EV supply could outstrip demand

Sales of EVs could slow following the government’s decision to delay the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035, according to David Borland, EY UK & Ireland Automotive Lead.

Commenting after the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported a 21% year-on-year increase in registrations during September, he said the outlook for the automotive industry in the UK was positive.

The country overtook France to become the world’s eighth largest vehicle manufacturer, and signs are encouraging that this will continue with investments in plants in Somerset, Oxford, Swindon and Ellesmere Port.

However, David said: “The UK government’s decision to move the ICE sales ban from 2030 to 2035 was a significant and unexpected move. The shift in policy may have a negative impact on consumer demand for EVs in the short term, as well as potentially affecting demand from fleet operators as both groups work out what the changes mean for them.

“There is a risk that with OEMs, retailers and charge point operators all having invested significant capital in anticipation of a 2030 ICE sales ban, the policy shift could see supply outstripping demand.”

New car sales surge 21%

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that UK new car market grew for the 14th month in a row in September, up 21% to 272,610 registrations.

Sales to large fleets rose 40.8% to 143,256 units while private consumer demand grew 5.8% to 122,944 units.

Meanwhile, sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were up 50.9%, hybrid electric vehicles were up 30.7% and battery electric vehicles recorded their 41st consecutive month of growth, rising 18.9% to 45,323 units.

Elsewhere, the new light commercial vehicle market grew for the ninth month in a row, up 28.1% with 44,760 vans, pickups and 4x4s joining UK roads.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “A bumper September means the new car market remains strong despite economic challenges. However, with tougher EV targets for manufacturers coming into force next year, we need to accelerate the transition, encouraging all motorists to make the switch.

“This means adding carrots to the stick – creating private purchase incentives aligned with business benefits, equalising on-street charging VAT with off-street domestic rates and mandating chargepoint rollout in line with how electric vehicle sales are now to be dictated. The forthcoming Autumn Statement is the perfect opportunity to create the conditions that will deliver the zero emission mobility essential to our shared net zero ambition.”

Fix Auto Chelmsford unveils new site

Fix Auto Chelmsford has relocated to a new 8,000 sqft state-of-the-art new repair centre a month ahead of schedule.

The new site is expected to increase repair capacity by 25% to about 150 jobs per month.

The move was accelerated when the spraybooth at the previous site went down.

Owner Danny Ashwell said, “With all the major amenities and facilities installed, all was going to plan and we’d set a moving in date for the end of October. But when our existing spraybooth went down, pushing the move through seemed the obvious solution to maintain our level of workload even though I knew we had a mountain to climb to get it all done.

“Fortunately, the team got right behind it and worked tirelessly to make it happen. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Ian Pugh, Managing Director for Fix Auto UK, said, “What Danny and his team are achieving is totally inspiring. He laid out some bold plans 18 months ago and you must applaud his determination to keep to his script. When faced with a daunting challenge to complete the work needed on his new site and then relocate the business within days rather than weeks is a mighty achievement and is a credit to all involved.”

CHO partners with Percayso in anti-fraud measures

Percayso Inform is developing a new anti-fraud platform for members of the Credit Hire Organisation (CHO).

The platform, which will be officially launched at the CHO’s annual conference on 12 October, will enable subscribers to screen claims in order to manage and identify fraudulent activity.

Anthony Hughes, Chairman and CEO of CHO, said, “Our members tell me that fraud is one of their biggest headaches. There is a lot of voluntary, informal information sharing across the sector, but we do need a fully-functioning intelligence and data platform, and Percayso came up with a great option. The new platform will fill a gap in the industry’s anti-fraud arsenal and underscores our strong commitment to countering fraud.”

Ian Lilley, head of partnerships at Percayso, said, “This is a great opportunity to work with the CHO and deliver a bespoke counter-fraud platform for the credit hire sector. This project is an evolving platform that will grow with and respond to the collective needs of CHO subscribers, with potential for additional data sources and anti-fraud measures to be introduced from elsewhere in the motor insurance industry.”

Used car prices soften slightly

Data from cap hpi has revealed that used car values fell by their largest amount since 2008 in September.

It found that values fell by 1.9%, an average of £420, at the three-year, 60,000-mile point. Meanwhile, values at the one-year age point dropped by 1.6%, or £575.

Values of older cars also fell during the month, with five-year-old car prices down 1.8% and 10-year-old car values decreasing by 2.1%.

However, used car prices remain at an unprecedented level despite these modest falls, tracking at some 25-30% more than in 2021.

Derren Martin, Director of Valuations at cap hpi, said, “It is important to put this month’s data into context. Used car values currently remain some 25-30% above where they were before those extraordinary increases in 2021. The downward movements now being experienced are a relatively gentle realignment, not a crash, and they are no longer increasing in severity – value drops have been consistent for the last three months now.”

A continued softening of prices is expected to continue for the rest of the year.

Martin concluded, “An average reduction similar to that of the last three months is widely expected.”

Government announces ZEV mandate revisions

The UK government has revised targets of its Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which requires manufacturers to sell an increasing number of zero-emission vehicles each year.

Revised targets stipulate that 22% of new cars sold in 2024 must be zero emission, as was previously the case. This will increase each year and by 2030 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans must be zero emission. This will rise to 100% by 2035.

Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA), said, “These ambitious registration targets will create a difficult trading environment in conjunction with the recent decision to push back the ban of petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 to 2035.

“Franchised dealers will have to continue to push for electric vehicles to meet these targets whilst the recent five-year delay will likely damage consumers demand for electric vehicles. To adopt a pragmatic approach to net-zero targets, NFDA strongly urges the government to introduce attractive incentives to make electric vehicles more accessible for less-affluent motorists.”

She continued, “For vans, NFDA embraces the revised trajectories. This adjustment better aligns with market demand and establishes more attainable objectives within the sector.”
