With National Insurance (NI) thresholds set to change from 1 April, businesses across the UK are being encouraged to assess how the adjustments will impact their payroll costs. Employers and employees alike may see shifts in their contributions, making it essential to plan ahead.
To support businesses in navigating these changes, the National Body Repair Association (NBRA) has launched a National Insurance Calculator. This tool, available to both members and non-members, provides a quick and straightforward way to estimate current NI contributions and understand the financial impact of the upcoming reforms.
The changes come as part of wider government adjustments to tax and employment policies, which could have significant implications for payroll budgets. Employers are advised to take proactive steps to ensure compliance and manage their costs effectively.
While the calculator offers a useful estimate, it is intended as a guide only and does not constitute financial or legal advice. For the most accurate calculations, businesses are encouraged to seek professional guidance from an accountant or HMRC.
With just weeks until the changes take effect, now is the time for businesses to review their payroll strategies and take control of their costs.

Automotive industry charity Ben is inviting anyone who works or has worked in the sector to share their experiences to help it mould its support services to better suit the industry.
Its Health and Wellbeing survey 2023 has been designed to help the charity identify the issues that have most impacted colleagues over the last year.
The information is collected to ensure the charity provides the support services people need now and in the future. It also enables Ben to work with employers to introduce support measures relevant to their employees.
Last year’s survey found that 99% of automotive workers were personally affected by a health and wellbeing issue over the 12-month period, with stress the most common issue, followed by poor sleep and low mood
Rachel Clift, health and wellbeing director at Ben, said: “We would like as many people as possible from our industry family to take part in our annual survey so we can gain vital insights into what’s currently going on from a health and wellbeing perspective. This then enables us to focus our efforts on supporting people in the right way, with the right resources.”
Motor insurance premiums reached a record high in the second quarter of 2023, with the average comprehensive policy now £511.
This is a seven per cent rise on the first quarter and 21% up on the same quarter of 2022.
According to the Association of British Insurers, price rises have been driven by rising repair costs, which have soared by 33% in a year, wage inflation that is up to 40% for some insurers, and a 12-21% increase in the cost of replacement parts.
ABI data also revealed that renewals were up by £36 on the previous quarter to £471, while new policies increased by £21 to £566.
Meanwhile, insurers paid out £2.4bn in all motor insurance claims in the first quarter of this year, a rise of 14% on the first quarter of 2022.
Mervyn Skeet, the ABI’s Director of General Insurance Policy, said:“These continue to be tough times for many motorists and motor insurers alike. With many families facing higher cost of living bills, no one wants to see the cost of their motor insurance rise. Insurers remain determined to ensure that motor insurance remains as competitively priced as possible, but this has become increasingly challenging, given the continued rising costs that they are facing.
“We would urge anyone concerned about being able to afford their insurance to speak to their motor insurer to see what options might be available. And despite cost pressures, it can still pay to shop around to get the policy that best meets your needs at the most competitive price.”

Deadline day for revised BS 10125 comments
Today (Friday, 14 January) is the final day for industry stakeholders to comment on the proposed revisions of BS 10125, the specification for the vehicle damage repair process.
Updates to the specification, which include updated technical clarifications around ADAS and electric vehicles, revised proof of competence pathways and standardised repair methods, were put out for public consultation in early November.
AW was the first to sign up for Thatcham Research’s EV Ready training programme in August 2021, and now more than 200 technical and administration staff have completed tailored e-learning modules to become EV Aware. Technical teams have also completed a Level 3 qualification.
Meanwhile, AW has released the fourth episode in its Career For Life docuseries which takes a look at the group’s most highly accredited technician, Simon Bailey.
Sue Cripps, General Manager for Standards and Compliance and a member of the Motofix Group Central Services team, said, “Our sites have performed brilliantly last year. We had eight clear audits with no nonconformances which is an incredible achievement given all the challenges and business upheaval throughout the pandemic.”
It hopes that by adopting Tractable’s AI solutions it will be able to reduce the time from first notification of loss to return of vehicle by as much as two weeks.
Mapfre will first integrate the technology to its operations in Brazil.
Market Intelligence: Wednesday 12 January 2022
ARC360 has published its Market Intelligence Insight for January – in partnership with Trend Tracker – including data from Apple, Google, TomTom, and Department for Transport.
AutoRaise was established in 2012 to address the skills shortage by promoting the industry to young people and then working with employers to find placements for new talent. Its ambition is to help secure up to 2,000 new apprentice positions per year by 2025, with a retention rate exceeding 80% by 2027.
CVS makes flying start
Castle Coachworks has introduced a sister company, Castle Vehicle Servicing, to add first-class mechanical repair and vehicle servicing to its existing bodyshop and accident repair business.
Located on the same Northampton site but operating independently, CVS has serviced more than 40 in the two months since launch.
The task force was broken down into three main working groups: Race and Ethnicity; Physical and Non-Visible Disabilities; and Gender Identity. Each has now presented interim results, with the final recommendations due before the IMI Dinner on 17 March.
Step forward in spot repair
ARC360 partner Mirka has introduced its Iridium SR abrasive for spot repair. Iridium SR features new three-dimensional technology with triangular silicon carbide grains which form new edges whenever they break down during the sanding process, making the product a long-life solution.
Iridium SR is best paired with Mirka’s ergonomic cordless tools.
Repairify adds diagnostics to product portfolio
Repairify has signed a global supplier contract with LAUNCH, meaning it will now be able to offer automotive diagnostic tools and solutions to its customers. Furthermore, the partnership means Repairify can provide remote OEM and OEM-compatible diagnostic and parts programming across a wider geographical footprint.
As a result it expects to see a significant restructure and downsizing of dealer networks, with many sites entering the independent market and smaller independents seeking the security and virtual scale provided by franchise networks.

Costs rise as supply chains feel squeeze
The cost of repair rose 14% between H1 2019 and H1 2021 and is likely to continue to climb according to the latest research from Trend Tracker.
Using Audatex data as basis for its repair insight, data shows parts and paint rose 12% and 13% respectively between 2019 and 2021, whilst ‘additional costs’ – those relating to areas such as Covid-19 charges and ADAS calibrations – rose by 46% during the same period.
NBRA to host green awards
The NBRA will host its Greener Bodyshop Awards on Thursday 9 September 2021 to bring together bodyshops and suppliers of green services and products to the industry.
Chris Weeks, Director of the National Body Repair Association (NBRA), said, “Following the success of the first Greener Bodyshop Awards ceremony in 2019, we will be holding a second bigger event later this year which will recognise vehicle body repairers in the industry who are committed to reducing their impact on the environment, by implementing measures for pollution and energy reduction.”
‘Very large’ driving test backlog
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has acknowledged a “very large” backlog of circa 440,000 driving tests due to the pandemic.
According to the BBC, he said the DVLA has put in place a recovery plan to increase the number of tests carried out every day. He added, “I will personally be seeing to them keeping to track on that recovery plan because young people need to be able to take their tests and pass.”
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said its testing capacity was limited in Scotland as centres must ensure people observe two metre physical distancing. Only one metre distancing is required south of the border.
The DVSA also revealed that the number of practical tests carried out in the last year had dropped by 72.7% from 2019 to 2020.
Covid-related issues continue to hit production
UK car production rose dramatically in May, according to the latest SMMT figures but still face ongoing Covid-related issues.
Some 54,962 cars rolled off production lines compared to just 5,314 a year ago. Performance, however, was still far below pre-pandemic levels, down -52.6% on the same month in 2019.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “May’s figures continue to look inflated when compared to last year’s near total standstill of production lines. The recovery of car production is, however, still massively challenged here and abroad by global supply shortages, particularly semiconductors.”
Carpenters Group joins MGAA
Carpenters Group, the legal firm providing third-party claims services to insurers, brokers and MGAs, has joined the Managing General Agents’ Association (MGAA) as a Supplier Member.
The partnership will ensure that members of the MGAA have access to Carpenters’ fully outsourced claims services encompassing FNOL claims handling, to TPA services through to a comprehensive Defendant litigation capability to trial.
The move comes as MGAs get to grips with the new demands placed upon them by the implementation of the Civil Liability Act.
IPPR suggests EV focus could see 28% rise in car ownership
It also claims it would result in an 11% rise in car traffic between 2021 and 2050.
The IPPR report argues that to be fair to all, the UK government’s upcoming plan for decarbonising transport must focus on improving people’s quality of life – and this cannot be achieved through a shift to electric vehicles alone.
IPPR is a registered charity and the UK’s pre-eminent progressive think tank.
AND-E UK is part of Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe (AND-E) which is part of the MS&AD group, one of Asia’s largest insurers. Combining AND-E UK’s significant capacity and motor industry experience with Flock’s risk intelligence and policy management platform, fleet managers can now access insurance tailored to their operations and designed to help improve safety over time.
Copart celebrates International Women in Engineering Day
Rachael’s career with Copart began over five years ago when she joined the business as a Claims Settlement Advisor. She moved into an administrative role within the Vehicle Engineering team, before pursuing a career as a Vehicle Image Engineer.
Rachael said, “Now that the last remaining covid restrictions are easing, there have been reports in the news that road traffic has now risen above pre-pandemic levels for the first time. As a business, we are certainly seeing the effects of this and the volume of accident-damaged vehicles coming through Copart have increased.”
ERS puts stop to £63,000 PI fraud
Specialist motor insurer ERS has successfully pursued a private prosecution against three fraudsters who made false allegations against its’ client in an effort to secure £63,000 in personal injury damages.
It is the first time an insurer has used the Fraud act to secure convictions against both a claimant as well as the witnesses supporting the claim and reaffirms ERS’ zero-tolerance approach to motor insurance fraud.
All three individuals, who were employed as taxi drivers in High Wycombe, were successfully convicted of fraud by misrepresentation. The Claimant received an 18-month suspended prison sentence and the two witnesses each received a community order. All three parties lost their taxi licences as a result of their convictions.
Bowled over
Fix Auto Bradford South found itself in the national limelight this week after local cricketer Asif Ali literally smashed his ball for six… and shattered the rear window of his car in the process.
The comical incident occurred last weekend as Asif was playing for Illingworth St Mary Cricket Club which the Yorkshire repairer has sponsored for the last five years.
After being initially reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper, the story went national with Asif’s misfortune being reported by the BBC, ITV and Sky News along with numerous national newspapers including The Mirror, Daily Mail and Telegraph.
