ARC360 introduces inaugural Breakfast Think Tank

ARC360’s first online Breakfast Think Tank took place recently, when more than 20 leading figures from the across the vehicle incident repair sector met to share their views on the year ahead.

The session featured contributions from a panel of experts from vehicle repair, vehicle manufacturing, insurance, training and mobility.

The Think Tank invited the panel to share their thoughts on what lies ahead in 2024, and the overwhelming immediate concern was the continued challenge around people and skills across the sector.

With the average age of technicians in their late 40s, it was suggested that the industry had to ‘get serious’ about raising awareness to younger people and other potential candidates outside of the sector of the fulfilling and varied career paths available within automotive repair.

Attracting the next generation of talent has to be a priority for all stakeholders, it was agreed, with a far more collaborative and targeted approach instead of individual businesses operating in siloes.

“We’re not bringing people in from outside the industry,” said one panellist. “We’re all vying for the same candidates and just taking skills off each other. Every sector is facing a similar challenge, but we need to start competing with other industries rather than each other.”

It was also suggested that greater support for independents was needed, with some reluctant to take on apprentices due to limited time, financial resource and unclear futures ie exit Vs investment. There is also a ‘fear’ among many that their efforts will be wasted with apprentices either dropping out or taking their skills to a higher-paying competitor.

However, a lack of new talent entering the sector is only one part of the puzzle. There is the additional and arguably more immediate challenge in meeting existing demands and productivity levels with a limited pool of skilled resource.

“Apprenticeships are obviously crucial going forward,” said one panellist, “but they won’t address the skills challenges we face now and in the next two or three years.”

The next Breakfast Think Tank will take place in March and continue its progressive discussions with people and skills as an ongoing ‘anchor’.

ABI publishes plan to tackle insurance costs

The Association of British Insurers has published a 10-step roadmap intended to tackle rising insurance costs for drivers.

This comes after the EY reported that for every £1 paid in premiums last year, insurers incurred £1.14 in claims and expenses.

As part of the 10-step roadmap, the ABI will focus on greater transparency around insurance costs to support better customer decision-making. It will also try to mitigate the rising costs of vehicle thefts by working with the police to aid in the recovery of stolen vehicles.

The plan also calls for greater action around insurance fraud, improving road safety and infrastructure, and providing additional support for new drivers.

Further, the ABI will seek to reduce the impact of the Personal Injury Discount Rate (PIDR), while continuing with reforms to reform whiplash claims, advocating safety-focused vehicle technology, and continue to lobby for lower Insurance Premium Tax (IPT).

In addition, it aims to support the vehicle repair sector by working with government, manufacturers and repairers to create more volume and flexibility in the sector.

Mervyn Skeet, Director of General Insurance Policy said, We know that insurance costs are putting strain on household finances, so we’ve been working hard to find solutions. Some of these actions we can do quickly, others will require time or assistance from the regulator or government.

“Regardless, we will continue to do what we can under our new strategy to help consumers access the products that are integral to financial wellbeing and play a key role in the nation’s financial resilience.”

Trend Tracker’s latest monthly update has revealed that repair cost increases are still higher than inflation, but the rate of increase has slowed to six per cent year-on-year.

Cycle times are reducing although lead times are longer than this time last year, while repair volumes in January were four per cent higher than January 2023.

BASF signs sustainability partnership with INEOS

BASF’s Coatings Division has signed a strategic agreement with INEOS Automotive to develop sustainable vehicle body repair and paint refinish solutions. The partnership also incorporates product supply, shared expertise and training.

New data sees EV myths go up in smoke

Salary sacrifice specialist Tusker has analysed data from its fleet of more than 30,000 electric vehicles and found that they are 20 times less likely than petrol or diesel cars to catch fire.

EV training on the charge

New analysis from the IMI has found that 22% of technicians, or 55,000, are now EV qualified.

This is higher than anticipated, and the IMI has now revised its projection of when the industry will experience a skills gap in this area from 2029 to 2032.

Lloyds sets £450m aside for FCA investigation

Banking giant Lloyds has set aside £450m to cover the potential cost of an FCA investigation into car finance deals.

The FCA launched an investigation last month into whether car buyers overpaid as a result of high interest rates, which could have been set to raise commissions for brokers.

New regulations from the Equality and Human Rights Commission means employers are now legally obligated to support colleagues going through the menopause.

Stellantis to begin EV production in Luton

Stellantis will manufacture all-electric vans at its Luton site from the middle of next year. It will produce the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, Peugeot E-Expert, Citroën ë-Dispatch and Fiat E-Scudo, becoming the second Stellantis UK site producing EVs after Ellesmere Port.

Volkswagen and Mahindra enhance EV agreement

Volkswagen Group has signed a supply agreement on components of its MEB for Mahindra’s purpose-built electric platform INGLO.

The deal, which also includes the supply of electric parts, underpins the two companies e-mobility collaboration.

Ford unveils new propulsion centre

Ford has unveiled its new £24m Propulsion Development Laboratory at its Essex-based UK headquarters. 

Situated at the Dunton Campus’ research and development centre, the site comprises eight vehicle-size rooms capable of testing electric power units and propulsion systems

Porsche adds E-Hybrid variants

Porsche is expanding its Panamera model range with the 4 E-Hybrid and 4S E-Hybrid variants, offering 59 miles electric range.

Volvo standardises EV names

Volvo Cars is renaming and standardising its fully electric cars. The XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models are renamed to EX40 and EC40 respectively to align with its other models, the EX30, EX90 and EM90.

Industry interview: Adrian Furness, Managing Director, Motor Repair, Activate Group

Adrian Furness has a unique perspective on the challenges facing automotive claims, having worked on both sides of the sector.

Here, he shares his views on the key issues impacting the industry and explains how Activate Group helps to overcome them through its expanding portfolio of services.

Tell us about your business.

I’ve recently joined Activate Group, an accident management specialist that handles hundreds of thousands of claims every year. We support fleets through sopp+sopp, and handle insurance claims through Motor Repair Network.

We have our own chain of repair centres – Activate Accident Repair – that works alongside an approved nationwide repair network. We also have a specialist parts division called Activate Parts.

I’ve joined the business at a very exciting time because we recently announced a new investment deal with a private equity firm, Elysian Capital. This gives us the opportunity to accelerate our growth strategy so we can really be a transformational leader in the industry.

What are the challenges are facing your business right now, and how are you working to overcome them?

Since joining Activate Group, I’ve made it a priority to spend time with insurers and MGAs to understand more about their challenges, and how we can support them. Activate Group has a lot to offer in a very competitive market; my priority is to make the best use of our core capabilities to solve problems for our partners.

In the wider industry, repair capacity has been a challenge, which is why we’ve invested in our own Activate Accident Repair centres. We have nine sites now, with another set to open in March.

The sites are in areas where demand is highest and complement the footprint of our existing repair network. They’re purpose-built and equipped with the very best technology, giving us additional control over capacity so we can deliver for our customers.

Parts supply has also been a big challenge for the industry. It’s starting to ease, but it’s still far more of a challenge than it was four or five years ago.

Our parts supply division, Activate Parts, is in a unique position to support customers with parts sourcing, data, and strategy. As an ex-insurer, my eyes lit up when I heard Activate Group had in-house parts capability. It’s an area of the business with real growth potential.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Don’t change who you are, just be the best version of you.”

It can be tempting to try to emulate other successful leaders, or present a false image to impress other people. It sounds a bit corny, but the best piece of advice I’ve ever had is to be yourself. When you’re representing a business, you want to build trust. You can only do that by being open and honest – people can tell if you’re not being yourself.

In the claims industry I’ve found that building business relationships is particularly important for long-term success, and I think trust is at the heart of that.

What would be your prediction for the industry in the next year?

Some of the challenges I’ve already mentioned are easing, but I don’t expect them to go away completely. Repair capacity is coming back into the market, partly thanks to significant investment from companies like ours. There is still a shortage of skilled technicians, and as an industry we must maintain our commitment to apprenticeships.

We’re also looking at other solutions, including bringing in skilled overseas talent to ensure we have the right capability in place to support our customers.

Consumer Duty will also have a significant impact on the insurance industry over the next year.

Market forces are pushing up costs, and insurance premiums are increasing as a result. In general, policyholders aren’t always aware of these industry-specific challenges, so it’s down to insurers and their supply partners to demonstrate value for money.

We’ll support our customers in this by delivering an excellent claims service, with quick and efficient repairs and great communication throughout.

How would you like to see the insurance industry change by the time you retire – what is next for your business?

I’d like to see us build greater trust with our policyholders, by placing the customer at the forefront of our decisions. When we develop technology, let’s do it with the customer in mind. When we make investment decisions, let’s consider how it benefits our clients.

We’ve talked about this for a long time as an industry, but in reality it has often been deprioritised.

I firmly believe that delivering great service leads to profitability, and I have high hopes that the new consumer duty regulations will have a positive long-term impact on our industry.

Monthly Key Metrics – February 2024

As these headline metric show, keeping informed about how the vehicle repair market is evolving remains critical.

Throughout 2023 we saw rapid and significant increases in repair costs – largely driven by inflation (particularly energy costs) – which led to large scale increases in motor insurance premiums (Confused.com claim 58% increase in last year).

Keeping informed on key metrics became and remains important.

Repair costs (eg labour, paint, parts combined) continue to climb higher than the current rate of annual inflation (CPI 4.2%) but have slowed from the double figure increases seen in 2023 to a six per cent increase year-on-year currently. This was consistent in December and January suggesting this is starting to find a new level. Within this, the largest increase year-on-year was in labour – influenced by sharp rising energy costs.

Cycle time has started to reduce, which seems to be largely due to key-to-key (K2K) which has fallen. Lead times are longer than this time last year. This suggests the ‘new normal’ method of collecting images and information prior to bringing the vehicle in and pre-ordering parts to ensure everything is in place to reduce K2K/off-road time, has created greater bodyshop efficiencies whilst customers might need to wait a little longer for their vehicle to be repaired.

Finally, repair volumes bounced back in January after a quiet (short) December, showing a four percent increase Vs the same period in 2023. This brings the repair volumes almost in line with those seen prior to the covid pandemic.

The Dawning of a New Era

Lotus is a name synonymous with performance sports cars. From a rich heritage in Formula 1 to appearances on the ‘big screen’, Lotus has been at the cutting edge of vehicle innovation for 75 years.

The business is now transforming itself as part of its Vision80 plan, which will not only see it become one of the first all-electric vehicle (EV) performance car manufacturers, but also offering luxury tech-focused lifestyle vehicles and increasing its global presence.

Here, we catch up with Steve Plunkett, Lotus Cars’ Global Bodyshop Programme Manager, to find out how the business is getting set to satisfy insurer and customer requirements across the world.

Adapting to the ADAS age

ARC360 partnered with Repairify recently to host a roundtable event, focused on the growing influence and subsequent challenges and opportunities around advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

The roundtable saw experts from all corners of the sector meet at The Midland Grand Dining Room, London to consider the impact ADAS is having on the industry, both from a repairer and insurance perspective.

Copart announces Peterlee expansion

Online vehicle remarketing and recycling specialist Copart is expanding its Operation Centre in Peterlee, County Durham.

The expansion will increase the site to 30 acres with a capacity for handling upwards of 38,000 vehicles a year.

Thatcham Research unveils AiQ data platform

Thatcham Research has unveiled its new automotive intelligence platform, AiQ, which will deliver relevant, timely and data rich insurability content to members.

Content includes research on new vehicles, car parc composition and aggregated repair costs.

Government calls for urgent EV roadmap

A new government report on electric vehicles has called for ‘urgent changes’ if the UK is to meet its net zero emissions targets.

Published by the House of Lords Committee, the Environment and Climate Change Committee’s EV strategy: rapid recharge needed report highlighted that barriers still exist around cost and public charging.

NWVA scores with West Ham United

Nationwide Vehicle Assistance has recorded a promotional video with stars of the West Ham United FC first team.

The video is hosted by The Apprentice star Tom Skinner, who asks the three players a series of questions while they safely strap a vehicle to one of NWVA’s recovery trucks.

SYNETIQ underlines sustainability credentials

SYNETIQ has been awarded Gold Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) status from the Carbon Literacy Project.

Gold status recognises that more than 50% of colleagues have completed industry-specific Carbon Literacy training and are certified as Carbon Literate.

It has also announced a new partnership with clean technology group Altilium to recycle EV batteries from cars that have been written off.

Consolidation continues within National Windscreens

National Windscreens’ largest member Cary Group has completed the acquisition of the second largest member, J Huggins and Son. This consolidates 95% of National Windscreens’ fitting and calibration centres.

IMI campaign breaks five-million barrier

An IMI campaign to promote the industry has achieved more than five million impressions and 35,000 conversions in just three months.

The More to Motor digital campaign was launched across multiple platforms in September last year.

Cogent Hire joins NBRA supplier list

The NBRA has announced that Chorley-based credit hire company Cogent Hire has joined its supplier list as a non-fault partner and EV mobility specialist.

Silverlake opens the door for Steer apprentices

Silverlake Automotive Recycling is supporting Steer Automotive apprentices by supplying reclaimed door panels to help their continued training and development.

Online car marketplace Carwow has acquired automotive media company Autovia, which reaches over 15 million car owners, buyers and enthusiasts every month through its print and digital titles.

HGVs gather momentum

Demand for new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) grew for the second year running with UK registrations up 13.5% to 46,227 in 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Meanwhile, the new bus, coach and minibus market grew by 44.6% to 4,932.

EVs drive Stellantis growth

Stellanis has reported that across the group battery electric vehicle sales grew 21% last year, while light electric vehicle sales increased by 27%. To drive further growth, it plans to launch 18 new BEVs in North America this year.

Meanwhile, CEO Carlos Tavares has warned that cutting EV prices regardless of the reality of costs could lead to a race to the bottom and result in an industry ‘bloodbath’.

Addison Lee accelerates EV switch with VWG

London private hire and taxi firm Addison Lee has added 600 new Volkswagen Multivan hybrid vehicles to its fleet, which already includes more than 1,000 all-electric Volkswagen ID.4’s, and 400 Audi A6 low-emission vehicles.

The Multivans will replace diesel people carriers.

GM expands Super Cruise network

GM has added thousands of LiDAR-mapped highways to its Super Cruise road network in North America.

GM Super Cruise is ‘the first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads’. Drivers can now benefit from the ADAS technology on more than 750,000 miles across America and Canada.

JLR invites new apprentices

JLR has increased its 2024 apprenticeship intake by 50, meaning there are 350 places available this year.

Candidates with A-level maths, BTEC and T-Level qualifications are now being invited to apply.

Bright future for Porsche Panamera

Porsche has unveiled a new colour programme for its Panamera saloon, including blue metallic, ice grey metallic, Lugano blue and Madeira gold metallic.

HGVs gather momentum

Demand for new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) grew for the second year running with UK registrations up 13.5% in 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

A further 46,227 HGVs joined UK roads last year, making 2023 the best year since 2019.

Meanwhile, electric and hydrogen registrations were up by 265.6% to 234 units.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “Two years of growing demand for the very latest, fuel efficient trucks amid testing times reflects these vehicles’ importance to the British economy – and with some HGVs facing the same 2035 end of sale date as cars and vans, the sector is also critical to our green goals. Increasing availability of electric and hydrogen models – and record demand for them – is encouraging market growth but operators need cast-iron confidence to switch. More than ever, government must compel truck infrastructure rollout and provide a signal that the time to invest is now.”

The SMMT also reported that the new bus, coach and minibus market grew by 44.6% to 4,932.

The Dawning of a New Era 

Lotus is a name synonymous with performance sports cars. From a rich heritage in Formula 1 to appearances on the ‘big screen’, Lotus has been at the cutting edge of vehicle innovation for 75 years. 

The business is now transforming itself as part of its Vision80 plan, which will not only see it become one of the first all-electric vehicle (EV) performance car manufacturers, but also offering luxury tech-focused lifestyle vehicles and increasing its global presence. 

Here, we catch up with Steve Plunkett, Lotus Cars’ Global Bodyshop Programme Manager, to find out how the business is getting set to satisfy insurer and customer requirements across the world. 

Seven Formula 1 constructor’s titles and six driver’s titles, starring roles in movies including James Bond – The Spy Who Loved Me, Basic Instinct and Pretty Woman, and development of an Olympic gold medal-winning bike is quite a list of achievements. But in 2017 when Geely Holding Group acquired a 51% stake in Group Lotus it was clear there were many more developments ahead. 

Since 2019, the business has introduced four award-winning vehicles: the Evija – its first, all-electric British hypercar; followed in 2020 by the Emira – its last petrol engine car; and a year later by the Eletre – not only the company’s first hyper-SUV but also electric powered too. And in 2023 came the world premiere of the electric Emeya – the company’s first, four door hyper-GT. 

Intelligent 

It’s clear the move from internal combustion engine (ICE) to intelligent battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is well underway but so too is the global footprint, with China now a key market alongside the well-established UK, EU and US. And with that comes the move from niche sports cars to luxury lifestyle vehicles. Over the next few years a smaller SUV and an EV sports car are pencilled in for launch. 

Steve explained, “Lotus’ plans are hugely ambitious, combining our world-renowned success from the racetrack with performance-oriented lifestyle EVs that are desired by customers today, featuring innovative and cutting edge technologies and outstanding design.” 

He continued, “We’ve already invested over £100m here in Hethel, UK [Lotus Cars Limited headquarters] and we’re going beyond the UK, EU and US where we’ve been strong in the past to now having a global market presence including Asia Pacific region – where we are too investing heavily.  

“It truly is an exciting time to be involved with the brand.” 

Engineering 

The engineering processes of the latest models, specifically the Eletre and Emeya, have also moved on significantly, now incorporating aluminium, High Strength Steel (HSS) and, most notably, Boron steel – effectively providing a safety cage for occupants. Aluminium makes up the majority of the exterior body panels. In repair this requires new repair processes including advanced bonding and joining techniques. 

All of this change is a clear indicator of the need for Lotus to turn its attentions to its bodyshop network and ensure the standards of manufacture and brand customer experience are met within the aftermarket. This translates into a 120-line standards programme across 11 categories – a stringent process, requiring some serious investment that is not for the masses. 

“These cars need to be repaired in the approved network because they are very complex vehicles,” explained Steve. “We’re a unique brand so we need to ensure our customers, people and vehicles are treated in the Lotus way.” 

Network 

Those network bodyshops are focused on providing Lotus customers with the ‘brand experience’. “We all know that when a customer has an accident they are distressed, and the network gives us the greatest possible chance to make it right,” said Steve.  

“With the volume of models and sales planned in the coming years, the Lotus bodyshop programme is destined to go from strength to strength. I’m delighted to have made such progress already and secured some of the UK’s leading repairers in to the network who also share our vision.”  

Today, the UK network comprises of 12 Lotus agent-nominated bodyshops and two factory centres. These are supported by a host of exclusive benefits including the Lotus Total Loss Avoidance (TLA) programme which promises to optimise opportunities where possible and provide speedy, same day response. Meanwhile, the First Notification Of Loss (FNOL) process is getting ready for launch via Lotus Cars Car Insurance and Lotus Cars Accident Assistance. 

Within the network to date are the likes of Steer Prestige, Farnham (South); Coventry-based repairer XL Motors; and Individual Specialist Cars based in Birmingham.  

Darren Doubtfire, Divisional Director at Steer Prestige, said, “We are really proud to be able to continue our long association with Lotus, we have been working with the team at Lotus Surrey for a long time and have developed a very good working relationship. It’s a very exciting time to be working with the brand and we are delighted to be one of the 14 Lotus approved bodyshops on the new Lotus bodyshop programme – 2024 promises to be a very exciting year for us all.” 

Rob Ally, Managing Director of XL Motors said, “We are delighted to receive Lotus approval. Receiving this approval is testament to the team’s dynamic commitment to a prestigious brand vision. I’d like to thank Steve for his support throughout the approval process.” 

Development 

With all eyes from across Lotus territories on the UK’s network development, Steve will be putting his global sector knowledge to the test in the future by replicating the model around the world, but first off his priority list is to ensure that the UK market is ready. 

“The plan from the outset was to launch the programme in the UK first. What is very clear is that Lotus is really backing and investing in this project, globally evidenced by the fact this is the first time the business has directly employed a Global Bodyshop Programme Manager,” said Steve, “It really is a great opportunity to create something very special.”

Copart announces Peterlee expansion

Online vehicle remarketing and recycling specialist is expanding its Operation Centre in Peterlee, County Durham.

The expansion will increase the site to 30 acres with a capacity for handling upwards of 38,000 vehicles a year.

It will also include enlarged areas for vehicles that may require specialist handling like EVs, HEVs, and flood and fire damaged vehicles, while new vehicle preparation and valeting areas using state-of-the-art technology to inspect and image vehicles are also being planned.

Jane Pocock, CEO of Copart UK & Ireland, said: “This expansion at Peterlee will enable us to handle around 38,000 vehicles per annum, supporting Copart’s continued growth and industry leading services in the Northeast alongside our Operation Centres in Sandtoft and York.

“The additional storage capacity will enable us to offer unique contingency land to our customers following extreme weather events and support further the national growth of our onsite Contact Centre which provides vital first response and policy holder management services.”

Industry News

EU considers limiting repairs to old cars

A number of news sources have reported that the European Union is considering restricting repairs to cars over 15 years old as part of a plan to phase out older, more polluting vehicles.

The proposal, which has not been ratified, would form part of the Fit for 55 initiative, which aims to reduce net emissions by 55% by 2030.

It’s understood that older vehicles with significant damage to engines, transmissions, brakes or steering would fall under a ‘residual vehicle’ category, which would bar them from repair.

Industry targets new talent during National Apprenticeship Week

The automotive industry has rallied to support National Apprenticeship Week, with businesses from all sectors promoting the sector to the next generation through a range of initiatives and events.

At the Nottingham College Apprenticeship evening, both Michael Golding, Network Manager at LV, and Managing Director of Gemini Accident Repair Centres Dave Sargeant were on the AutoRaise stand discussing automotive career opportunities to students and parents.

Elsewhere, Autocraft Group apprentices are on respected manufacturer programmes such as Volvo and VWG, Steer Automotive Group has recently unveiled its first ever Apprentice Skills Competition, which will continue throughout February, while The Vella Group has recognised the 29 apprentices on its books.

EY forecasts further growth for UK automotive

EY UK is predicting another strong year of growth in the new car market, after the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that sales grew a further 8.2% in January to 142,876 registrations.

David Borland, EY UK & Ireland Automotive Leader, said, “While the new year will undoubtedly present economic and regulatory challenges, the market is showing robust momentum as it heads into 2024 with further volume increases forecast for the year.

Repairify offer proves a huge hit

Repairify’s offer of free remote services for three months has saved bodyshops thousands of pounds since it was announced at the end of December, with hundreds of free jobs already undertaken.

The offer was introduced to support repairers amidst rising operational costs.

Sustainability a key focus for 2024

Solera APAC Managing Director Chris Iacovou has highlighted the key challenges facing the sector this year.

Talking to Digital Nation alongside other industry leaders, he said consumer demand and regulatory pressure would ramp up the focus on sustainability. Other issues addressed included enhanced cyber security, ethical use of AI, and digital skills.

TGSS formed after management buyout

Key figures in the sector have come together to launch telematics solutions provider Trak Global Security Solutions (TGSS).

TGSS has been created following a management buyout of the IMS stolen vehicle recovery division by former commercial director Dave Turnock and entrepreneur Andy Christopher.

Dave Shepherd has been appointed Chairman, while Alan Cottrill and Mark Ward have joined as non-executive directors.

Pricing tool dedicated to dealers released

cap hpi had developed a new tool to support dealers price optional extras on used vehicles. Its Options Value tool is available free to subscribers in the Valuation Anywhere product.

Silverlake supports Ukraine with first aid kits

Silverlake is partnering with charity UK Sunflower Aid to support refugees in Ukraine.

It is sending recycled vehicle first aid kits to the country as well as fuelling all the vans needed to transport them there.

To date it has collected and shipped over 1,500 first aid kits from its Sheffield site.

Strong start to 2024 for car sales

New car registrations grew for the 18th month in a row in January, rising 8.2% to 142,876 units.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders also reported that the month saw the one millionth electric vehicle sold in the UK, with 20,935 BEVs registered, a rise of 21%, taking the overall total since records began to 1,001,677.

SYNETIQ set for BTCC grid

SYNETIQ has entered a new team to compete in the British Touring Cars Championship.

Called ‘LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ,’ the team will consist of two additional cars racing alongside the Toyota Gazoo Racing UK effort under the Speedworks banner, with two-time Independents’ laurel winner Josh Cook confirmed as one of the drivers.

Used car sales enjoy robust sales year

More than seven million used cars were sold in the UK last year as the market increased by 5.1%, or 351,915 units, from 2022.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) also reported that used EV sales nearly doubled through the year, rising by 90.9% to a record 118,973.

A year in review

Research carried out by sopp+sopp has found that 41% of bodyshops said staffing was among their biggest challenges last year.

It also found that repair times had risen to an average of 42 days on average by September, while 40% of repairers said that delays in parts sourcing had impacted one in five jobs.

GLASS provides transparency

BASF has unveiled a new tool which enables businesses to measure the carbon footprint and associated costs of their paintshops.

GLASS, which stands for Global Life Cycle Assessment of Automotive Surface Solutions, covers the entire value chain from raw material extraction via pre-treatment to clearcoat as the final step of the coating process, enabling customers to optimise costs and performance, and ecological footprint. 

Thatcham Research renews call for EV battery collaboration

Thatcham Research has welcomed the House of Lords report, ‘EV strategy: rapid recharge needed,’ which has called for “the introduction of a cross-industry battery health testing standard… to provide clarity around the condition of an old or damaged battery.”

Thatcham Research has now renewed calls for the industry to work together to reduce the cost of battery repair or replacement.

A1 ADAS Solutions set for ADAS growth

A1 ADAS Solutions is gearing up for further growth in mobile ADAS calibration, diagnostics, and programming, after demand for services from its fully-equipped fleet of vans rose substantially last year.

Iain Molloy, Managing Director, said, “By 2030 it’s also estimated 44% of cars will have level 2 autonomy. This makes ADAS is a real growth area, not just for us, but for our bodyshop customers too.”

EV skills in the spotlight

Thatcham Research Chief Executive Jonathan Hewett had addressed the role of insurers in supporting the EV switch.
