  • Steer Group has hosted its final repair and refinishing Apprentice Skills competition at EMTEC Colleges and 3M. The competition was introduced to raise standards, boost confidence, hone problem-solving abilities, and enhance planning and time management skills.
  • Motofix Accident Repair Centres has opened its first, dedicated Motofix Prestige Paint and Body Centre in Cirencester, following a £2.5m investment.
  • Basingstoke-based R&R Autos Bodyshop has secured Carbon Neutral PAS2060 accreditation, thanks to the support of ECA Business Energy. 
  • L&I Eaton ARC has opened new sites in Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle, and Aberdeen Central, with Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield all securing the latest BS10125:2022 standards. The Aberdeen site is working towards the standard.
  • SMART Bodyshop Solutions has opened its seventh location. The new 20,000 sqft site is based in Hereford.
  • The Vella Group hosted students from Manchester Young Lives at its Trafford Park site recently, raising awareness of the career options within the industry. It has now offered one student a work placement.
  • Southside ARC has achieved carbon neutral PAS-2060 certification.
  • Komoo has cut the ribbon on its 13th site. Based in Huddersfield, the site will be managed by Cheryl Craven. Further sites are expected to be opened this year.
  • Crash Care Centre Hitchin has secured BS10125 certification.

ARC360 introduces inaugural breakfast Think Tank

ARC360’s first online Breakfast Think Tank took place recently, when more than 20 leading figures from across the vehicle incident repair sector met to share their views on the year ahead.

The Think Tank invited the panel to share their thoughts on what lies ahead in 2024, and the overwhelming immediate concern was the continued challenge around people and skills across the sector.

ARC360 set to explore future technology impacts and solutions

Following up on last year’s highly acclaimed specialist electric vehicle (EV) event, ARC360 is back on Thursday 27 June to further explore just how technology is shaping the future of the industry. 

The event, which takes place on Thursday 27 June at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry will canvass insights from across the sector and beyond in a bid to explore how the motor claims repair sector is transitioning towards a high-tech future, seeking insights from across the sector and beyond. 

ABI publishes plan to tackle insurance costs

The Association of British Insurers has published a 10-step roadmap intended to tackle rising insurance costs for drivers.

As part of the 10-step roadmap, the ABI will focus on greater transparency around insurance costs to support better customer decision-making. It will also try to mitigate the rising costs of vehicle thefts by working with the police to aid in the recovery of stolen vehicles.

Cap hpi predicts continued growth

Cap hpi’s latest car market overview has reported a strong start to 2024, with car sales up eight per cent in January to 142,876 units. Used car demand was also strong in both January and February, with values rising slightly in February for the first time in a year.

It is predicting continued growth through March.

HORIBA MIRA joins Euro NCAP network

Euro NCAP has welcomed HORIBA MIRA to its network of safety and assessment centres.

Expanded accreditation means the HORIBA MIRA laboratory is now recognised as an official site for active safety system testing on passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. 

ABI to publish AI governance guide

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is working with experts to produce a guide to responsible AI innovation.

Focused on consumer outcomes, the first sector-specific guide will set out how insurers and those in the long-term savings industry can work within the UK government’s five principles around accountability, transparency, fairness, safety, contestability and redress.

Join the team for Plunky’s All Stars last game

The last ever Plunky’s All Stars charity football match will kick-off at the Football Development Centre in Norwich at 6.30pm on 28 June.

The match is being held to raise awareness around mental health after fireman Carl Mills took his own life two years ago.

Ben makes great progress with Race Across Britain

Ben’s new fundraising challenge, Race Across Britain, has raised more than £100,000 for the automotive charity.

The LKQ-sponsored challenge took place from 26-28 February and saw 27 teams of two complete the 1,300-mile journey without smart phones and limited by a strict budget.

WorldSkills open for entries

WorldSkills is inviting entries for its 2024 National Competition.

Regional competitions will take place over the next seven months across 49 skills before the National Finals take place in Manchester from 18-22 November.

Volkswagen Group UK has signed an agreement with Ecobat tocollect and recycle EV batteries and battery materials from dealers, distributors, and end-of-life recycling centres.

Volvo launches new accident alert feature

Volvo has unveiled a new safety feature, Accident Ahead Alert, that warns drivers of accidents on the road in front of them by using real-time data from traffic management centres.

Stellantis sets date for Mobility Forum

Stellantis has announced that its second Freedom of Mobility Forum will take place on 3 April. The live online debate will feature five industry experts, addressing: “How will our planet accommodate the mobility needs of eight billion people?”

MG launches advanced hybrid supermini

MG has unveiled its new hybrid supermini, the MG3, which features advanced ADAS systems including Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Traffic Jam Assist.

Fisker reveals challenges and opportunities

Fisker’s latest financial report has revealed substantial ‘real world’ challenges around suppliers, interest rates and skills, and warns that additional investment will be crucial to secure its future.

However, it shifted to a dealer model at the end of 2023 and is hopeful of agreeing a deal with a large vehicle manufacturer that could include investment, joint development of EV platforms, and manufacturing.

Polestar secures substantial funding

Swedish EV manufacturer Polestar has secured £750m in additional funding. Investment was led by 12 leading international banks including BNP Paribas, Natixis, Standard Chartered, BBVA, HSBC and SPDB.

JLR ditches agency model plans

JLR is reported to have cancelled plans to move to an agency model and will refocus efforts on its franchised model.  

It had intended to move to a ‘direct to consumer’ model this year but has abandoned the plan due to ‘internal and external’ challenges.

MINI starts major production drive

BMW Group has announced that the first all-electric version of its MINI Countryman has rolled off factory lines at its Leipzig plant. It aims to produce 350,000 units each year.

UK production on the increase in 2024

UK car production began 2024 on the front foot with a 21% rise to 82,997 units in January.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), exports were up 11.6% to 62,938 units, while production for the domestic market soared by 64.5%, or 7,863 units.

Meanwhile, the production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles rose by a combined 4.5% to 29,590 units to account for 35.7% of overall output.

The SMMT also reported that UK commercial vehicle (CV) production grew by 26.9 to 11,756 units, marking the strongest January in 16 years.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “A positive start to the year for UK car production bodes well for the industry and the many thousands of livelihoods on which it depends. There can be no room for complacency, however, given economic headwinds and geopolitical tensions. There must be a relentless commitment to competitiveness, building on the significant recent investments into the sector. The forthcoming Budget is a chance for Government to do just that by introducing measures to boost UK automotive manufacturing, focused on energy, investment competitiveness and market demand.”

ARC360 introduces inaugural Breakfast Think Tank

ARC360’s first online Breakfast Think Tank took place recently, when more than 20 leading figures from the across the vehicle incident repair sector met to share their views on the year ahead.

The session featured contributions from a panel of experts from vehicle repair, vehicle manufacturing, insurance, training and mobility.

The Think Tank invited the panel to share their thoughts on what lies ahead in 2024, and the overwhelming immediate concern was the continued challenge around people and skills across the sector.

With the average age of technicians in their late 40s, it was suggested that the industry had to ‘get serious’ about raising awareness to younger people and other potential candidates outside of the sector of the fulfilling and varied career paths available within automotive repair.

Attracting the next generation of talent has to be a priority for all stakeholders, it was agreed, with a far more collaborative and targeted approach instead of individual businesses operating in siloes.

“We’re not bringing people in from outside the industry,” said one panellist. “We’re all vying for the same candidates and just taking skills off each other. Every sector is facing a similar challenge, but we need to start competing with other industries rather than each other.”

It was also suggested that greater support for independents was needed, with some reluctant to take on apprentices due to limited time, financial resource and unclear futures ie exit Vs investment. There is also a ‘fear’ among many that their efforts will be wasted with apprentices either dropping out or taking their skills to a higher-paying competitor.

However, a lack of new talent entering the sector is only one part of the puzzle. There is the additional and arguably more immediate challenge in meeting existing demands and productivity levels with a limited pool of skilled resource.

“Apprenticeships are obviously crucial going forward,” said one panellist, “but they won’t address the skills challenges we face now and in the next two or three years.”

The next Breakfast Think Tank will take place in March and continue its progressive discussions with people and skills as an ongoing ‘anchor’.

ABI to publish AI governance guide

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is working with experts to produce a guide to responsible AI innovation.

Focused on consumer outcomes, the first sector-specific guide will set out how insurers and those in the long-term savings industry can work within the UK government’s five principles around accountability, transparency, fairness, safety, contestability and redress.

The guide, which will be developed by the ABI’s AI Working Group, which includes experts across actuarial, data science, data protection, legal, regulation and compliance, will also support businesses in maximising the benefits of AI, including improved affordability, accessibility, and availability, while also mitigating against the risks of discrimination, bias and exclusion of consumers.

Its aim will be to help businesses develop a responsible AI strategy, be inclusive in their use of AI, use the technology ethically, and understand how to control AI rather than being controlled by it.

Charlotte Clark, Director of Regulation, Association of British Insurers, said: “Artificial intelligence presents new opportunities and risks. By setting out practical resources, questions our industry needs to consider, and regulatory requirements, we hope this guide will support firms in starting conversations about AI and get a clearer understanding of what the responsible use of AI looks like.

“We’re grateful to our members for sharing their experiences and expertise, which has been at the heart of the guide throughout its development. Close collaboration between business, government and regulators is key to being able to adapt and respond to this evolving technology and we look forward to continuing to work together as the AI landscape progresses.”

Trend Tracker’s latest monthly update has revealed that repair cost increases are still higher than inflation, but the rate of increase has slowed to six per cent year-on-year.

Cycle times are reducing although lead times are longer than this time last year, while repair volumes in January were four per cent higher than January 2023.

BASF signs sustainability partnership with INEOS

BASF’s Coatings Division has signed a strategic agreement with INEOS Automotive to develop sustainable vehicle body repair and paint refinish solutions. The partnership also incorporates product supply, shared expertise and training.

New data sees EV myths go up in smoke

Salary sacrifice specialist Tusker has analysed data from its fleet of more than 30,000 electric vehicles and found that they are 20 times less likely than petrol or diesel cars to catch fire.

EV training on the charge

New analysis from the IMI has found that 22% of technicians, or 55,000, are now EV qualified.

This is higher than anticipated, and the IMI has now revised its projection of when the industry will experience a skills gap in this area from 2029 to 2032.

It says that consumer incentives are not enough to secure a successful EV transition.

Lloyds sets £450m aside for FCA investigation

Banking giant Lloyds has set aside £450m to cover the potential cost of an FCA investigation into car finance deals.

The FCA launched an investigation last month into whether car buyers overpaid as a result of high interest rates, which could have been set to raise commissions for brokers.

Employers obligated to manage the menopause

New regulations from the Equality and Human Rights Commission means employers are now legally obligated to support colleagues going through the menopause.

The help organisations meet their obligations, automotive charity Ben offers four different training courses aimed at supporting both employers and employees.

NVIDIA develops the ‘simulated’ world

NVIDIA has unveiled Omniverse, which used AI and digital technology to enable its automotive partners to ‘build’ factories and ‘manufacture’ new vehicles in simulation before any physical development begins.

This enables them to test efficiencies and validate new solutions such as ADAS.

Stellantis to begin EV production in Luton

Stellantis will manufacture all-electric vans at its Luton site from the middle of next year. It will produce the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, Peugeot E-Expert, Citroën ë-Dispatch and Fiat E-Scudo, becoming the second Stellantis UK site producing EVs after Ellesmere Port.

Volkswagen and Mahindra enhance EV agreement

Volkswagen Group has signed a supply agreement on components of its MEB for Mahindra’s purpose-built electric platform INGLO.

The deal, which also includes the supply of electric parts, underpins the two companies e-mobility collaboration.

Ford unveils new propulsion centre

Ford has unveiled its new £24m Propulsion Development Laboratory at its Essex-based UK headquarters. 

Situated at the Dunton Campus’ research and development centre, the site comprises eight vehicle-size rooms capable of testing electric power units and propulsion systems

Porsche adds E-Hybrid variants

Porsche is expanding its Panamera model range with the 4 E-Hybrid and 4S E-Hybrid variants, offering 59 miles electric range.

Volvo standardises EV names

Volvo Cars is renaming and standardising its fully electric cars. The XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models are renamed to EX40 and EC40 respectively to align with its other models, the EX30, EX90 and EM90.

BASF signs sustainability partnership with INEOS

Monthly Key Metrics – February 2024

As these headline metric show, keeping informed about how the vehicle repair market is evolving remains critical.

Throughout 2023 we saw rapid and significant increases in repair costs – largely driven by inflation (particularly energy costs) – which led to large scale increases in motor insurance premiums (Confused.com claim 58% increase in last year).

Keeping informed on key metrics became and remains important.

Repair costs (eg labour, paint, parts combined) continue to climb higher than the current rate of annual inflation (CPI 4.2%) but have slowed from the double figure increases seen in 2023 to a six per cent increase year-on-year currently. This was consistent in December and January suggesting this is starting to find a new level. Within this, the largest increase year-on-year was in labour – influenced by sharp rising energy costs.

Cycle time has started to reduce, which seems to be largely due to key-to-key (K2K) which has fallen. Lead times are longer than this time last year. This suggests the ‘new normal’ method of collecting images and information prior to bringing the vehicle in and pre-ordering parts to ensure everything is in place to reduce K2K/off-road time, has created greater bodyshop efficiencies whilst customers might need to wait a little longer for their vehicle to be repaired.

Finally, repair volumes bounced back in January after a quiet (short) December, showing a four percent increase Vs the same period in 2023. This brings the repair volumes almost in line with those seen prior to the covid pandemic.

The business is now transforming itself as part of its Vision80 plan, which will not only see it become one of the first all-electric vehicle (EV) performance car manufacturers, but also offering luxury tech-focused lifestyle vehicles and increasing its global presence.

Here, we catch up with Steve Plunkett, Lotus Cars’ Global Bodyshop Programme Manager, to find out how the business is getting set to satisfy insurer and customer requirements across the world.

An IMI campaign to promote the industry has achieved more than five million impressions and 35,000 conversions in just three months.

HGVs gather momentum

Demand for new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) grew for the second year running with UK registrations up 13.5% to 46,227 in 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

EVs drive Stellantis growth

Stellanis has reported that across the group battery electric vehicle sales grew 21% last year, while light electric vehicle sales increased by 27%. To drive further growth, it plans to launch 18 new BEVs in North America this year.

Meanwhile, CEO Carlos Tavares has warned that cutting EV prices regardless of the reality of costs could lead to a race to the bottom and result in an industry ‘bloodbath’.

Addison Lee accelerates EV switch with VWG

London private hire and taxi firm Addison Lee has added 600 new Volkswagen Multivan hybrid vehicles to its fleet, which already includes more than 1,000 all-electric Volkswagen ID.4’s, and 400 Audi A6 low-emission vehicles.

The Multivans will replace diesel people carriers.

GM expands Super Cruise network

GM has added thousands of LiDAR-mapped highways to its Super Cruise road network in North America.

GM Super Cruise is ‘the first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads’. Drivers can now benefit from the ADAS technology on more than 750,000 miles across America and Canada.

JLR invites new apprentices

JLR has increased its 2024 apprenticeship intake by 50, meaning there are 350 places available this year.

Candidates with A-level maths, BTEC and T-Level qualifications are now being invited to apply.

Adapting to the ADAS age 

ARC360 partnered with Repairify recently to host a roundtable event, focused on the growing influence and subsequent challenges and opportunities around advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). 

Repairify, a US-based company now operating in more than 20 European countries, completes upwards of 16 million diagnostics annually, delivering advanced vehicle diagnostic and calibration technologies and support to help shops around the world service more vehicles, more efficiently, and with higher safety standards. 

The roundtable saw experts from all corners of the sector meet at The Midland Grand Dining Room, London to consider the impact ADAS is having on the industry, both from a repairer and insurance perspective.

What is ADAS? 

The first question is understanding exactly what ADAS is. To some degree, ADAS has been in vehicles since before 2008. Volumes have increased substantially since then, however, it is not always clear exactly what ADAS includes.  

In simple terms, ADAS includes any and all collision avoidance technologies, or any function where the vehicle takes direct action to assist the driver.  

Perhaps the biggest challenge now within the aftermarket is knowing what systems are included in what models, if they have been calibrated correctly following a repair, and, if not, whether those systems are providing correct information to the driver or vehicle. 

This issue is exacerbated because vehicle manufacturers can be ‘poor’ at sharing information with the aftermarket. With little information filtering downwards, its seldom obvious what systems are featured – let alone which are active at any one time. This can therefore immediately cause challenges around job triage and repair pricing. 

The scale of this problem can’t be overstated: according to Repairify about 75% of vehicles that go in for a repair will require some form of ADAS recalibration today. 

Background 

The Insurance Industry Requirements (IRR) was officially introduced in 2021 by Thatcham Research and motor insurers to ensure ADAS repairs were consistently carried out according to manufacturer specifications. 

At the same time, a review of the vehicle repair standard BS10125 was initiated with the updated version introduced in November 2022 to incorporate all the core requirements of IRR.  

Back in 2021 the NBRA also issued its document: Repair Industry Requirements in response to the IIR and with a view to outline industry-accepted retail rates for ADAS repairs. 

Subsequently, the latest BS10125:2022 Standard is now the ‘go to’ resource for vehicle management whilst industry-wide ADAS repair rates continue to be an area of ‘discussion’. 

Challenges 

There is no doubt that while ADAS improves road safety and brings with it considerable benefits to the road user, it can also introduce significant challenges for the claims sector and repairers. 

The differentiation between diagnostics and calibration being a fundamental starting point – the former supporting the latter but the two being clearly defined and separate tasks within the repair management process. 

Chief among them though is investment. No single diagnostics solution is suitable for all models, meaning bodyshops may have to invest in more than one system to handle all their jobs. 

Another issue is a lack of data. One train of thought centres on introducing a vehicle’s history of ADAS calibrations as part of the annual MOT – although introducing such could prove highly cost-prohibitive. Even if this were to be the case, the fundamental question for insurers of knowing whether a certain system was active (either at manufacturer level or driver level) at the time of collision remains. 

That data would be ‘seriously valuable’ in terms of assessing liability, but it too may infringe on data protection regulations with the as-yet unanswered question being: who owns that data? 

Claims 

One indirect, longer-term benefit of ADAS could be a closer working relationship between insurers and bodyshops. 

Without a comprehensive knowledge of what systems are included in each model, insurers can find themselves underwriting vehicles based on limited data. When that vehicle is then involved in a collision and the repairer feeds back information, it is often ‘too late’ as the pricing has been set. 

However, by developing closer ties and a freer exchange of data, feedback from repairers can help inform future underwriting. 

Some insurers have already initiated this synergy within their own networks to ensure data is shared both ways, improving efficiencies in repair and creating more accurate pricing and payouts.  

Cost 

There is little doubt that a lack of ADAS awareness and expertise within the industry is adding cost to the repair and, consequently, the claim. 

For one thing, as mentioned, many bodyshops either cannot afford to invest in the equipment or do not have the space in their workshop to carry out calibrations – some systems of which require nine metres of clear space around the vehicle to provide accurate results. 

As a result, many bodyshops outsource ADAS repairs to sub-contractors. In instances this can introduce additional time and cost into the process, whilst at the same time leaving bodyshops exposed to over-charging; it was suggested that some sub-contractors, either knowingly or otherwise, will carry out and charge for calibrations that might not need doing. 

These expenses are either borne by the bodyshop or billed to the insurer, who has little choice but to pass them on again to the policyholder in increased premiums.  

Future 

There is a chance that in the future regulation introduced around autonomous vehicles could also incorporate ADAS systems. 

This could have a major impact on where vehicles with ADAS technologies are repaired, liability in the event of a collision, and the relationship between vehicle manufacturers, insurers and repairers. 

Ultimately though, safety has to be the number one concern and placing the onus on any single entity is unlikely to provide a lasting and viable solution.

EU considers limiting repairs to old cars

A number of news sources have reported that the European Union is considering restricting repairs to cars over 15 years old as part of a plan to phase out older, more polluting vehicles.

The proposal, which has not been ratified, would form part of the Fit for 55 initiative, which aims to reduce net emissions by 55% by 2030.

It’s understood that older vehicles with significant damage to engines, transmissions, brakes or steering would fall under a ‘residual vehicle’ category, which would bar them from repair.

Trend Tracker report now live

Trend Tracker has published its comprehensive UK Motor Claims and Body Repair Report 2023-24.

The 266-page report includes the latest data, trends and analysis from across the motor claims and body repair sector.

Industry targets new talent during National Apprenticeship Week

The automotive industry has rallied to support National Apprenticeship Week, with businesses from all sectors promoting the sector to the next generation through a range of initiatives and events.

At the Nottingham College Apprenticeship evening, both Michael Golding, Network Manager at LV, and Managing Director of Gemini Accident Repair Centres Dave Sargeant were on the AutoRaise stand discussing automotive career opportunities to students and parents.

Elsewhere, Autocraft Group apprentices are on respected manufacturer programmes such as Volvo and VWG, Steer Automotive Group has recently unveiled its first ever Apprentice Skills Competition, which will continue throughout February, while The Vella Group has recognised the 29 apprentices on its books.

EY forecasts further growth for UK automotive

EY UK is predicting another strong year of growth in the new car market, after the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that sales grew a further 8.2% in January to 142,876 registrations.

David Borland, EY UK & Ireland Automotive Leader, said, “While the new year will undoubtedly present economic and regulatory challenges, the market is showing robust momentum as it heads into 2024 with further volume increases forecast for the year.

Repairify offer proves a huge hit

Repairify’s offer of free remote services for three months has saved bodyshops thousands of pounds since it was announced at the end of December, with hundreds of free jobs already undertaken.

The offer was introduced to support repairers amidst rising operational costs.

Sustainability a key focus for 2024

Solera APAC Managing Director Chris Iacovou has highlighted the key challenges facing the sector this year.

Talking to Digital Nation alongside other industry leaders, he said consumer demand and regulatory pressure would ramp up the focus on sustainability. Other issues addressed included enhanced cyber security, ethical use of AI, and digital skills.

TGSS formed after management buyout

Key figures in the sector have come together to launch telematics solutions provider Trak Global Security Solutions (TGSS).

TGSS has been created following a management buyout of the IMS stolen vehicle recovery division by former commercial director Dave Turnock and entrepreneur Andy Christopher.

Dave Shepherd has been appointed Chairman, while Alan Cottrill and Mark Ward have joined as non-executive directors.

Pricing tool dedicated to dealers released

cap hpi had developed a new tool to support dealers price optional extras on used vehicles. Its Options Value tool is available free to subscribers in the Valuation Anywhere product.

Silverlake supports Ukraine with first aid kits

Silverlake is partnering with charity UK Sunflower Aid to support refugees in Ukraine.

It is sending recycled vehicle first aid kits to the country as well as fuelling all the vans needed to transport them there.

To date it has collected and shipped over 1,500 first aid kits from its Sheffield site.

Strong start to 2024 for car sales

New car registrations grew for the 18th month in a row in January, rising 8.2% to 142,876 units.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders also reported that the month saw the one millionth electric vehicle sold in the UK, with 20,935 BEVs registered, a rise of 21%, taking the overall total since records began to 1,001,677.

SYNETIQ set for BTCC grid

SYNETIQ has entered a new team to compete in the British Touring Cars Championship.

Called ‘LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ,’ the team will consist of two additional cars racing alongside the Toyota Gazoo Racing UK effort under the Speedworks banner, with two-time Independents’ laurel winner Josh Cook confirmed as one of the drivers.

Used car sales enjoy robust sales year

More than seven million used cars were sold in the UK last year as the market increased by 5.1%, or 351,915 units, from 2022.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) also reported that used EV sales nearly doubled through the year, rising by 90.9% to a record 118,973.

A year in review

Research carried out by sopp+sopp has found that 41% of bodyshops said staffing was among their biggest challenges last year.

It also found that repair times had risen to an average of 42 days on average by September, while 40% of repairers said that delays in parts sourcing had impacted one in five jobs.

GLASS provides transparency

BASF has unveiled a new tool which enables businesses to measure the carbon footprint and associated costs of their paintshops.

GLASS, which stands for Global Life Cycle Assessment of Automotive Surface Solutions, covers the entire value chain from raw material extraction via pre-treatment to clearcoat as the final step of the coating process, enabling customers to optimise costs and performance, and ecological footprint. 

Thatcham Research renews call for EV battery collaboration

Thatcham Research has welcomed the House of Lords report, ‘EV strategy: rapid recharge needed,’ which has called for “the introduction of a cross-industry battery health testing standard… to provide clarity around the condition of an old or damaged battery.”

Thatcham Research has now renewed calls for the industry to work together to reduce the cost of battery repair or replacement.

A1 ADAS Solutions set for ADAS growth

A1 ADAS Solutions is gearing up for further growth in mobile ADAS calibration, diagnostics, and programming, after demand for services from its fully-equipped fleet of vans rose substantially last year.

Iain Molloy, Managing Director, said, “By 2030 it’s also estimated 44% of cars will have level 2 autonomy. This makes ADAS is a real growth area, not just for us, but for our bodyshop customers too.”

ITAS introduces updated Honda training

ITAS has updated its two-day Honda Body Structure collision repair course.

The updated course addresses changes in construction, vehicle technology and subsequent collision repair and panel replacement procedures.

Headlight partnership shines the way forward

General Motors is partnering with Llink Technologies to produce and sell remanufactured headlights. The collaboration will offer dealers and customers greater choice in headlamp replacement.

AutoCommercial unveils online platform

A new online platform for buying and selling automotive businesses and properties has gone live. AutoCommercial has been unveiled by MTBN and offers full buyer and seller confidentiality.

EV skills in the spotlight

Thatcham Research Chief Executive Jonathan Hewett had addressed the role of insurers in supporting the EV switch.

Speaking with Stephen Linklater, Claims Director at Ageas UK in the first episode of Insured Insights, he stressed the importance of having specialist staff able to repair EVs safely and the growing need to reuse damaged EV batteries.

BYD Seal U spotted on UK shores

BYD Europe has launched the BYD SEAL U, an electric SUV offering a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge.

BYD sold more than three million units worldwide last year and Thatcham Research helped prepare the UK aftermarket for rising sales from the Chinese manufacturers by hosting a two-day product showcase recently.
