Fix Auto Swansea West announces key acquisition

Fix Auto Swansea West has expanded operations with the acquisition of Pontypridd-based bodyshop S&F Motors.

The investment comes just a year after Fix Auto Swansea joined the network, with S&F Motors now renamed Fix Auto Pontypridd.

The 4,000 sqft site includes one spraybooth and one curtain-sided ‘back up’ booth and six workbays, with 12 productive sand four non-productives.

Co-owner of Fix Auto Swansea West Matthew said, “When we joined Fix Auto UK 12 months ago we expressed our determination and drive to become a multi-site operator and expand our business and I am delighted to say we have achieved that first goal. The Fix Auto Pontypridd centre really is perfectly positioned to meet not only our needs, but those of Fix Auto UK.”

Fellow owner Paul Gravell added, “We started out repairing one car at a time during Covid. That was less than five years ago and we both have to pinch ourselves when we stand back and realise just what we’ve achieved in that short time. We have received tremendous advice and support from family, friends and colleagues who’ve helped to make it happen for us but, as we’ve previously said, this really is just the start of our plans to continually grow and develop.”

European Commission to impose EV tariffs on China

An investigation by the European Commission has concluded that electric vehicle manufacturers in China are benefitting unfairly from subsidisation.

It believes European manufacturers are being put at a disadvantage as a result of this and now hopes to resolve the issue with Chinese authorities.

However, it says that if discussions are not successful it will impose new tariffs on EVs imported from China from 4 July, including 17.4% on BYD models, 20% on cars produced by Geely, and 38.1% on SAIC-manufactured vehicles.

Average tariffs of 21% will be imposed on other Chinese manufacturers who have co-operated with the investigation and 38.1% on those who have not.

ACEA Director General, Sigrid de Vries said, “What the European automotive sector needs above all else to be globally competitive is a robust industrial strategy for electromobility,” stated. This means ensuring access to critical materials and affordable energy, a coherent regulatory framework, sufficient charging and hydrogen refilling infrastructure, market incentives, and so much more.”

The investigation, which began late last year, will continue over the summer before the Commission decides whether to propose permanent anti-subsidy measures.

Thatcham Research unveils new ADAS course

Thatcham Research has launched a new ADAS Aware e-learning course to address the existing skills gap around the technology.

The course provides technicians with a comprehensive understanding of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), including how the different technologies operate and how to accurately identify and calibrate them.

Created by in-house experts from Thatcham Research’s Automotive Academy, the online-only ADAS Aware course offers learning flexibility while also delivering the high levels of competency required to identify ADAS and conduct repairs without compromising their functionality.

Dean Lander, Head of Repair Sector Services at Thatcham Research, said, “ADAS technology is a pillar of modern automotive design. The importance of understanding how it factors into the repair process cannot be overstated. Robust knowledge of how different repair techniques impact the functionality of ADAS features is crucial, with even the slightest sensor misalignment having a pronounced effect on the performance of safety-critical systems.

“ADAS Aware will provide technicians with the skills needed to identify these technologies, understand requirements in advance of repair and feel empowered to carry out repairs around ADAS technology in a timely and efficient manner, reducing key to key times.

“The training also provides an overview of how ADAS factors into the journey to autonomy, a sector of the UK car parc which is set to expand in the near future which garages must be prepared for.”

SYNETIQ launches carbon calculation project

IAA company SYNETIQ is developing its sustainability strategy by calculating the carbon footprint of its auction vehicles.

Conducted in collaboration with sustainability consultants Oakdene Hollins as part of its sustainability strategy, Our Road to Tomorrow, the study was conducted to deliver insights into the company’s emissions and to identify areas for improvement.

Results highlighted that transportation of auction vehicles was the primary contributor of emissions, followed by vehicle processing and forklift movements.

SYNETIQ is now collaborating with Masters students from Sheffield Hallam University to conduct a study on its HGV fleet. This study will explore innovative solutions and trial new software aimed at optimising route planning to minimise stem mileage in collection and parts delivery vehicles.

Tom Rumboll, UK Managing Director for IAA and CEO of SYNETIQ said, “We are committed to driving positive change in our industry and minimising our environmental impact. By quantifying the carbon footprint of auction vehicles and taking proactive steps to reduce emissions, we are setting a new standard for sustainability in the automotive sector.”

ARC360 turns focus on new players

ARC360 hosted its fourth Breakfast Think Tank recently, when attention was turned to the growing impact of new international players entering the UK sector.

After considering skills, electric vehicles and volumes in previous Think Tank sessions, this week the focus was turned on new brands within the domestic market and how they are impacting claims and repairs in terms of parts availability, methods, and insurance.

It was revealed that there are now 75 new brands with European export ambitions, with many of these now coming from China.

And while some European countries might be more cautious to external influence, preferring instead to support their own domestic automotive manufacturing interests, the UK is at the moment open to Chinese investment.

As such, it is expected that a flood of brands will enter the market in the coming years.

Setting the pace so far is BYD, which has already launched three models into the UK – the SEAL, DOLPHIN, and ATTO. It plans to release four more within the next year as its influence continues to grow.

Meanwhile, ZEEKR – backed by Geely Automobile Holdings – has recently secured Euro NCAP approval, while Great Wall Motors has established a UK footprint through its sub-brand ORA, which has released the Funky Cat.

The challenge comes though in differentiating between the brands, and separating the long-term successes from short-term flash in the pans.

One repairer said, “We are following a watching brief at the moment. Some brands are launching into the UK with no aftersales strategy at all so we need to ask ourselves if we can repair the vehicle safely, do we have access to parts and methods?”

In some cases the answer is yes. BYD, which aims to become the largest vehicle manufacturer in the world, is working closely with UK organisations to ensure a smooth introduction to the UK, but others it was suggested appear a little less-proactive.

“Chinese vehicle manufacturers behave differently so the market will need to adjust. There is a level of openness from some brands but others are not always engaging with insurers, there are no methods or parts and that drives up the cost of even minor repairs. I think we will see a massive mix of repairability and quality over the 75 models, so we can expect quite a bumpy road for a little while.”
