In an exclusive interview with ARC360, new NBRA/VBRA director Martyn Rowley discusses his first few months in charge, his plans for the organisation, and how he hopes the NBRA/VBRA can support members and the industry further in the coming years.
How have the first few weeks/months been in post?
Amazing actually, the team has been very welcoming, both office-based and field. The other board directors have been supportive, and the executive board have been ultra-encouraging. It feels like I’ve been here longer than just a few weeks.
What ‘inspired’ you most about the role?
Other industry colleagues, friends, and the most important part was the feeling that I can help, make a difference. Throughout my working life, I’ve served and been there for people who need help. This role just gives me a greater platform to serve.
Can you share a little insight into your career journey that has led to this point?
It’s been a journey of nearly 44 years. I started as a trainee mechanic and worked my way through various departments within dealerships. I’ve held roles as a Service Manager, Bodyshop Manager, and Aftersales Manager. I’ve worked in the field since 2003, with roles at Ford Motor Company, Audatex, and GT Motive. Each role has been a unique experience, but GT Motive was probably my favourite. Now, I’m onto my next challenge, ready to embrace the opportunities ahead.
What is the current set-up and status of the NBRA & VBRA? What are the benefits of membership?
There are many benefits, including an excellent debt recovery service, resolution service, HR services, and methods supply. These are just a few of the perks included in the membership package. We’ll be marketing the value proposition to the industry over the next few months through webinars, roadshows, social media etc.
What are the current top three priorities for you?
Our number one objective is to grow the membership, secondly, be the best voice of the industry, and thirdly, do it all with a smile, open-armed, and ready to help our industry.
How can repairers support the NBRA/VBRA?
It’s not just about repairers; it’s the whole industry. We all need to support each other, and if the NBRA/VBRA can be a big part of that, it would be wonderful.
What will your approach be to developing a more positive and productive relationship with motor insurers?
There are many conversations to be had here. We must look at how the market is changing, with consolidation becoming a greater challenge for smaller independents. They are still vital to the industry, and hopefully, as our membership builds, we, the NBRA/VBRA, can channel their voice to the insurers.
How would you like to see the wider market engage with NBRA/VBRA?
Come and join us! If you’re a repairer, supplier, etc., in our industry, join us to make us stronger and help us be the voice of the industry.
How will the NBRA work with other associations/government for the betterment of the repair sector?
Collaboration is key. Working together with other associations and the government, we aim to enhance and improve the repair sector for the benefit of all.
How do you assess the overall health of the UK repair industry?
Since COVID, repairers are stronger in the marketplace. They currently have the ability to choose contracts or work they want. Consolidation is happening as groups and independents get swallowed up. Labor issues are still a huge problem as our industry skills basket gets smaller. But repairs will always be required, and those skills are needed. We need to open our industry to all, and collaboration among organizations like AutoRaise, School of Thought, ILC, ABP, Body Magazine, and NBRA/VBRA is crucial. Together, we can be a formidable force.

Best bit of business advice ever heard/seen/received…
Many years ago, a dealer principal told me, ‘It’s better to puff the pillows than to have to make the bed.’ It took me a while, but I totally got it when we had inspections from auditors, etc.
What do you currently drive… and what would you like to drive?
I currently drive a Mercedes CLS. My dream supercar would be a 911 Turbo.
