Silverlake supports Ukraine effort with first aid kits

Silverlake is partnering with charity UK Sunflower Aid to support refugees in Ukraine.

It is sending recycled vehicle first aid kits to the country as well as fuelling all the vans needed to transport them there.

To date it has collected and shipped over 1,500 first aid kits from its Sheffield site.

Paul Fullick of UK Sunflower Aid said, “We have moved almost 600 tons of humanitarian aid and medical supplies directly to the people and hospitals in Ukraine. The support we get from organisations like Silverlake is essential and helps us to deliver this life saving aid. Thank you to everyone at Silverlake who help keep the wheels moving, the people of Ukraine are extremely grateful.”

Allen Prebble, MD at Silverlake said, “We know Paul from our sponsorship of the Silverlake C1 Racing Series. He is a racing driver with Team BRIT, a disability motorsport team that races in the Series.  When I heard what he was doing to support the people of Ukraine I knew Silverlake had to get involved. Recycling vehicle first aid kits was a meaningful and valuable way we could help, as well as supplying tanks of fuel for the aid vans setting out for the Ukraine border. UK Sunflower Aid has achieved so much and we are proud to be helping them to make a difference to those caught in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.”

Thatcham Research hosts BYD Product Showcase

For two days in January (Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 January 2024) Thatcham Research played host to a number of invited guests for Chinese vehicle manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) Product Showcase. ARC360 was on hand to explore the products, learn more of the Thatcham Research – BYD relationship, and glean insights in the vehicle manufacturers plans for 2024.

Steer announces Lovells and Pronto acquisition

Steer Automotive Group has acquired all 11 Lovells Auto Body Centres and Pronto Accident Repair Centres.

The integration of Lovells and Pronto, which boasts approvals from the likes of BMW, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz Van, Audi, VW Skoda Seat, Kia and Hyundai, consolidates Steer Group’s current East Midlands’ footprint.

Premiums up another 12% in Q4

New figures from the Association of British Insurers have found that motor insurance premiums rose 12% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Average policies increased from £526 in the third quarter to £627 in the last three months of the year.

Taking the year as whole, prices rose by more than 25% from 2022.

Network benefits

S&G Response has highlighted the benefits of being part of its repair network, including pricing transparency, accurate triage, and ongoing support.

Its network now includes 225 repairers nationwide and 58 specialist HGV repairers.

BASF working towards sustainability standard

BASF’s Coatings division is discussing the introduction of an independent global certification standard to manage demand for sustainable accident repairs and the creation of a uniform standard based on tested criteria.

The criteria will provide a guideline to bodyshops on how to become more sustainable and help them to prepare for the increasing legal requirements such as CO2 emission reports.

GT Motive announces first price increase

GT Motive has announced it first ever price adjustment.

An eight per cent increase will be introduced form 1 March, affecting estimate creation (VQ included, VRN-VIN included), manual estimate creation, system access charges, and VIN query.

London traffic the slowest in the world

London traffic is the slowest in the world, according to a new report published by Tom Tom. It found that a typical 10k drive in London now takes 37 minutes and 20 seconds.

Globally, the report revealed that average speeds decreased in 228 of the 387 cities it analysed.

Automotive apprentices spike by 9%

Automotive apprenticeships rose by nine per cent in the first quarter of the new academic year, according to data from the Institute of the Motor Industry.

It found that the ‘Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)’ pathway was the most popular choice with 1,500 starts, while the ‘Autocare Technician’ pathway also experienced a significant 38% increase, representing 28% of all automotive apprenticeship starts.

2023 safety scores revealed

Euro NCAP has announced that of the 17 safety ratings issued for new cars last year, 14 received five stars and three received four stars.

NBRA signs digital deal with Fixico

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) has secured a digital partnership that will provide its members with comprehensive data-driven insights, enabling them to make better operational decisions and deliver improved customer service.

It is partnering with Fixico, a leading digital car repair management platform, and by integrating its technology it will deliver in-depth data insights to its 720 members to support repair optimisation and monitoring.

WorldSkills UK confirms Pearson partnership

WorldSkills UK has announced a new partnership with leading learning company Pearson.

Pearson will be the official partner of Team UK for the 47th WorldSkills Competition, which takes place in Lyon from 10–15 September.

MOT tests to remain unchanged

The UK government has confirmed that first MOTs will remain at three years after registration and annually thereafter, scrapping plans to extend MOT periods after consulting with the industry.

Meanwhile, the Institute of the Motor Industry has warned that an estimated 73% of MOT testers have still to take their Annual Assessment before the 31 March deadline.

Monolith and About:Energy announce AI partnership

A new partnership between AI software provider Monolith and battery technology innovator About:Energy could accelerate the R&D process around EV batteries for vehicle manufacturers by 12-18 months.

As part of the collaboration, the companies will deliver AI-powered battery modelling, testing and validation to provide manufacturers with deeper insights.

IGA calls for further apprenticeship funding

The Independent Garage Association has called for urgent government support for apprentices.

It has said apprenticeship numbers have fallen 37% since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017 and is now calling on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to introduce additional funding in his Spring Budget.

asTech secures ADAS partnership with Ford

asTech – driven by Repairify has announced it is now a Ford Authorised Service Provider for ADAS.

Shops in the brand’s certified collision network will now be able to use asTech technology and remote services to perform ADAS calibrations for Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

Suzuki tops UKCSI charts

Suzuki GB has been named as the top automotive brand in the latest bi-annual Institute of Customer Service’s UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI).

It finished 15th overall in a list of 270 organisations from across all industries.

VWG unveils specialist AI lab

Volkswagen Group has launched a new AI Lab to support product development.

It will now collaborate with the tech companies in Europe, China and North America to rapidly develop and implement new AI-driven in-car innovations.

Hyundai sales top four million

Hyundai sales in 2023 reached 4,216,898 units worldwide, representing a seven per cent increase on 2022. Meanwhile, revenues were up 14%.

In the fourth quarter alone, sales topped one million, driven by a 5.3% increase in markets outside of Korea.

Volvo sets new sales high

Volvo has reported a 21% increase in revenues in 2023 with the brand setting a new sales record of 708,716 cars.

Meanwhile, EV sales rose 70% to 113,419 units.

Polestar 4 hits UK shores

The Polestar 4 is now officially available in the UK. The model is the brand’s first SUV coupe to launch without a rear window.

Ben publishes new employer newsletter

Automotive charity Ben has unveiled its first newsletter dedicated to automotive employers.

The publication will highlight the services Ben offers to anyone who has worked or is working in the industry, while also sharing upcoming health and wellness awareness campaigns and other industry events.

Included in the first newsletter are details and contents under the Time to Talk Day banner, as well as Ben’s free online programme to help colleagues with money worries.

It also signposts Ben’s Benathlon fundraising event, which takes place throughout March and invites colleagues to complete 100 miles to raise £100 for the charity, as well as the wide range of interactive training around wellness in the workplace and ongoing support initiatives.

Ben has produced the newsletter in response to unprecedented demand for its services.

Since last April it has received upwards of 11,000 calls to its helpline and supported more than 2,700 individuals, both figures representing a 15% year-on-year increase.

The charity now estimates that as many as one in three people working within the industry are experiencing mental health challenges.

Enterprise Mobility publishes ESG successes

Enterprise Mobility has released its latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

The report highlights the organisation’s ongoing efforts to operate as a people-centric, purpose-led and values-based business that embeds sustainability across its global operations.

Highlights include 20,000 colleagues being promoted or moved to new roles globally in the last year, £66m donated to charitable oganisations, and an estimated 1,526 tons of glass recycled and 5,467 tones of materials from tyres recycled in North America alone.

Car thefts up five per cent

New data has found that a car was stolen in Britain every eight minutes and 12 seconds last year.

A total of 64,087 cars were reported stolen to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in 2023, up from 61,106 the previous year, representing a five per cent increase.

Meanwhile the data also revealed that keyless car theft is now the most common tactic used by organised criminals.

The Ford Fiesta was reported stolen more often than any other model (5,976), more than twice that of the second most stolen car, the Ford Focus (2,120). The VW Golf (2,038), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (1,786) and Range Rover Sport (1,631) also made the top five list.

Industry mourns passing of ‘true gentleman’

The UK vehicle repair industry is mourning the loss of dedicated apprentice pioneer, Bob Linwood who sadly passed away on Wednesday 17 January 2024.

Bob was a driving force behind the founding of industry apprenticeship initiative Autoraise in 2015, a year later securing its recognition from the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Bob was CEO of Autoraise until May 2021.

Dane Loosley, another industry stalwart, has also passed this week.

ILC and ARC360 would like to wish our condolences to both Bob and Dane’s families.

Steer secures Oakley investment

Steer Automotive Group has announced substantial new investment from Oakley Capital, a leading pan-European private equity investor.

Oakley will acquire the shares held by Keyhaven Capital Partners and Chiltern Capital while founder Richard Steer and the current management team will continue to lead the business.

Shortlist for What Car? Safety Awards revealed

Thatcham Research has announced the five-car shortlist for the What Car? Safety Award 2024.

Selected by judges based on Euro NCAP test scores as well as passive and active safety technology, the shortlist includes the BMW 5 Series, BYD SEAL, Lexus RZ, Mercedes EQE SUV, and Volkswagen ID.7.

Car insurance premiums soar by 58%

Average car insurance premiums rose by 58% in the last 12 months to £995.

According to the latest Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index, produced in association with WTW, the 58% rise represents an increase of £366 and means premiums have risen for nine consecutive quarters.

White shades black in colour charts

BASF has identified a significant colour shift in car popularity, with white still number one but experiencing a notable decrease in market share.

Meanwhile, its 2023 BASF Colour Report revealed that chromatic colours such as red, blue, brown and beige have remained stable, with a 19% market share.

S&G backs school racing team

S&G is sponsoring Exhausted Racing at Wilmslow High School, helping the team to design, create, market, and race in regional, national and international inter-school competitions.

EV repair costs edge above £3k

Gecko data has revealed that average BEV repairs costs have risen to £3,012, with labour costs at £628 and repair times stretching to 27 days.

Meanwhile, it found there were 968,528 BEVs on UK roads at the end of December.

Innovation tackles deepening pothole problem

Nearly 630,000 potholes were reported across the UK from January to November last year, costing drivers upwards of £500m in repairs.

However, innovation such as self-healing roads and digital maps could soon be available to tackle the issue.

NBRA confirms Greener Bodyshop Awards date

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) has announced that the 2024 Greener Body Shop Awards (GBSA) will take place at the Coventry Building Society Arena on 10 September.

Auto Windscreens signs digital deal with AA

Auto Windscreens has signed a digital claims partnership with The AA, enabling customers to arrange a glass repair or replacement online or via The AA’s app.

Dedicated AFV course set for February

Park Lodge International and Jeff Mack Consultancy will host its next safety course around Alternative Fuelled Vehicles on 6 February.

The eight-hour, IMI-accredited course will take place in Burnley, focusing on three key areas around AFVs: on-scene assessment of battery damage and potential risks; the safe repair of AFVs with high voltage battery damage; the safe storage of damaged AFVs at repair sites.

Tesla defends Autopilot safety standards

Tesla has hit back at media reports critical of its Autopilot technology, arguing that many of the articles lacked context.

It said that data proved its cars were far safer when Autopilot was engaged, revealing that just one crash for every 4.85 million miles was recorded under Autopilot in the fourth quarter of 2022, compared to one crash for every 1.4 million miles driven without it.

Ford launches new gen cruise control

Ford has introduced new generation Adaptive Cruise Control technology to its best-selling Kuga SUV. The system is now able to apply the brakes automatically for curves, junctions and other traffic.

Stellantis signs with SIXT

Stellantis has signed a multi-billion-pound deal with SIXT which could see the mobility service provider buy up to 250,000 Stellantis vehicles in the next three years.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer is investing in Tiamat to support the further development and commercialisation of sodium-ion battery technology.

Hyundai announces Ohme partnership

Hyundai Motor UK has announced a new partnership with smart home charging business Ohme as it continues to develop its elecrification strategy.

Industry mourns passing of ‘true gentleman’

The UK vehicle repair industry is mourning the loss of dedicated apprentice pioneer, Bob Linwood who sadly passed away on Wednesday 17 January 2024.

Bob was a driving force behind the founding of industry apprenticeship initiative Autoraise in 2015, a year later securing its recognition from the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Bob was CEO of Autoraise until May 2021.

Early in 2023 Bob launched his own business, in partnership with his wife Morag: Apprenticeship Central Ltd and ABLE TO (support services) “to help businesses with their marketing activities and to help employers develop their apprenticeship strategy”.

Bob had been involved in the vehicle repair industry for over four decades representing a number of well-known names including AkzoNobel, NIBS and RM.

Such has been Bob’s influence and popularity within the sector, there has been an outpouring of tributes with many referencing his ‘larger than life’ demeanour; his ‘true gentleman’ characteristics; his willingness to find time for people; and his truly caring nature.

Dane Loosley, another industry stalwart has also passed this week. Dane spent many years at Cornhill, then Allianz prior to later spending a period with Audatex UK. In more recent years Dane operated his own consultancy and acted as non-exec director at ABP.

ILC and ARC360 would like to wish our condolences to both Bob and Dane’s families.

BenBus on the road

Automotive industry charity Ben has unveiled its new BenBus, a branded VW Transporter campervan which will raise awareness of the support it offers to those who have worked or are working in the sector.

The Ben on the road team will be visiting sites around the UK to showcase the van and promote the charity’s services.

Meanwhile, Ben is also offering companies the chance to sponsor the vehicle for a year. In return Ben will feature the company’s branding on the van, as well as visiting the company’s site and customers.

Red Sea instability causing knock-on effects

The NBRA has warned of increased parts supply disruption and rising costs within the UK repair sector as a result of instability in the Red Sea.

ARC360 Partner, Prasco UK has said its customers are unlikely to be affected by the situation even though the Doncaster-based parts supplier is experiencing rising shipping costs and up to a two-week delay in receiving goods because of the escalating problems. 

Repair costs creep up in December

Average repair costs rose to over £2,900 in December, a six per cent increase on the same month in 2022, according to data released by Trend Tracker.

It found that with the Christmas break, the number of repairs in the month fell from November tracking at 97% of the total number of repairs in December 2022.

Copart continues expansion

Vehicle remarketing and recycling specialist Copart has announced two significant developments with expansion of its Sandtoft ‘Super Centre’ and its new Operation Centre in St Helens.

Sandtoft sees the acquisition of an ex-IAA/Synetiq site of 20 acres which adjoins the 65 acres of land added recently, creating the largest Copart ‘Super Centre’ in the UK.

Meanwhile, capacity in the North West has increased by 50% with a new 16-acre Operation Centre in St Helens.

Warning signs despite strong sales

EY UK & Ireland Automotive Leader David Borland has warned of difficult times ahead for EV sales. The new car market increased by 9.8% in December while LCVs sales surged by 36% in the month, but BEV sales slowed in both November and December.

Meanwhile, rental firm Hertz is selling about 20,000 EVs from its US fleet due to falling demand.

FCA takes immediate motor finance measures

The Financial Conduct Authority is conducting a review of historical motor finance commission arrangements and sales as a result of rising customer complaints.

It has paused the eight-week deadline for motor finance firms to provide a final response to relevant customer complaints for 37 weeks, while customers will also have 15 months to refer complaints to the Financial Ombudsman rather than six months.

Its report, Driving Auto Forwards, believes increased manufacturing, a growing focus on diversity and sustainability, and new technology in vehicles will demand new skills.

The Stellantis Multi Brand Accident Repair Programme has worked with ECA Business Energy to update its PAS 2060 carbon footprint and management plan. It will now purchase carbon credits through the Net Zero Group this year.

Volvo unveils new sustainability targets

As part of its new sustainability ambitions, Volvo Cars has announced that by 2030 it plans to reduce its CO2 emissions per car by 75%, achieve 30% average recycled content across its fleet, and reduce water use in its operations by 50%.
