Repair or replace? Why technology is driving the future of the automotive industry 

In this exclusive contributed article, Solera Product Manager Victoria Repice explains how technology is changing the debate around repair or replace, and driving a more sustainable sector.

Replacing parts used to be the go-to choice for garages, as it was too expensive and skill-intensive to repair instead. However, technological advances across the automotive industry have made repairing more feasible, and repairs that at one point may not have been deemed possible are becoming the norm.  

On top of this, car prices, even for used cars, are going up, and people are looking for cheaper ways to get their vehicle repaired. In some cases, repairing a part is cheaper than replacing it, so there is also an economic benefit to repairing as well. 

Repairing

Previously, one of the main challenges the industry faced was the cost of repairs. This is especially true for modern vehicles, that are increasingly complex, equipped with advanced electronics, sensors, and software. This means that even seemingly minor repairs could involve costly diagnostics and specialised labour.  

However, this is shifting. New technologies are making repairs more cost-effective and accessible. In the past, assessing damage often required a combination of visual inspection and trial and error. Today, digital diagnostic tools can quickly and accurately identify problems, allowing technicians to make informed decisions about whether a part needs to be repaired or replaced quickly and accurately.  

AI

Determining vehicle repairability following a collision can be a difficult task for car technicians, putting them off repairing vs replacing. However, this is where AI can be the help. 

AI enables more precise assessments of vehicle damage, providing a detailed understanding of whether a part can be repaired or must be replaced. AI also generates more accurate repair cost estimates. By analysing photos of vehicle damage and correlating them with the vehicle identification number (VIN), these tools can determine the exact model, materials, and parts required for the repair. 

With real-time data and advanced sensors, modern diagnostic systems can analyse even the most complex vehicle systems, reducing the guesswork that often led to premature replacement in the past. This means AI can help them quickly assess the damage and provide an immediate estimate of the repair cost and timeline. This level of transparency and speed reassures customers and reduces the anxiety associated with the process. 

From insurer, repairer and customer, this quick process not only speeds up decision-making but also helps lower the costs for everyone involved. Insurers can quickly determine the necessary repairs to be taken, reducing the need for lengthy estimations or manual reviews. By minimising delays and improving accuracy, AI can lead to a more cost-effective and efficient claims process for both insurers and customers. 

Collaboration

The focus on repairs is an opportunity to open up collaboration within the industry. Manufacturers, repair shops, and parts suppliers can join forces to develop strategies that prioritise vehicle longevity. For instance, manufacturers might focus on designing parts that are easier to repair, while suppliers can contribute by offering high-quality materials that improve the durability of these repairs. 

Repairs should no longer be viewed as a last resort but as the first solution for consumers. The future isn’t solely about replacing parts – it’s about reimagining how we can keep vehicles on the road for longer, and in more efficient ways.

Major new crackdown on insurance fraud

Insurance companies have united to step up efforts to crack down on fraudsters seeking to manipulate the UK insurance market with bogus claims and duping innocent people into buying fake insurance policies. 

The new voluntary charter is designed to identify loopholes in the insurance market, enhance collaboration and criminal justice outcomes, better understand the scale of the problem and improve victim support. Full story

Welsh Government hails road safety improvement, pointing to timing of 20mph limit introduction

The Welsh Government has released latest police recorded road collision statistics from April to June this year showing that both collisions (24%) and casualties (24%) on 20mph and 30mph roads (combined) have fallen by almost a quarter compared to the same period of 2023 – the lowest recorded outside of the pandemic. IAM RoadSmart urges the Chancellor to take radical steps to save lives on the roads

The UK’s leading road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, is calling on the Chancellor to take steps to both saves lives and reduce the impact of road traffic collisions in her Autumn Budget. By incentivising the take-up of additional road safety courses through the tax system, it will also help save motorists money as the UK emerges from a cost-of-living crisis. Full story

Half of UK truck drivers switch off safety assistance systems

As part of this year’s 12th Allianz Motor Day, road users across five countries were surveyed regarding the safety of vulnerable road users in urban areas. The key finding of the survey showed that 54% percent of UK heavy vehicle drivers, such as trucks and vans, ‘often’ or ‘sometimes’ switch off the driver assistance systems in their vehicles. ‘Why are headlights allowed to be that bright?’

The AA has warned motorists to drive carefully as the shorter days and worsening weather create more difficult driving conditions. Managing director Tim Rankin said drivers should ensure their headlights were set up appropriately after the company found an 11% rise in crashes after the clocks change, meaning it gets dark an hour earlier. Mixed results in lates Euro NCAP testing

Euro NCAP has assessed the assisted highway driving features of five new models, with one Chinese model receiving a rating of ‘not recommended’.

Ratings are based on two key areas: assistance competence – the balance between automation and ensuring driver engagement; and safety backup – measures taken in an emergency to avoid a collision. 

In the latest testing, the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class were considered ‘Very Good’, while the Volkswagen ID.7 and Volvo EC40 were considered ‘good’.

However, the BYD ATTO 3 was ‘not recommended by Euro NCAP, which found the speed assistance system did not interpret road signs correctly and scored only modestly in assistance competence. 

Meanwhile, its safety backup failed even to reach the minimum standards as no action was taken in the event of an unresponsive driver, leaving them to their fate.

Adriano Palao Bernal, ADAS & AD Technical Manager Euro NCAP, said, “These evaluations provide consumers with critical insights into the Assisted Driving features available in today’s vehicles. 

“First, car buyers interested in this technology must be aware that whilst it enables a comfortable driving experience, it has flaws under certain conditions and may create new risks when misused – hence driver supervision and situational awareness must be ensured at all times while operating these systems. 

“Now in 2024, the assessment has evolved, incorporating two main updates: specific requirements for Driver Monitoring, evaluating the effectiveness of the technology in detecting typical driver states associated with risk, such as system overreliance, prolonged distraction, and sudden onset, eventually leading to a vehicle response that may help prevent a crash. 

“Then, the introduction of Vulnerable Road Users traveling ahead at a small offset in ACC Performance and Safety Backup scenarios ensures that ACC addresses accident types typical in interurban areas.”

Fix Auto Hereford joins the network

Fix Auto Hereford is open for business – completing the ambition of owner Kevin Dunlop who joined the network just 20 months ago with Fix Auto Tewkesbury.

He got the keys to a dilapidated former warehouse six months ago and has now transformed the site into a 5,500 sqft state-of-the-art repair facility with capacity for 50 vehicles a month.

It has already sailed through the pre-audit process for his BS 10125 certification and are now preparing for their final audit scheduled for early next month.

Kevin said, “I am so delighted to be here in Hereford standing in my new repair centre. It has taken me a little longer than expected simply because as we pulled back layers of the old building we uncovered various unforeseen issues that slowed our progress down. That said, I really couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out.”

Ian Pugh, Managing Director for Fix Auto UK, added, “What Kevin and his team have achieved is nothing short of inspirational. He boldly declared when he joined us of his intentions to rapidly expand his business and, 18 months on he’s the proud owner of his second site that he literally has developed with his bare hands. It really is a great addition to the network, geographically it couldn’t be in a better position as we continually strive to provide a comprehensive service for our insurer partners.”

Activate Group opens 11th repair centre in Nottingham

Activate Group has opened a new Activate Accident Repair centre in Nottingham.

The launch comes in response to significant growth in customer demand, particularly from fleet clients, and will help service the increased volume of vehicles requiring repair.

The 25,500 sqft state-of-the-art site began completing repairs on 17 October, further strengthening the company’s capacity to meet demand for high-quality car and commercial vehicle (CV) repairs. 

Equipped with the latest technology, the Nottingham centre is designed to handle ADAS and EV repairs and, purpose-built with specialist equipment, the site is also capable of accommodating CV repairs. 

The facility reflects Activate Group’s strong commitment to sustainability, featuring heat recycling ovens to reduce energy consumption and waste management tools, including a can crusher and bailer, to minimise environmental impact. 

Darren Norman, who joined the business in August, will lead the Nottingham centre as Bodyshop Manager.

Hannah Wilcox, CEO said, “We’re delighted to open this flagship centre in Nottingham, helping us meet the growing demand for high-quality car and commercial vehicle repairs in the area. 

“Expanding our network of owned repair sites is a crucial step in supporting the significant growth we’ve experienced, particularly with new fleet customers. These centres work alongside our trusted partner repair network, which remains a key part of our service offering and future strategy.

Fix Auto UK adds new flagship bodyshop to Northern Ireland portfolio

Less than two weeks after appointing its fourth site in Northern Ireland, Fix Auto has announced that Lennons Accident Repair Specialists has joined the network and will now operate as Fix Auto Cookstown.

Original owners John and Linda Lennon who were later joined by their son, Paul, have recently relocated their entire operation into a prestigious, purpose-built, 10,000 sqft state-of-the-art repair centre complete with new offices. Geographically, the new appointment firmly bridges the void the network had between Belfast in the east and Derry/Londonderry in the north.

Furthermore, the business has also just gained a 100% pass in gaining their BSI 10125 certification.

Designed to ensure a seamless work-throughput guaranteeing efficient repairs, the new site holds three spraybooths, one of which has been ingeniously created within what has been designated as a high-ceiling strip and fit area that also includes a fine filtration system that enables the larger lorries and other commercial vehicles to be repaired.

Paul said, “We have invested heavily in developing this new site and we are exceptionally pleased and proud of what we’ve achieved, but, going forward, we realise we need to be part of a group of ambitious like-minded bodyshops.”

Linda added, “My husband started the business in 1972 and we have an exceptional reputation but we are ambitious. The new building signalled a new era for us, joining Fix Auto UK is a whole new chapter too and will, we are sure, help further elevate us.”

Meanwhile, Fix Auto UK’s Operations Director Mark Hutchins, said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have John, Linda, Paul and the team on board. You really cannot help but to be impressed by the new centre the Lennons have developed, it truly is a prestigious site that elevates our position to yet another level.”

Enterprise Flex-E-Rent welcomes new cohort

Enterprise Flex-E-Rent has recruited a new cohort of 15 apprentices in the UK and Ireland to join its two-year HGV mechanic or panel beater apprentice programme.

The move is part of a long-term strategy to invest in more specialist apprentices and follows Enterprise Flex-E-Rent’s investment earlier this year when more than 100 Commercial Vehicle Technicians joined the last cohort in May and have since qualified.

The new intake of HGV technician apprentices is based at Enterprise Flex-E-Rent depots in the UK and Ireland, including Shrewsbury, Gloucester, Southampton, Exeter, East London, and Limerick.

An existing member of the workshop or bodyshop team is selected to act as a designated ‘buddy’ to each of the apprentices, to support them through their training.

Danny Glynn, Vice President of Enterprise Flex-E-Rent, said, “Finding qualified technicians is a growing challenge across the UK and Ireland. Our apprenticeship programme is vital to building a steady stream of talent as we continue to grow as one of the leading commercial vehicle specialists. By investing in our team, we’re creating long-term career pathways that not only benefit our business but also help address the national skills shortage.”  

This year’s intake includes some candidates who are under 18, which is part of Enterprise Flex-E-Rent’s efforts to reach a broader range of applicants and help more young people become part of a skilled workforce early in their careers.  

They now begin a two-year journey, which is part of a structured career roadmap with all the training and development required to reach Master Technician level and management roles in the business.

Glynn concluded, “Our continuing focus on career development and promote-from-within culture has led to retention levels for apprentices doubling over the past year, as joiners see just how far they can go with Enterprise Flex-E-Rent.”

Solera extends partnership with F&P

Solera has extended its strategic partnership with F&P, the Danish trade association for insurance companies and pension funds, by integrating its Sustainable Estimatics tool into the Autotaks platform.

With over 700,000 insurance claims every year in Denmark running through F&Ps proprietary claims management platform, the integration of Solera’s Sustainable Estimatics API will allow every insurer in the country to track and offset the carbon emissions created through different processes in a vehicle’s life span – including Scope 3.

This move sets a new standard, covering 100% of auto claims and aligning with Denmark’s leading commitment to sustainability goals to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Peder Herbo, director of Autotaks at F&P, said, “We are pleased to extend our partnership with Solera, integrating its industry-first solution into our Autotaks platform. Solera’s solution is ISO-14064-01 accredited, so not only does it provide the wealth of data offered by Solera, but we know its data has been verified as trusted to provide the accuracy we need. It will enable us to set a new standard for measuring the CO2 emissions of auto insurance claims across the entire country, supporting the industry in reducing its carbon footprint and improving efficiency.”

Repairify celebrates European Patent

The European Patent Office has granted Repairify a patent relating to a Remote Vehicle Programming System and Method.

This latest award aligns with Repairify’s global patents which it holds in the US and Australia as well as other markets, strengthening its position in Europe.

Phil Peace, Managing Director of Repairify International, said: “Following extensive work, we are delighted that the European Patent Office has recognised our innovative technology and awarded Repairify with a patent for our Remote Services solution.”
