ILC releases 2024 events schedule

ILC has released its 2024 event schedule highlighting the dates of its annual key events set for the coming 12 months which includes 27 June as the date for 2024’s ARC360 technology focussed conference with other activity dates to follow. Further details to follow early in 2024.

Tesla tops list of most expensive EV repairs

New figures have revealed that Teslas are the most expensive EVs to repair. According to data released by Activate Group and Gecko Risk, who have formed a new partnership to deliver deeper insights into EVs, the average repair cost for an EV over the last four years is just under £2,600.

Eco Balance delivered to commercial vehicles

Glasurit has released its Eco Balance product range for commercial vehicles. Eco Balance enables faster processes and less material consumption, cutting CO2 emissions without compromising on quality.

Storms cause £53m of vehicle damage

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) predicts that insurers will pay out about £53m for vehicles damaged by Storms Babet, Ciaran and Debi.

Its data found that 7,210 vehicle damage claims were made following the bad weather in the UK during October and November.

Lexus tops charts of rising vehicle thefts

LV= has revealed that car thefts increased by 59% from 2021 to 2022 and predicts further rises this year.

Its data identified that Lexus thefts rose 513% from 2021-2023, Toyota thefts were up 103% and Hyundai thefts were up 81%, while theft hotspots included Birmingham, London, Sheffield, Manchester, and Liverpool.

Strategy summary

Wayne Mason-Drust, Managing Director at Accident Express Group, has presented his views on the five unique business models for bodyshops at the latest Trend Track meeting.

They included the Network Dominator, which operates a vast network; the Flex Master, which is more adaptable; the Efficiency Expert, which focuses on streamlined operations; the Independent Maverick; and the Mobile Maestro.

Ofgem launches consultation around services and costs

Energy regulator Ofgem has launched a statutory consultation on proposals to ensure businesses get reliable service. It is also seeking more clarity on the costs being paid to third party energy brokers.

LV= Sole Site Repairer forum sets the pace 

LV= General Insurance hosted the latest annual edition of its Sole Site Repairer forum in late November with the key message to attendees: ‘keep doing what you are doing’. 

Held, for the fourth consecutive year, at F1 Williams and courtesy of supporting partner PPG – the invite-only event provided an opportunity for business updates, a focus on future Sole Site strategy and discussions around further opportunities on how the network can continue to optimise its customer-centric experience. 

Chris Payne, Head of Networks and Engineering at LV=, opened proceedings by emphasising how relationships are the key to Sole Site success. On that basis he outlined how during 2023 the business had added 14 Sole Sites to its network which now totals 40, with a further 10 sites scheduled for the coming 12 months. The key, suggested Chris, was to now focus on developing the ‘network of the future’. 

Success 

Chris highlighted that such has been the success of the Sole Site initiative, that it has now been mirrored in home claims with the first site now live and a further six planned for 2024. With obvious ‘differences’ between motor and home solutions, Chris pointed to how LV= would implant staff within its home Sole Suppliers and pondered how the same approach could or should be applied within motor. 

Chris also pointed to the success of the insurer’s dedicated EV brand ElectriX and how, as part of the transition to EV and its associated standard – now standalone from the Green Heart Standard, the insurer had all engineers ATA EV qualified. Nine new Level 1 apprentice engineers – five of which are female – have also started their journey with the insurer during 2023. 

Performance 

LV=’s Network Manager, Michael Golding offered an insight into more of the data and metrics which sit behind the network’s performance – the key theme being ‘keep doing what you are doing’ with positive advances made in parts sourcing and resolution of any ‘problem cases’. He backed this up with research which highlighted LV=’s claims process had been voted as ‘excellent’ 17% higher than the industry average. Michael also highlighted how 44% of LV=’s repair volumes go through its Sole Sites network.  

Outlining the focus for 2024 Michael pointed towards the key areas of: further roll-out of the Green Heart Standard which sees the EV pillar – now a separate standard – replaced by Environmental Repair; a focus on green parts; continuing to explore how efficiencies and, therefore, profits for Sole Sites can be leveraged; trialing of more projects; and furthering recognition of the Sole Site programme within Allianz [Allianz Holdings plc owns LV= General Insurance]. 

“We want everyone to realise the benefits of being a Sole Site repairer,” said Michael, “and with that comes the requirement to be profitable.” 

Insights 

The day was also supported by a number of LV= representatives and partners who provided insights into their specific areas of expertise including: LV=’s Lead Customer Insight Analyst, Mark McFarland provided an in depth customer service and NPS (net promoter score) of LV= motor claims activity; Mike Monaghan, owner of Auto-Motivate, gave an insight into the importance of psychological safety for employees within business; PPG’s National Business Development Manager Gary Langford offered a glimpse of the latest product, digital and added value offerings developed to support cost, energy and emissions reduction; Wes Young, Sales Director at AGM Services, gave insight into oven technology and advice on how to make significant savings from spraybooth operation included real time monitoring options; repair over replace was the theme of Peter McAninch, Managing Director of Plastrepair EU Ltd’s session during which he spoke of the need to see things differently in order to satisfy future business requirements; and finally Steve Silverwood, Managing Director at ECA Business Energy, gave his views on the increasing need to work towards carbon neutral operations and how 2024 could see average energy costs per job settle at a slightly reduced level to 2023.

The Department for Transport has revealed plans to ensure all cars sold in the UK are zero emission by 2035.

The new Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold to be zero emission by 2030, rising to 100% by 2035. Meanwhile, from next year, 22% of all cars sold must be zero emission.

Euro NCAP identifies new weight issues

Euro NCAP’s latest safety release has identified a worrying trend for heavier, more powerful cars that pose a greater risk to other drivers.

It reviewed the Volkswagen ID.7, the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-EQ EQE SUV, BYD TANG, Kia EV9, XPENG G9, VinFast VF8, smart #3, BYD SEAL-U, Honda ZR-V, and the Hyundai KONA, with only three weighing less than two tonnes.

Gecko reveals EV repair times and costs

Gecko, a powerful alternative fuel vehicle data platform, has revealed that there were 940,687BEVs in the UK as of the end of November, with average repair times of 25 days and average costs at £2,591.

ADAS undervalued by more than half of drivers

A new IMI report, Understanding the Knowledge Gap, has revealed that only 47% of motorists see ADAS calibration as a vital job and only one in five can identify ADAS features in their vehicle.

Stellantis and Ample agree EV deal

Stellantis has announced a new deal with Ample that could enable EV drivers with depleted batteries to be back on the road inside five minutes.

As part of the deal, Stellantis will pilot Ample’s modular battery swapping solution, which includes swapping low batteries with a fully charged one.

BMW Group upgrades roadside assistance service

BMW Group UK is working with Allianz Partners to introduce 72 new state-of-the-art service vans as part of a major upgrade to its Roadside Assistance Programme.

National Windscreens announces ADAS exchange

National Windscreens invited 10 technicians from Sweden to its UK centres on a two-week knowledge sharing exchange with Cary Group.

Technicians shared ADAS experience and practices from both countries.

New car sales approach 2019 levels

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has reported that new car sales in November were just 96 units lower than the same month in 2019.

Its figures revealed that sales rose by 9.5% in November to reach 156,525 units, with growth driven by fleets, where registrations rose 25.4% to account for 93,049 units and 59.4% of the market.

Meanwhile, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) grew by 27.8% and 55.8% respectively, while the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market grew by 12.7% in November to 27,433 units.

Audatex responds to NBRA price queries

The NBRA/VBRA has been in close dialogue with Solera/Audatex about its proposed 8.5% price increases.

It said that Chris Wright, the Vice President for North Europe, has provided valuable insights into the decision, explaining that the company is navigating double-digit price rises of its own from industry suppliers.

ACG appoints Budsworth as Managing Director

Accident Credit Group (ACG) has named Ian Budsworth as new Managing Director.

Ian has been with the company for four years as Operations Director, leading the company through a period of significant growth.

Motor insurance payouts spike 21%

The Association of British Insurers has revealed that motor insurance payouts by insurers jumped by 21% in the third quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2022, surpassing £2.5bn for the second consecutive quarter.

Its data found that insurers paid out the equivalent of £4,821 and settled four claims every minute during the quarter.  

Costs were driven by 32% increase in repair costs to £1.6bn, with materials up 16% and labour rising by 15%. Meanwhile, the cost of providing replacement cars surged 47% to £160m.

As a consequence, average motor insurance prices were up to £561, a 29% increase on last year.

Mervyn Skeet Director of General Insurance Policy, said, “Significant and sustained cost pressures faced by insurers, such as a 32% rise in repair costs over the last year, have impacted on the cost of cover. Despite this, insurers continue to do all they can to ensure competitively priced motor insurance.

“As insurers continue to face significant cost pressures, we are working with industry bodies, such as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and Thatcham Research, to understand areas of shared concern between manufacturers and insurers, such as vehicle safety and security.”

Repairify offers free remote services to new customers

Repairify has announced a new initiative that will offer new customers three months of free access to its remote services.

Available from 1 December, the promotion provides new customers or customers who have not used remote services in the last six months full access to Repairify’s remote solutions. This means they will be able to scan, diagnose, calibrate or programme vehicles using Repairify’s IMI-trained technicians and data centre of OE tools.

Solus cuts ribbon on new repair centre

Solus has cut the ribbon to its latest site in Newport, South Wales.

The new 23,000 sqft centre is the first Solus site in Wales and continues the wider strategy of delivering repair solutions to customer where they are, with 22 Solus sites across the UK.

The repair centre will create more than 30 jobs.

Steer Group secures PAS 2060 certification

Steer Automotive Group has achieved PAS 2060 accreditation across all its 98 sites following a combination of operational enhancements and carbon offsetting initiatives.

The group now plans to achieve net zero and carbon neutrality without relying on carbon offsetting by increasing the use of sustainable paint, more green parts in repairs, and using more sustainable energy sources across the business.

Industry accolades for Steer Automotive Group

Steer Automotive Group was named B2B Business of the Year: Large at the Growing Business Awards.

Meanwhile, the group was also for nominated for Large Employer of the Year and Apprenticeship Champion of the Year (Steve Hoe) at the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Fix Auto Devon Finance Director Alena Woolacott has been shortlisted for the 2024 Automotive 30% Club IAW Awards.

Cap hpi predicts continued price deflation

Cap hpi has published its latest car market overview, which revealed that 153,529 cars were registered in October, a 14.3% increase on the same month last year and 7.2% above pre-pandemic October 2019.

Meanwhile, average used car values have dropped by 8.4% or £1,625 in the last two months. It predicts values will continue to drop until the end of the year, with the fall in prices slowing during 2024.

ITAS delivers EV training to Fisker

ITAS has supported Fisker with a range of training sessions to enable colleagues to handle EVs safely.

The course provided an introduction to Fisker’s all-electric Ocean SUV, helping delegates identify high voltage components and then carry out a high voltage disconnect.

BEVS drive production surge

Battery electric vehicles made up 40% of all new cars produced in the UK in October, according to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

BEV production rose 52% in the month, driving up overall car growth of 31.6% to 91,512 units.

Meanwhile, UK commercial vehicle (CV) production returned to growth last month, rising 47.1% year on year with 12,853 vans, buses, trucks, coaches and taxis entering the market.

2023 IMI Skills Competition winners announced

The winners of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) 2023 Skills Competition have been revealed.

Gold went to Ben Turner of Harris DAF High Wycombe (Skillnet) in the Heavy Vehicle category, while Oisin Mckerr of Porters Bodyshop (Southern Regional College) won Refinishing gold, Adrian Matthews of Ultimate Accident Repair Services (S&B Automotive Academy) won gold in the Body Repair category and Oliver Young from J&R Auto Services (Perth UHI) won gold in the Light Vehicle category.

All the finalists can now take part in the World Skills International competition in Lyon in September 2024.

Nissan accelerates EV shift in Sunderland

Nissan has confirmed that all three models manufactured at its Sunderland plant, the Qashqai, Juke and Leaf, will go 100% electric.

Following a £3bn investment, the EV36Zero hub will also include three gigafactories.

High Mobility delivers access to Tesla data

High Mobility has announced that Tesla vehicle data is now available through its developer-focused tools, enabling businesses to track vehicle location, status alerts, usage patterns and maintenance signals.

Meanwhile, the company has entered into a new partnership with IMS, which delivers connected solutions to insurers, mobility operators and governments.

UK Auto manufacturing charges up with £20bn investment boost in 2023

The UK automotive industry has so far attracted approximately £20bn in private investment this year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

NBRA disappointed by Audatex Price Increase

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) and the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA) has criticised Audatex for an 8.5% price increase.

WorldSkills UK winners celebrated

The best apprentices in the UK were celebrated at WorldSkills UK’s glittering ceremony at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

More than 6,000 young people registered to take part in the WorldSkills UK Competitions, with the winners announced following six months of local and regional qualifiers and two days of competition at the National Finals.

Uninsured driver hotspots revealed

New data has revealed that Leeds, Bristol, Salford and Manchester top the UK list of uninsured drivers.

The figures have been released by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau ahead of the launch of Operation Drive Insured, an annual campaign to get uninsured drivers off the road. 

Steer plans to nearly double apprentice numbers

Steer Automotive Group plans to nearly double its apprenticeship numbers by the end of next year.

It already has 159 apprentices employed across 90% of its 98 sites but plans to increase that substantially in the next 12 months so apprentices make up 16% of its technical workforce.

Meanwhile, it has also welcomed apprentices from the Apollo and Balgores regions at 3M’s state-of-the-art training centre.

Fix Auto UK expands service and footprint

Fix Auto Penzance has installed a bank of on-site electric car chargers for customers and colleagues alike. The company has installed two 40 KW fast charge DC units along with a 20 KW AC fast charger, while an app enables drivers to pay for the service ensuring there is no cost to the business.

Meanwhile, the Fix Auto UK network is continuing to grow in Northern Ireland with the appointment of MRB Auto Body, a 10,000 sqft site which will now operate as Fix Auto Ballymoney.

Ben pilots apprenticeships with driving lessons

Automotive charity Ben has joined forces with industry body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to support apprentices progress in the sector through funded driving lessons.

The pilot scheme, Drive to Thrive, will offer apprentices from disadvantaged backgrounds up to 44 hours of funded driving lessons while they are learning their trade.

Fix Auto Leicester, L&I Eaton Sheffield and Elite Carbody in Milton Keynes have all secured a positive recommendation to transition to BS10125:2022.

Meanwhile, Coventry-based C&C Vehicle Services has also passed its BS10125:2022 Stage 2 audit.

SMMT welcomes manufacturing investment

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has welcomed the government’s £4.5bn investment in strategic manufacturing.

Solera data unpicks EV versus ICE repair costs

Solera has announced findings of global research comparing the repair cost trends of electric vehicles and internal combustion engines.

The study examined more than 92,000 repair estimates and found that, overall, EV repair costs are 29% higher while EV parts costs are 48% higher on average.

A lack of skills was cited as the main obstacle to growth by 22% of SME respondents to a survey by the Federation of Small Businesses.

Cybertruck drivers could face Tesla lawsuit

Business Insider has reported that buyers of Tesla’s new Cybertruck could be sued for £40,000 if they sell the vehicle within a year.

Dark days for broken glass claims

Vehicle claims for broken glass has risen this month in line with the darker nights.

According Auto Windscreens, this is a familiar trend when the clocks go back, with most broken glass claims attributed to ‘break ins’.

However, overall, body glass claims have halved since 2011, coming down from 1,171,000 to 729,000.

Shaun Atton, Auto Windscreens’ Business Development Director, said, “Body glass claims are often as a result of theft from a vehicle, and it’s good news that we’ve seen these type of claims reduce year on year, but it suggests when thefts do take place, criminals are finding different ways to break into vehicles, through locks and doors. When we see these type of glass claims, the majority are usually during November.”

“During the next few months, with shorter days and darker nights, we’d remind all drivers, including fleets, to remain vigilant.”

October Market Intelligence report

ARC360 has published its latest market report in partnership with Trend Tracker, which reveals that repair volumes in October were 95% of 2019 levels but 105% compared to the same month last year.

Meanwhile, repair costs are up eight per cent year on year, but this is down from the 16% recorded in June.

JLR apologises for parts delays

Jaguar Land Rover has apologised to customers after a shortage of parts has delayed repairs to nearly 5,000 cars.

The company has downsized its UK parts supply network from 18 UK warehouses to one super centre but has experienced a crisis in parts supply since then.

Gemini celebrates Platinum status of The 5% Club

Gemini Accident Repair Group has secured Platinum Membership status in The 5% Club Employer Audit for 2023-2024.

The 5% Club recognises those employers who have committed to developing new talent through earn and learn skills training plans. Only three per cent of all members achieved Platinum status this year.

LV= unveils new charity initiative

LV= has raised more than £600 for its charity partner Family Action through a new initiative that also tackles the challenges around finding courtesy cars.

The LV= initiative involves its network repairers inviting customers to opt out of taking a courtesy car while their vehicle is being repaired, with the bodyshop donating at least £25 to the charity instead.

SMMT urges government to unlock CAM windfall

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has urged the government to clear the path for the UK to capitalise on a potential £66bn connected and automated mobility windfall by 2040.

In a new report, Connected and automated mobility: The UK economic and market opportunities, the SMMT also says CAM technology has the potential to create an additional 342,000 skilled jobs and prevent upwards of 60,000 serious accidents.

Premium prices spike 29% in third quarter

Motor insurance premiums have risen to £561 in the third quarter of the year, according to data from the Association of British Insurers.

This represents a 29% increase on the same period last year and is nine per cent higher than the second quarter of 2023.

New car sales hit pre-pandemic high

New car sales have hit their highest point since before the pandemic, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

It found that October’s new car market grew by 14.3% in the month to 153,529, which is 7.2% above pre-pandemic levels.

Meanwhile, light commercial vehicle registrations increased by 17.7% in October to 26,342 unites.

IAA company SYNETIQ has been awarded a silver medal by EcoVadis, an internationally-recognised sustainability platform that evaluates companies across a range of criteria, including environment, social and ethical practices.

SYNETIQ earned a silver medal after being ranked in the top 25% of more than 100,000 international businesses assessed.

IMI highlights dangerous ADAS skills gap

The Institute of the Motor Industry believes there is a now a shortfall of 18,000 technicians in the UK qualified to work on ADAS-equipped vehicles.

It warns the gap will increase as at least one in ten cars on UK roads will feature Level 2 autonomy by the end of the year, and this will grow to almost half of the car parc by 2030.

Belron named IMI TechSafe Centre of Excellence

Belron International has become the latest organisation to be named an IMI TechSafe Centre of Excellence, following significant investment in training facilities for its more than 1,100 UK technicians.

The other IMI TechSafe Centres of Excellence are the BMW Group Academy and Lincoln College.

AkzoNobel announces new Sustainability Challenge

AkzoNobel will launch a 24-hour challenge to accelerate carbon reduction in the vehicle repair industry.

Taking place from 21-22 November and involving insurance companies, fleet and lease companies, bodyshops and OEMs, the Vehicle Repair (VR) Sustainability Challenge will spark dialogue around new innovations in energy transition, process efficiency and circular solutions.

A number of bodyshops have achieved BS10125:2022 certification recently. They include Diss-based Bressingham Car Bodyshop, Patersons ARC, Alton Cars Sheffield, and Cosmetic Repair Solutions in Chesterfield.

Thatcham Research has backed the government’s plans to accelerate legislation around autonomous vehicles, as highlighted in His Majesty the King’s Speech.

New research carried out by What Car? has revealed that some aftermarket electric vehicle charging cables could overheat and shock users.

It bought three ‘Mode 2’ chargers, which allow EV owners to charge their vehicle using a three-pin domestic socket, and found that all three failed all or some of its Residual Current Device (RCD) tests.
