Mobile servicing could ease EV workload

Fleet Assist believes that EVs could impact the aftermarket with many repairers turning to mobile services, particularly when it comes to EVs.

The company now has more than 400 mobile units on its network, ensuring it’s able to deliver a nationwide service. It says many of these are EV-ready and its findings suggest that servicing an EV is actually cheaper and quicker than ICE equivalents because of fewer parts and less wear on tyres and brakes.

Vincent said, “It’s important for all leasing and rental fleets to be aware of the challenges faced by garages and some of the new initiatives likely to be forthcoming that will ensure both industries continue to work in harmony. Potentially in the longer term, EVs will cause excess capacity within the UK garage network with more companies chasing less work so it is not simply a case of putting up labour rates. If they do, they risk overpricing themselves and reducing their workshop volumes.

“We maintain that both garages and OEMs should consider adopting a smart approach to meeting customer driver expectations that require a focus on service delivery. The landscape forming where garages look to increase fees to address a shortfall in aftersales revenues risk being left behind in the longer term.”

Sensors critical to self-driving but pose challenges

Euro NCAP’s European New Car Assessment Programme, which has been updated this year to reflect technological developments, particularly around RADAR and LiDAR, suggests that the industry is still some way from full autonomy being introduced safely.

The new testing programme found that sensors can significantly reduce the likelihood of collisions, but was still some way short of enabling full self-driving cars.

Tom Leggett, Vehicle Technology Specialist, at Thatcham Research, said, “One of the most challenging aspects of collision avoidance is detecting and responding to rapidly approaching motorcycles. Motorcycles often have a small visual profile and can be difficult to identify, especially in complex traffic situations. Vehicles fitted with technology such as LiDAR significantly improve motorcycles’ potential detection and tracking, leading to enhanced safety for both motorcycle riders and other road users.”

The first car tested under the new 2023 Euro NCAP Active Safety scenarios was the NIO EL7, which performed well across most testing environments.

Tom said, “The car demonstrated its LiDAR-based technology has high-fidelity performance in avoiding ever-increasing complex crash types. However, the Car-to-Car Crossing at higher speeds and Car-to-Motorcycle Crossing proved too challenging for the active safety systems to achieve the highest grade.”

While the most advanced LiDAR systems now have the capability to detect lane markings, read road signs, and even identify road hazards like potholes, they comes with challenges.

Tom said, “An autonomous vehicle would need to have an extremely accurate and real-time picture of the world around it in order to piece together decision-making and action processes close to the level of complexity that a human can manage. This is especially true in urban environments, where the vehicle encounters a variety of vehicles and vulnerable road users moving in many different directions and speeds in real-time. The current technology is some way off being able to do that at the high fidelity needed for it to be consistently safe.

“Furthermore, the number of qualified personnel available to service this equipment isn’t appropriate for the technology to become rapidly widespread.”

EV market realigning after price collapse

The crash in value of electric vehicles has been startling but it will not continue as the perfect storm that saw prices plummet by as much as 40% begins to pass.

This is according to Derren Martin, Director of Valuations at cap hpi, who said the rare circumstances that converged to disrupt the EV market are now easing.

He was speaking during ARC360’s specialist EV event, EV-olution; Gaining Ground Together, which was held at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry this week.

Opening the day with a session entitled, Vehicle Market Intelligence, Derren provided an overview of the market in recent years, revealing the substantial impact of Covid-19 on both sales and values, but said that trading conditions were finally beginning to settle again now and EV momentum should pick up again as we move towards 2030.

Volumes up

Data revealed that just 36,444 EVs were sold in the UK in 2019, but this figure rose to 266,896 in 2022, representing a seven-fold increase in four years. There are now nearly 800,000 pure EVs on UK roads, but that figure will inflate to more than 2.5 million by 2026, which equates to a seven per cent share of the vehicle car parc.

Driving this, apart from environmental regulations and increased consumer choice, is the fall in prices of EVs. While they were up to £10,000 more expensive than ICE equivalents, some models are now about £5,000 cheaper, with average values collapsing by 37% in the last eight months alone.

Values down

Derren said, “They’ve gone absolutely through the floor. Supply increased, electricity prices went up and petrol prices went down. It was a perfect storm. I spoke to one dealer group who sold five EVs for a loss of £26,000. We don’t expect to see prices go up again, and if they do it will be slowly.”

This has had a knock-on effect on the used EV market, with many drivers now reluctant to sell their vehicles and incur a substantial loss.

However, Derren says the market is realigning and has warned repairers to expect more and more used EVs in their shops, saying that when owners do sell again, the models will be older, with more mileage, and likely to need more repairs and servicing.

Used cars

But while the EV market is still volatile, the wider used car market is booming. Sales in the first five months of this year were already 70% of last year’s total volume. This is despite an almost unprecedented spike in values during 2021.

Derren explained that, typically, values of used cars depreciate three per cent, but Covid-19 turned the market upside down with demand increasing as supply decreased, resulting in a staggering 29% rise in average values.

This was recorded across all fuel types, and while the price of used EVs has collapsed, used petrol and diesel models have held their values and are expected to remain strong into the future.

ARC360’s specialist EV-olution event was sponsored by Thatcham Research and ControlExpert, along with ARC360 Corporate Partners: BASF, CAPS, Copart, Entegral, Enterprise, Mirka, Nationwide Vehicle Recovery Assistance, S&G Response, and Solera Audatex, and Partners: Gemini Accident Repair Centres, Repairify, and Prasco UK.

New car sales spike 25.8%

The new car market surged by more than a quarter in June, making it the 11th straight month of growth.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 177,266 vehicles were registered in the month, meaning almost a million (949,720) new cars joined UK roads in the first six months of 2023, with total registrations up 18.4%

Deliveries of petrol cars increased 22.7% while those of hybrids and plug-in hybrids rose by 40.1% and 65.5% respectively. Diesel registrations were down 13.5% but battery electric vehicle registrations were up 39.4%.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “The new car market is growing back and growing green, as the attractions of electric cars become apparent to more drivers. But meeting our climate goals means we have to move even faster. Most electric vehicle owners enjoy the convenience and cost saving of charging at home but those that do not have a driveway or designated parking space must pay four times as much in tax for the same amount of energy. This is unfair and risks delaying greater uptake, so cutting VAT on public EV charging will help make owning an EV fairer and attractive to even more people.”

We have a clear focus on acquiring strong well-established businesses that support our growth strategy and when the opportunity presented itself we jumped at the chance to add Apollo and Balgores to our operations. I’d like to personally thank Graham, Tracy and Paul for trusting us with the next chapter in the development of their companies. We are very excited about the prospects and look forward to working with the incumbent management teams on the journey ahead.”

Graham and Tracy Eyles said, “We’re very proud of what we’ve built at Apollo and when we decided it was time to let someone else take on the baton it was clear that Richard and the team at Steer were the obvious choice to do that.”

Paul Austin said, “Over the last 40 years Balgores has become synonymous with quality repairs and outstanding customer service but now is the time for Steer Automotive Group to take the business forward. Automotive production continues forwards momentum

UK car production rose for the fourth month in a row in May, surging by 26.9% year on year to 79,046 units.

This is according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which reported that manufacturers produced 16,762 more units than in the same month last year.

Meanwhile, combined hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicle volumes were up 95.4% to 27,636 units and representing 35% of all cars made in the month.

Commercial vehicle production also rose in the month, up 36.9% to 10,813 units.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Another month of growth for UK car production is good news and a sign that, despite challenging economic conditions, the industry’s foundations are strong. But with weak GDP growth, high inflation and rising interest rates, it’s crucial that UK car factories stay globally competitive. All political parties must recognise the strategic importance of this sector and back our call for an industrial strategy that supports local production, assures export market access and attracts further investment to safeguard our future.”
