping by around 10% over the past year and EV numbers on the rise, repairers are now investing in the skills and equipment necessary to meet this growing demand.”

EV repair cost breakdown

Parts remain the largest component of EV repair costs, though labour is the highest cost for Tesla and MG repairs. Year-on-year, parts costs have fallen by eight per cent, while labour has decreased by four per cent, offset slightly by an eight per cent increase in paint costs.

Adrian added, “Average repair costs are evolving as EVs become more mainstream in the UK. While repair costs in the wider market continue to rise, we see a downward trend for EVs, particularly in parts costs—an indication that EVs are gradually moving towards cost parity with traditional fuel vehicles.”

Conclusion

The EV market continues its rapid evolution, with high-end brands challenging Tesla’s dominance and overall repair costs trending downward as EVs gain traction on UK roads. Increased competition is driving cost efficiency and pushing the repair industry to expand its EV capabilities, addressing both capacity and expertise gaps. As parts and labour costs decrease, EV repairs are becoming more affordable.
