Euro NCAP has released new test protocols that will support the framework for its new Truck Safe rating scheme.
The Truck Safe rating scheme will enable industry to accurately assess the safety levels of its fleet and is being introduced after data found that while trucks make up just three per cent of the European car parc they are responsible for 15% of fatalities.
Matthew Avery, Euro NCAP’s Director of Strategic Development, said, “Euro NCAP’s new Truck Safe rating scheme, the first of its kind in the sector, will enable a whole range of stakeholders in the freight industry to assess the safety level of trucks.
“Not only will this deliver enhanced safety for truck drivers, but also protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users in European cities. It is not only about safety, as this programme intends to create strategic opportunities for those operators that invest in the safest vehicles.
“In creating a market for safety, Euro NCAP will encourage manufacturers and suppliers to innovate, further increasing the safety benefits of the scheme as the ratings evolve.”
