Fix franchisee to open second site

Fix Auto Tewkesbury owner Kevin Dunlop is on his way to becoming a multi-site operator after receiving the keys to a new 55,000 sqft facility that will operate as Fix Auto Hereford.

A former packaging distribution centre, the site is now being transformed into a fully-equipped 11-bay bodyshop repairing upwards of 40 cars a month.

The new site will be managed by Assistant Manager at Fix Auto Tewkesbury Nathan Cooper, who will lead a team of five operatives.

Kevin said, “When I joined Fix Auto UK in February last year, I stated I was ambitious and wanted to develop a second and possibly third site and here I am with the keys to a second building exactly one year on. To say it’s exciting is an understatement.”

Mark Hutchins, Operations Director for Fix Auto UK, added: “It’s extremely fulfilling to see a new franchise partner flourish. Prior to joining us Kevin had built up an unviable reputation for delivering first class repairs and a first-class service since starting his business in 2015. Just like so many before him, he just needed that crucial business support and guidance we’re able to provide to help him fulfil his ambitions.”

Trend Tracker publishes Monthly Key Metrics

Trend Tracker’s latest monthly report on the status of the UK vehicle incident repair market has revealed that repair costs rose six per cent between February 2023 and 2024.

Its latest Monthly Key Metrics report also found that key-to-key times were 30% down over the same 12-month period, while cycle and lead times were down 14% and two per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, volumes were up by four per cent.

Director Paul Sell said, “Repair costs continue to climb higher than the current rate of annual inflation but have slowed from the double figure increases seen in 2023 to six per cent year-on-year now. This has been consistent across the last three months suggesting this is starting to find a new level.

“Cycle time and critically lead times have started to fall, with key-to-key much lower than this time last year suggesting the ‘new normal’ method of collecting images and information prior to bringing the vehicle in, to pre-order parts to ensure everything is in place, to reduce key-to-key has become the new normal practise, delivering greater efficiency in the workshop.

Finally repair volumes fell in February compared to January, predictably, but remain four per cent higher than equivalent month in 2023, this has been consistent in 2024 so far.

New data reveals growing appetite for sustainable repair options

Solera, a global leader in vehicle lifecycle management and claims, has announced the results of a new study surveying over 8,000 drivers across Europe which reveals the industry isn’t matching customers’ appetite for green vehicle repair options.

Less than a quarter (23%) of European drivers have heard from their auto insurer about sustainable policy options and when their vehicle was repaired, less than a third (32%) were offered the choice between new or used parts. This is despite over half of drivers (53%) saying they are genuinely concerned about the environmental impact of vehicle repairs and maintenance – rising to 66% of those in Spain and 65% in France.

The research also reveals garages that can offer sustainable repair options stand to gain customers and retain loyal ones. In fact, 59% of drivers said if they needed a repair, they would be more likely to opt for a garage that offered a sustainable repair option, 58% would return and the same number would recommend them to friends or family.

Jing Liao, Solera’s Chief Administration Officer said: “The eco-conscious driver is here to stay, presenting a clear opportunity for businesses in this sector to step up. Drivers across Europe are telling us they prefer dealing with a garage or bodyshop that adopts a more sustainable approach. It’s time for the sector to take sustainability seriously, or risk not only losing loyal or new customers, but also the chance to spearhead a sustainable revolution.”

The study also reveals widespread consumer misconceptions around sustainable repair options. Although including used car parts is one of the best ways to provide more eco-friendly repairs and maintenance, 40% of drivers believe that if they were offered used parts by their garage it would be to allow the garage to save money on the repair, rather than for sustainability reasons.

However, many also expect to pay a premium. Nearly half (45%) of drivers assume green or sustainable vehicle repairs will cost more, rising to 56% in Spain.

Arnaud Agostini, International Managing Director at Solera, added: “Insurers and garages can play a vital role in helping customers understand the green options available, and by doing so, can help themselves attract more business. The latest data and technology are putting this intelligence at technicians’ fingertips, helping them choose the best repair option for every vehicle, every time.

“The good news for the insurer is that green parts will help them reduce both the cost of a claim and the carbon emission footprint at the same time.”

To meet the challenges insurers and bodyshops face, Solera has launched an industry-first product, ‘Sustainable Estimatics’. This tool enables insurers to measure and use data to offset the carbon emissions (CO2e) tied to their claims process. This is achieved by monitoring and measuring the end-to-end claims journey, offering insurers actionable insights such as recommending car part repairs instead of replacements to reduce CO2 emissions. The tool is being rolled out across 2024 and helping to reduce scope three emissions.

Steer acquires six IRG sites

Steer Automotive Group has expanded its operational footprint with the acquisition of six IRG sites. Established in 1999, IRG has built a reputation as a leading independent network of automotive repair centres.

The acquired sites are located in Wales (Whitland, Swansea, and Pontypridd) and England (Bristol, Birmingham, and Wolverhampton), representing a further step forward in Steer’s strategic UK growth plans. This expansion extends Steer’s geographical reach and aligns with the service offerings of the two businesses, with existing leading manufacturer approvals for JLR, BMW, Tesla and VW Group.

Joe Moore, a current shareholder of IRG, will support the business during the integration period, ensuring a seamless handover and continued excellence in service delivery. His expertise, alongside the dedication of regional managers transitioning to Steer, will drive forward the operational success of these new locations.

The IRG Board of Directors said, “Choosing Steer Automotive Group as the new owners for these six sites wasn’t just a strategic decision but a personal one. We’ve built a legacy based on commitment, quality, and community. Richard and his team at Steer not only recognised this legacy but also shared our values, ensuring that our customers, staff, and the business’s ethos are in capable and caring hands. Their approach throughout has been nothing short of professional and empathetic, making this transition as smooth as possible. I am confident that under Steer’s leadership, these sites are set for a bright future, and I eagerly anticipate their continued success and growth.”

This acquisition broadens Steer’s network, as it opens new geographical catchment areas in South Wales, addressing the demand from the Group’s existing clients for coverage in both Swansea and Cardiff regions, where Steer previously had no network capacity. The addition of smaller sites in Wolverhampton and Birmingham introduces a hub model to Steer’s operations, enabling enhanced efficiency and optimised volume in the central region.

“This expansion is a testament to our commitment to meeting the needs of our clients and providing unparalleled access to high-quality vehicle repair services across the UK. We are thrilled to welcome the talented teams from these IRG sites into the Steer family and look forward to the opportunities this acquisition presents for enhancing our service offerings and operational efficiencies,” said Richard Steer, Chief Executive.

ARC360 introduces inaugural Breakfast Think Tank

ARC360’s first online Breakfast Think Tank took place recently, when more than 20 leading figures from the across the vehicle incident repair sector met to share their views on the year ahead.

The session featured contributions from a panel of experts from vehicle repair, vehicle manufacturing, insurance, training and mobility.

The Think Tank invited the panel to share their thoughts on what lies ahead in 2024, and the overwhelming immediate concern was the continued challenge around people and skills across the sector.

With the average age of technicians in their late 40s, it was suggested that the industry had to ‘get serious’ about raising awareness to younger people and other potential candidates outside of the sector of the fulfilling and varied career paths available within automotive repair.

Attracting the next generation of talent has to be a priority for all stakeholders, it was agreed, with a far more collaborative and targeted approach instead of individual businesses operating in siloes.

“We’re not bringing people in from outside the industry,” said one panellist. “We’re all vying for the same candidates and just taking skills off each other. Every sector is facing a similar challenge, but we need to start competing with other industries rather than each other.”

It was also suggested that greater support for independents was needed, with some reluctant to take on apprentices due to limited time, financial resource and unclear futures ie exit Vs investment. There is also a ‘fear’ among many that their efforts will be wasted with apprentices either dropping out or taking their skills to a higher-paying competitor.

However, a lack of new talent entering the sector is only one part of the puzzle. There is the additional and arguably more immediate challenge in meeting existing demands and productivity levels with a limited pool of skilled resource.

“Apprenticeships are obviously crucial going forward,” said one panellist, “but they won’t address the skills challenges we face now and in the next two or three years.”

The next Breakfast Think Tank will take place in March and continue its progressive discussions with people and skills as an ongoing ‘anchor’.
