The future in Focus: Managing ADAS

The rise and rise of ADAS has placed a huge strain on skills in vehicle repair. With demand only growing, correct diagnostics and calibration is becoming absolutely critical to the sector.

Here, as part of ARC360’s Future in Focus editorial theme, Phil Peace, Managing Director (SVP) International, Repairify, considers the implications of widespread adoption of ADAS and how Repairify is helping to future-proof the industry.

Over the last few years, the number of ADAS systems within vehicles has dramatically increased as this technology now comes as standard on most vehicles that come off the production line. This means that the number of vehicles that will require calibration will continue to increase.

But will the industry be able to handle all this work? At this moment in time, according to the latest data from the IMI’s ADAS TechSafe Technician Forecasts, the industry would require 18,000 technicians to meet current ADAS requirements. However, if we look at the actual number of qualified technicians there are currently only around 3,500.

We know this is a huge challenge to overcome but it is where companies such as Repairify are important. Our proprietary technology provides services to diagnose, calibrate and programme systems remotely supported by our IMI-trained technicians, who will assist where organisations don’t have such resources locally to do the work.

In addition, our growing global solutions include access to the development of AI and machine learning to enhance our data enabling us to ensure information and solutions are available at the right time in the workflow or shop processes, providing customers with the ability to access critical repair information at their fingertips.

Alongside using third parties to do the work, there are ways in which businesses can help bridge the gap. This is done through apprenticeships and training programmes that are supported by the Apprenticeship Levy and various support schemes that are available. We are also seeing businesses investing in their apprenticeship and training programmes.

This is a positive step because they understand the benefits it will enable them to reap in the short, medium and long term.  As a business, we are also committed to investing in training programmes both internally for our team and externally for our customers.

This is because we understand in no uncertain terms that it will assist in providing our team and the industry with the skills that are needed to keep pace with the work hitting the workshop floor and the knowledge to understand the technology within the vehicles that are coming off the production line. 

Overall, we know the ADAS skills gap is real and with the right investment in tools, training and apprenticeships the sector can slowly start to fill the gap, but based on current statistics it will help, but not be enough, to meet the amount of technicians required to handle the amount of work relating to ADAS that is hitting workshop floors in the future.

Certification adds to a prestigious list of vehicle manufacturer approvals for the Birmingham-based site that includes the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Rolls Royce, and Tesla.

Repairify offers free remote services to new customers

Repairify has announced a new initiative that will offer new customers three months of free access to its remote services.

Available from 1 December, the promotion provides new customers or customers who have not used remote services in the last six months full access to Repairify’s remote solutions. This means they will be able to scan, diagnose, calibrate or programme vehicles using Repairify’s IMI-trained technicians and data centre of OE tools.

Solus cuts ribbon on new repair centre

Solus has cut the ribbon to its latest site in Newport, South Wales.

The new 23,000 sqft centre is the first Solus site in Wales and continues the wider strategy of delivering repair solutions to customer where they are, with 22 Solus sites across the UK.

The repair centre will create more than 30 jobs.

Steer Group secures PAS 2060 certification

Steer Automotive Group has achieved PAS 2060 accreditation across all its 98 sites following a combination of operational enhancements and carbon offsetting initiatives.

The group now plans to achieve net zero and carbon neutrality without relying on carbon offsetting by increasing the use of sustainable paint, more green parts in repairs, and using more sustainable energy sources across the business.

Steer Automotive Group was named B2B Business of the Year: Large at the Growing Business Awards.

Meanwhile, the group was also for nominated for Large Employer of the Year and Apprenticeship Champion of the Year (Steve Hoe) at the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Cap hpi predicts continued price deflation

Cap hpi has published its latest car market overview, which revealed that 153,529 cars were registered in October, a 14.3% increase on the same month last year and 7.2% above pre-pandemic October 2019.

Meanwhile, average used car values have dropped by 8.4% or £1,625 in the last two months. It predicts values will continue to drop until the end of the year, with the fall in prices slowing during 2024.

ITAS delivers EV training to Fisker

ITAS has supported Fisker with a range of training sessions to enable colleagues to handle EVs safely.

The course provided an introduction to Fisker’s all-electric Ocean SUV, helping delegates identify high voltage components and then carry out a high voltage disconnect.

BEVS drive production surge

Battery electric vehicles made up 40% of all new cars produced in the UK in October, according to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

BEV production rose 52% in the month, driving up overall car growth of 31.6% to 91,512 units.

Meanwhile, UK commercial vehicle (CV) production returned to growth last month, rising 47.1% year on year with 12,853 vans, buses, trucks, coaches and taxis entering the market.

2023 IMI Skills Competition winners announced

The winners of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) 2023 Skills Competition have been revealed.

Gold went to Ben Turner of Harris DAF High Wycombe (Skillnet) in the Heavy Vehicle category, while Oisin Mckerr of Porters Bodyshop (Southern Regional College) won Refinishing gold, Adrian Matthews of Ultimate Accident Repair Services (S&B Automotive Academy) won gold in the Body Repair category and Oliver Young from J&R Auto Services (Perth UHI) won gold in the Light Vehicle category.

All the finalists can now take part in the World Skills International competition in Lyon in September 2024.

Nissan accelerates EV shift in Sunderland

Nissan has confirmed that all three models manufactured at its Sunderland plant, the Qashqai, Juke and Leaf, will go 100% electric.

Following a £3bn investment, the EV36Zero hub will also include three gigafactories.

High Mobility delivers access to Tesla data

High Mobility has announced that Tesla vehicle data is now available through its developer-focused tools, enabling businesses to track vehicle location, status alerts, usage patterns and maintenance signals.

Meanwhile, the company has entered into a new partnership with IMS, which delivers connected solutions to insurers, mobility operators and governments.

UK Auto manufacturing charges up with £20bn investment boost in 2023

The UK automotive industry has so far attracted approximately £20bn in private investment this year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

On top of industry’s backing for new and upgraded R&D and manufacturing facilities, the government committed a further £2bn for the sector, backed by an Advanced Manufacturing Plan and battery strategy that will drive green economic growth and create jobs across every part of the country.

NBRA disappointed by Audatex Price Increase

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) and the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA) has criticised Audatex for an 8.5% price increase.

It says that the 8.5% hike is not justifiable in comparison to the 6.1% Retail Price Index (RPI).

AkzoNobel celebrates carbon reduction initiative

AkzoNobel has celebrated a global initiative with partners and industry stakeholders to collaborate on more sustainable solutions in vehicle repair.

Focusing on three key areas -energy transition, process efficiency and circular solutions – solutions include adapting repair manuals to improve repairability and the creation of an academy to train more sustainable practices.

CEO of LKQ Euro Car Parts Andy Hamilton has assessed the challenges facing repairers in 2024.

The partnership will help fund Brake’s work supporting road crash victims and campaigning for safe and healthy mobility.

WorldSkills UK winners celebrated

The best apprentices in the UK were celebrated at WorldSkills UK’s glittering ceremony at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

More than 6,000 young people registered to take part in the WorldSkills UK Competitions, with the winners announced following six months of local and regional qualifiers and two days of competition at the National Finals.

Uninsured driver hotspots revealed

New data has revealed that Leeds, Bristol, Salford and Manchester top the UK list of uninsured drivers.

The figures have been released by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau ahead of the launch of Operation Drive Insured, an annual campaign to get uninsured drivers off the road. 

Steer plans to nearly double apprentice numbers

Steer Automotive Group plans to nearly double its apprenticeship numbers by the end of next year.

It already has 159 apprentices employed across 90% of its 98 sites but plans to increase that substantially in the next 12 months so apprentices make up 16% of its technical workforce.

Meanwhile, it has also welcomed apprentices from the Apollo and Balgores regions at 3M’s state-of-the-art training centre.

Fix Auto UK expands service and footprint

Fix Auto Penzance has installed a bank of on-site electric car chargers for customers and colleagues alike. The company has installed two 40 KW fast charge DC units along with a 20 KW AC fast charger, while an app enables drivers to pay for the service ensuring there is no cost to the business.

Meanwhile, the Fix Auto UK network is continuing to grow in Northern Ireland with the appointment of MRB Auto Body, a 10,000 sqft site which will now operate as Fix Auto Ballymoney.

Ben pilots apprenticeships with driving lessons

Automotive charity Ben has joined forces with industry body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to support apprentices progress in the sector through funded driving lessons.

The pilot scheme, Drive to Thrive, will offer apprentices from disadvantaged backgrounds up to 44 hours of funded driving lessons while they are learning their trade.

Fix Auto Leicester, L&I Eaton Sheffield and Elite Carbody in Milton Keynes have all secured a positive recommendation to transition to BS10125:2022.

Meanwhile, Coventry-based C&C Vehicle Services has also passed its BS10125:2022 Stage 2 audit.

SMMT welcomes manufacturing investment

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has welcomed the government’s £4.5bn investment in strategic manufacturing.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “This government investment reflects the fact the UK automotive sector has the talent, the innovation and the determination necessary to thrive in the face of fierce global competition. It will deliver benefits not just for the automotive sector but for the whole country in terms of growth, high value jobs and productivity. It also sends a powerful signal that the UK is open for business.”

Stellantis cuts ribbon on sustainability hub

Stellantis has unveiled its SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub in Turin, Italy.

The Hub has been created to extend the life of parts and vehicles where possible, and recycle the materials of parts that can’t be reused.

Stellantis supports AutoRaise at recruitment festival

Stellantis supported AutoRaise at the recent National School and College Leavers Festival in Birmingham, donating vehicle parts and panels to enable the charity to better showcase the skills and opportunities within the sector.

ITAS introduces spot repair courses

ITAS has introduced a range of new courses focused on spot repairs. It recognises that new technology is making smaller repairs more commonplace and is committed to ensuring the industry has the skills to carry them out safely.

ThingCo cuts speeding events by a quarter

Telematics solutions provider ThingCo has revealed that its wireless telematics device Theo has helped cut speeding events by 25% and reduce speed on 60mph roads by six per cent.

JLR fights back against thefts

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) UK has reported that models built on its most advanced electrical architecture, which feature the latest security features, are proving nearly theft-proof.

Since 2020 just 0.07% of new Range Rover and new Range Rover Sports have been stolen and only 0.3% of new Defenders.

Eco Repair Systems and FMG agree training deal

Eco Repair Systems has announced a new training partnership with FMG Repair Services, which operates 65 repair sites nationwide.

As part of the deal, Eco Repair Systems will supply plastic repair equipment to FMG for use in its IMI-approved technical training centre.

VW unveils EV transition tools

Volkswagen has unveiled new digital resources to support customers transition to EVs. The three e-mobility tools provide instant data on range, charging times and running costs for each VW model.

Euro NCAP and ANCAP sign MOU

Euro NCAP and its Australian equivalent ANCAP have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cement their existing relationship and pave the way for closer collaboration in the future.

Happy first birthday

PartsXChange is celebrating its first birthday. It now has more than 400 users buying and selling new and used parts on its platform and has been nominated for three different industry awards in three different sectors.

Dean Shines in charity challenge

Dean Meadows of Shine! has so far raised more than £260 as part of the Movember challenge. He is cycling and walking 190 miles to support men’s mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Porsche goes live with First Contact

Porsche has unveiled its new First Contact customer services solution ahead of schedule.

The objective of First Contact is for Porsche to support every customer contact in Europe itself. This required designing new processes, implementing new IT, and hiring 140 experts for its new Porsche Customer Relations Hubs.

Nissan confirms £1.2bn Sunderland investment

Nissan has confirmed it will invest about £1.2bn in its Sunderland plant to manufacture the electric Qashqai and Juke models, protecting about 6,000 jobs.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “This new announcement underlines Britain’s position as an increasingly competitive location for electric vehicle production.”

Mixed reviews for Autumn Statement

The NBRA has given mixed reviews to the government’s Autumn Statement, welcoming general measures to boost industry but highlighting a lack of support directly targeting the automotive repair sector.

Executive director Martin Rowley said, “In the aftermath of the Autumn Statement, NBRA acknowledges certain government initiatives supporting our members. However, we underscore the ongoing need for precise support measures aimed at sustaining the automotive repair sector amidst economic uncertainties.”

In the Statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt confirmed that Corporation Tax rate will remain at 25% while the small profits rate remains at 19%. Further, a business rates support package has been introduced worth £4.3bn over the next five years.

Martin said, “NBRA welcomes this announcement as small businesses which are at the heart of the UKs economy, need access to capital to grow and invest. This move will significantly assist our members who have already been burdened by financial crises in the past years.” 

However, while a further £50m will fund a new two-year apprenticeship pilot, there was no mention of reform to the failing Apprenticeship Levy.

Martin said, “We highlight the urgent need for comprehensive action in response to the industry’s unanimous plea for the reform or elimination of the Apprenticeship Levy. The absence of a direct response in the Autumn Statement is a missed opportunity, jeopardising the development of a skilled workforce crucial to the repair sector. Currently, the industry faces a significant skills gap, creating a demand for fresh talent and new expertise.” 

He also called for tailored measures to address the skills gap in the automotive sector as part of the government’s Back to Work plan, and suggested that rising the National Living Wage could put further pressure on businesses within automotive repair.

He concluded, “As the Autumn Statement unfolds, we extend a call for collaborative efforts between the government and the automotive repair sector. We urgently appeal for the government’s support, providing essential relief for body shop employees navigating the escalating financial pressures during this challenging era of the cost-of-living crisis. Immediate action on apprenticeship reform, strategic support for workforce development, and targeted measures to enhance industry competitiveness are not mere suggestions but indispensable steps for securing the future of vehicle repairers. The NBRA remains committed in our engagement with the government to ensure sustained support for body shops and vehicle repairers.”

Making the most of the autonomous revolution

The road ahead has been cleared for autonomous driving in the UK, with the government committed to a ‘transport revolution’ in the coming years.

In this contributed feature, ARC360 partner Repairify considers the implications for automotive repair sector, and what opportunities self-driving may present.

“The automated vehicles bill announced in the King’s Speech purports to deliver a ‘transport revolution’ by enabling the safe implementation of self-driving vehicles and by securing the UK’s position as a ‘global leader’ in this high-tech arena, creating one of the world’s ‘most comprehensive legal frameworks’ for self-driving vehicles, underpinned by safety.

As the growth of self-driving cars gathers pace, so too will the importance of calibration, presenting a significant business opportunity for workshops to generate a new revenue stream by working on vehicles equipped with ADAS features which require calibrating and or programming to the vehicle.

However, repairers need to be fully informed and fully prepared. ADAS repairs can be complex, and no repairer sets out to complete a bad repair. Yet, sometimes, due to the intricacies of vehicle technology, an ADAS repair can prove challenging, and mistakes can be made, risking the safety of the driver and other motorists on the road.

Usually, a workshop’s public liability insurance will cover the business in this situation. However, having the reassurance of a global insurance policy on the basis that OEM methods have been followed during the repair, provides complete protection and peace of mind for a repairer.

Repairify does just that. Critically, our remote services are fully underwritten by worldwide insurance and our IMI-trained technicians employ OEM tools and methods to guide repairers through ADAS repairs. Using the chat function on the Repairify app, which is fully translatable to cope with our global footprint, the whole process is recorded via a written transcript which would fully support any claim that is made. The online application is accessed by the technician on his/her tablet whilst at the vehicle, is wholly interactive and is assisted by our IMI-trained technicians through the end-to-end process.

Manufacturers are constantly introducing new vehicle technologies that repairers need to be confident about tackling. Using the correct tools is one important aspect but competency training will also ensure technicians know how to approach any situation put in front of them when it comes to electronic-related jobs on the vehicle. ADAS repairs can be tackled with ease and identified from the point of FNOL to ensure all sectors within the business understand what is required from the repair process and how the technology operates to be repaired safely.”

Solera data unpicks EV versus ICE repair costs

Solera has announced findings of global research comparing the repair cost trends of electric vehicles and internal combustion engines.

The study examined more than 92,000 repair estimates and found that, overall, EV repair costs are 29% higher while EV parts costs are 48% higher on average.

WorldSkills winners to be revealed

The National WorldSkills finals have been taking place at a number of training and education providers throughout the UK this week, with the winners set to be announced at a glittering ceremony at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester this evening.

Polestar has begun production of its new SUV Coupe, Polestar4, at the Geely-operated facility in Hangzhou Bay.

Dark days for broken glass claims

Vehicle claims for broken glass has risen this month in line with the darker nights. According to Auto Windscreens, this is a familiar trend when the clocks go back, with most broken glass claims attributed to ‘break ins’.

However, overall, body glass claims have halved since 2011, coming down from 1,171,000 to 729,000.

Team UK honoured at Houses of Parliament

Team UK’s success at EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023 was celebrated at a special event at the Houses of Parliament, London. The team collected nine medals, including one gold, and two bronze medals, plus six Medallions for Excellence.

IMI announces Budget wishlist

The IMI has announced its automotive industry ‘wishlist’ ahead of next week’s Autumn Budget.

It is calling for increased funding for apprenticeships, greater support for SMEs to offer apprenticeships, further education around ADAS, and more incentives for drivers switching to alternative fuelled vehicles.

SMMT produces manufacturing manifesto

The SMMT has joined industry bodies from the four other main manufacturing sectors in the UK to produce a manifesto to secure continued growth.

Alongside the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Group, the Chemical Industries Association, and the Food and Drink Federation, the SMMT has called for a fresh focus on skills, policies to promote innovation, and further collaboration with business to support sustainability.

Mercedes-Benz expand valet parking solution

Mercedes-Benz has announced its automated valet parking solution, Intelligent Park Pilot, is now available in its E-Class Saloon and Estate, the EQE SUV and the EQS SUV.

The solution allows drivers to exit the vehicle in the carpark and let the car drive itself to a pre-booked space.

Skills gap stifling growth

A lack of skills was cited as the main obstacle to growth by 22% of SME respondents to a survey by the Federation of Small Businesses.

That figure was at 28% for manufacturing businesses and 23% for those in technical sectors.

LKQ Euro Car Parts launches graduate programme

LKQ Euro Car Parts has launched its first Graduate Scheme. The new three-year programme will help graduates progress into the financial sector through continued learning and dedicated mentors.

Seal slides into UK market

The fully-electric BYD Seal has launched in the UK this week. Featuring a 15.6-inch centre console and the latest innovations in front and rear lights, the model can accelerate from 0-100km in 3.8 seconds and is fully rechargeable in just 26 minutes.

Car of the Future revealed

Nine-year-old Oliver Gorrod has created the ‘Car of the Future’ after entering the nationwide MINI Minds competition, which challenged children aged 4-10 to imagine their perfect car.

Oliver’s winning solution is fully electric, with a camouflaged design to blend into the natural environment.

Politics and football colour buying habits

A study by Cazoo has revealed the 23% of drivers would rule out buying a car if its colour represented a political party or football team they don’t like, with 47% of under 30s saying they’d refuse to buy a car in the colour of a political party they don’t support.

Cybertruck drivers could face Tesla lawsuit

Business Insider has reported that buyers of Tesla’s new Cybertruck could be sued for £40,000 if they sell the vehicle within a year.

The Cybertruck will be released on 30 November, with a quarter of a million set to be produced by 2025.

Ben announces strategic vision

To meet rising demand for its services, automotive charity Ben has announced a new five-year strategic plan that will see its care and village services transferred ‘to the stewardship of new operators.’

Since 2018, Ben has managed a 300% increase in enquiries through its confidential helpline and supported over 200% more individuals through its support and specialist services.

With the cost-of-living continuing to put pressure on families, Ben’s Board of Trustees and Executive team have spent the past 12 months completing a strategic review of every aspect its support and services and has made some key decisions about the future strategic direction of the charity.

Zara Ross, Ben’s CEO, said, “The announcement being made today marks a significant period of change for our charity, but we believe now is the right time for us to make this commitment. This will enable us to grow and accelerate support and services for our automotive family.

In a statement, the charity said, “Through a recent strategic review process, Ben’s Board of trustees reflected on the changing context for people working in the automotive industry and the impact that it is having, and will have, on their health and wellbeing. In light of the growing demand for Ben’s health and wellbeing services, the Board concluded that over the next 5–10-year period, the priority of the charity will be to significantly increase these services for industry people and their family dependents. This will entail enhancing and accelerating both our reactive and preventative health and wellbeing support services and driving increased impact and engagement across the automotive industry. We will be in a position to share our plans for these developments over the future months. 

“Establishing Ben’s future focus has required a fundamental review of all Ben’s current services. Our care, and latterly village, services have been an integral and valued part of the charity for over 70 years. Both the Board and Executive team are extremely proud of these services and the excellent reputation they have achieved over the years. After very careful consideration, the Board, supported by Ben’s Executive team, has unanimously concluded that now is the right time to recommend the transfer of these services to the stewardship of new operators. We believe this will ensure that these services and our employees working in them have the very best opportunity to continue to flourish, develop and thrive going forward.”

Kelvyn Waugh, Prasco UK’s Managing Director, said, “We are continually driven to ensure we provide an industry-leading service, one that ensures our customers receive the best personal and personable service possible and that means we can’t afford to rest on our laurels and we have to continually invest in our services.

“We are all consumers and experience the high-level of service the various leading online companies like Amazon deliver. We cannot afford to not provide our customers with a similar level of service.

“A new web-based system takes at least 18 months in development so, in the fast-paced world of digital distribution where we experience a constant stream of new innovations, whenever we reveal a new system, in all reality it is on the verge of being out of date which is why we are continually working on something new that is able to speed up our services and deliver as efficiently as possible.”

Prasco has also invested in its warehouse that significantly increases its level of available parts which have been steadily arriving on site over recent weeks. Its delivery fleet has also been increased to further speed up its next day delivery service.

WorldSkills winners to be revealed

The winners will be invited to represent Squad UK at WorldSkills Lyon next September, when more than 1,500 competitors from over 65 countries will take part.

WorldSkills has been developed to upskill and develop talent from all backgrounds and abilities, with 97% of previous entrants saying the competition improved their technical skills and 93% saying the competition improved their personal and employability skills.
