Repairer profile: Drive Vauxhall Bury St Edmunds

Here, ARC360 catches up with Jason Bond, Group Bodyshop Director at Drive Motor Retail, after Drive Vauxhall Bury St Edmunds recently won the Enterprise Repair Partner Award 2024 for Best Customer Repair Partner – South East.

How would you ‘sell’ your business to prospective capacity acquirers?

We provide a comprehensive service from diagnosis to completion. By offering services that cover every step of the repair process, from initial diagnostics and estimates through to parts procurement, repairs and final inspections and authorisation, we remove all the pressure from the customer.

Our business is also fully supported by the owners, and, rare for a dealer-owned facility, we are enhancing our online presence with a website in development to help us connect with customers in a digital age.

What makes your business ‘award winning’?

The level of technical expertise within our business is exceptional. Our workforce has years of experience and that means our clients feel more confident knowing they’re working with seasoned professionals able to deliver good service and consistent support every time.

We are also an outward-looking business able and willing to adapt and adjust to a changing industry. As part of that, we made some rationalising decisions at the start of the year to be even more flexible and efficient.

We are not afraid of change. We embrace it and are always looking at ways we can do things differently, particularly in relation to the electrification of the market.

How would you describe the industry at present?

There are many factors influencing the industry now, which makes it quite a challenging and unpredictable sector. Not least of these is the drive towards more environmentally-friendly operations, which is being driven by government targets and legislation. As part of that, we are delighted to announce that we have achieved carbon neutrality in accordance with PAS 2060, as declared by ECA Business Energy for the second year in a row.

Electrification is also a significant challenge, especially with uncertainty around how the ZEV Mandate will be applied to vans. Dealerships need to balance EV and ICE sales while still meeting customer demand.

What do you see as your greatest opportunity?

We are dedicated to looking after our clients for life, and the level of support a dealership is able to offer is a comforting option for any customer. We are a one-stop shop for all their needs and they know there is someone on hand to talk to every time. In the event of an incident we can generally provide free courtesy cars or transport to take our customers home or to their place of work, while working with the majority of insurance companies enables us to coordinate repairs with the least possible inconvenience.

Building on the relationships we already have with our customers and developing an even wider customer-base is a great opportunity for us moving forward.

What one issue do you feel will impact the sector most in the coming years?

Across the industry businesses face a constant challenge to keep pace with vehicle technology. That is the technology within vehicles, new technologies around communication with customers, and digitalisation within the supply chain.

On top of this, skills remains an urgent concern with too few young people joining the sector. An aging workforce means the issue is only going to become more severe in the coming years.

What steps are you taking to future-proof the business?

We provide constant technician training to ensure they can continue to handle modern vehicles safely and their qualifications are up to date. Our technicians are fully trained in body work from small dents to major repairs, and we have the latest equipment to make sure all work is carried out to the highest quality.

We are also increasing our apprenticeship teams whilst staying focused on our increased running costs.

Snapshot insights:

  • Number of sites: 8
  • Approx jobs per week: circa 195
  • Number of staff: 121
  • Approx work mix: 90% insurance, 5% internal, 3% retail, 2% Warranty
  • Paint partner: PPG
  • Distribution partner: Morelli

Prime Minister overhauls apprenticeships to support opportunity

The government is boosting opportunities for young people through ambitious apprenticeship reforms in England.

The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson have announced a new growth and skills levy which will replace the existing apprenticeship levy and include new foundation apprenticeships.

These new apprenticeships will give young people a route in to careers in critical sectors, enabling them to earn a wage whilst developing vital skills.

The new levy will also allow funding for shorter apprenticeships, giving learners and employers greater flexibility over their training than under the existing system – where apprenticeships must run for at least 12 months.

The training eligible for funding under the new levy will develop over time, informed by Skills England’s assessment of priority skills needs.

The Department for Education will set out further details on the scope of the offer and how it will be accessed in due course.

To fund this, employers are being asked to rebalance their funding for apprenticeships, asking them to invest in younger workers. This will also involve businesses funding more of their level 7 apprenticeships – equivalent to a master’s degree and often accessed by older or already well qualified employees – outside of the levy.

The first report from Skills England, the government’s new body for the skills system, has also been published today [24 September 2024]. It provides an initial assessment of the nation’s working skills, as well as future skills needs and gaps which employers are struggling with across the country.

The report has found that employer investment in training has been in steady decline over the past decade, with training expenditure at its lowest level since records began in 2011, with investment per employee down by 19% in real terms. This highlights the need for government reforms to the skills and apprenticeships system.

It also shows that, across the UK, almost 1 in 10, or over 2.5 million roles are in critical demand, with more than 90% being in roles that require training or education.

The government launched Skills England in July to help identify skills needs. Skills England will play a crucial role in determining which types of training will be eligible for the expanded growth and skills levy and will set out shortly how they will work with stakeholders to inform their advice to DfE.

The need for jobs and skills varies across industries, with the health and social care sector experiencing the highest demand, followed by education, manufacturing, and science and technology.

Euro NCAP begins Truck Safe testing

Euro NCAP has begun testing as part of its new Truck Safe programme.

The programme has been introduced to tackle the disproportionate number of truck fatalities across Europe, where trucks represent only three per cent of all vehicles but are involved in almost 15% of road fatalities.

The Euro NCAP Truck Safe rating scheme is a first for the sector and will enable all stakeholders in the freight industry to identify and assess the safety level of trucks. Not only will this deliver enhanced safety for drivers but also create financial and strategic opportunities for those operators that invest in the safest vehicles, making the scheme attractive to insurers, shippers, hauliers and truck makers.

The first seven trucks being tested are the DAF XF, Iveco S-WAY, MAN TGX, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Actros, Renault Trucks T, Scania R-series, and Volvo FH.

Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General Euro NCAP, said, “The new tests will address real-world collisions and encourage manufacturers to fit collision avoidance technologies and improve driver vision.”

Test results will be announced on 20 November.

HORIBA MIRA unveils UK-first crash testing facility

Automotive engineering consultancy HORIBA MIRA has opened the UK’s first vehicle crash testing facility capable of testing frontal car-to-car impacts.

These collisions are responsible for more deaths than any other accident type, according to Euro NCAP.

HORIBA MIRA’s new Passive Safety Centre Crash Facility doubles the length of the previous Crash Facility runway from 85m to 170m, enabling ‘car-to-car Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier’ (MPDB) crash tests to be carried out in the UK for the first time.

State-of-the-art high-speed cameras have also been installed to support post-crash data analysis.

Graeme Stewart, HORIBA MIRA’s Chief Technical Officer, said, “The MPDB test is integral to the vehicle development work that’s needed to help vehicle makers fully understand frontal, car-to-car impacts and to develop – with support and guidance from our engineers – the vehicle safety improvements that will reduce casualties for that type of accident scenario.

“We already have world-class active safety testing capability and facilities at HORIBA MIRA, but the UK has never had this level of passive testing capability before. We’re delighted we could secure the necessary support to bring that to fruition.

“Opening our new Crash Facility is a landmark moment, allowing us to support all legislative and consumer standards, as well as to conduct the important vehicle development work that will support the global automotive industry’s bid to design safer vehicles.”

Roisin Hopkins, Chief Commercial Officer, added, “Opening our Passive Safety Centre Crash Facility not only allows the UK to make an even bigger contribution to the push to reduce serious and fatal injuries on the roads, but it also means we can provide a one-stop automotive safety test engineering solution to customers from across the world.”
