Repair sector urged to act now to secure apprenticeship talents

As exam season nears, vehicle repair employers are being urged to act fast to secure the best young talent through apprenticeships before the summer rush.

According to Apprenticeship Central, a surge in student interest means businesses that recruit early will be best placed to attract high-quality candidates.

Eleanor Baker Barnes, Commercial Director at Apprenticeship Central, said: “We’re already seeing a significant number of candidates reach out to us to discuss apprenticeship routes, and decisions are being made now – employers who move early will have their pick of the very best candidates.”

Recent data shows that 41% of young people exploring post-school options are now considering apprenticeships. With interest peaking during the summer term, Apprenticeship Central sees this as a golden opportunity for employers to future-proof their workforce.

Apprenticeship Central states that ambitious, work-ready individuals want to earn while they learn and are ready to start building their careers, and is warning repairers not to wait until summer, by which time many top-tier candidates may already be placed.

Apprenticeship Central specialises in apprentice recruitment and retention across the vehicle repair sector. Their fully outsourced service takes on the legwork of hiring – from initial business consultation to a tailored recruitment campaign, screening, pre-employment programmes and final interviews.

GPS opens new delivery hub in newbury

The Green Parts Specialists (GPS), a leading green parts supplier, has launched a new delivery hub in Newbury, reinforcing its distribution footprint across the south of England.

The new facility joins GPS’s existing delivery centres in Skelmersdale, Gloucester, and Dumfries, bringing the company’s sustainable vehicle parts operations even closer to customers in the southern region. This move forms part of GPS’s broader strategy to boost regional distribution and reduce environmental impact.

The Newbury hub will serve as a key southern base, enabling GPS to streamline its logistics and eliminate the need for long-distance deliveries from its Skelmersdale headquarters.

Lewis Woolnough, Sales Director at GPS, commented: “By regularly distributing parts to our Newbury hub, we can eliminate multiple long-distance journeys from our Skelmersdale HQ and operate more efficiently and sustainably.

“Not only will the addition of this hub provide a faster and more efficient delivery service to customers in the south of England, but it will also reduce our road miles and help us to lower our carbon footprint.”

GPS has been undergoing significant growth since its acquisition in 2023 by global vehicle remarketing and recycling leader Copart. The Newbury hub is one of the first steps in an ambitious development plan that includes infrastructure upgrades, new equipment, and a wider operational reach.

With demand for green parts increasing across the automotive sector, GPS is positioning itself to meet growing sustainability expectations while maintaining its leadership in the recycled vehicle parts market.

This latest investment highlights GPS’s commitment to both customer service and environmental performance as it continues to scale its green parts distribution across the UK.

Silverlake named leading Hampshire business

Silverlake Automotive Recycling has been recognised as one of the top-performing private companies in the county, earning ‘Leading Hampshire Business’ status in the first-ever Hampshire Limited Report 2025 by Grant Thornton UK Advisory & Tax LLP.

The Southampton-based vehicle recycling centre was ranked 38th in the report for average EBITDA margin, following analysis of Hampshire’s top 599 privately owned firms. The report spotlights companies that demonstrate exceptional financial performance and meaningful contributions to the regional economy. It evaluated businesses over a three-year period using growth in turnover and average EBITDA margin as its key metrics.

Silverlake processes end-of-life vehicles at its Authorised Treatment Facility, achieving an impressive 96.7% recovery rate per vehicle. It supplies quality graded, warranty-assured reclaimed parts, offering an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to new components.

Beyond its green credentials, Silverlake plays a major role in local employment and community support. With more than 160 staff – 73% of whom live within 10 miles of the site – the company plans to create over 60 new jobs as part of its ongoing expansion. It also supports over 25 charities and works closely with emergency services, providing salvage vehicles for training exercises.

Silverlake also sponsors Eastleigh FC’s stadium and collaborates on local community programmes. Its U-Donate-a-Car scheme allows vehicle owners to donate the proceeds from their cars to local charities, aligning sustainability with social impact.

Nigel Le Bas, Corporate Finance Advisory Director at Grant Thornton UK, called Silverlake’s inclusion in the Top 50 “a remarkable achievement,” adding: “It showcases their operational excellence and inspires continued innovation in the motor salvage sector.”

Managing Director, Allen Prebble said: “We’re incredibly humbled by this recognition. We’ve been based in Hampshire for 79 years and are proud to support the local economy. This award is a testament to our team’s dedication, and we’ll continue to invest in our people, our infrastructure and the environment.”
