TGSS formed after management buyout

Key figures in the sector have come together to launch telematics solutions provider Trak Global Security Solutions (TGSS).

TGSS has been created following a management buyout of the IMS stolen vehicle recovery division by former commercial director Dave Turnock and entrepreneur Andy Christopher.

Dave Shepherd has been appointed Chairman, while Alan Cottrill and Mark Ward have joined as non-executive directors.

Dave said, “I am proud to say I was an integral member of the senior management team that has steered IMS into being the world’s leading provider of telematic data solutions. I feel privileged to be given the opportunity of taking over the reins of the SVR division. The move enables myself and the new team to be able to dedicate 100% of our time to drive its success to a whole new level.

“The SVR division really was a sleeping giant within the IMS group but one that with the drive and passion we have for its services along with our innovative plans for new tech, we can become the sector leader. Not just here in the UK, but across Europe.”

Andy added: “IMS is a great British success that has long led field with its provision of telematic data and I am delighted the company has given Dave and myself the opportunity to take over its SVR division and entrusted us to take it to that next level. Pricing tool dedicated to dealers

cap hpi had developed a new tool to support dealers price optional extras on used vehicles.

Its Options Value tool is available free to subscribers in the Valuation Anywhere product.

Derren Martin, Director of Valuations at cap hpi, said,  “Inaccurate values have existed in the industry for years when it comes to optional extras, and many dealers will no doubt have been factoring in their own values. This aims to remedy the situation by offering more defined guidance. With Option Values we’re addressing this and ensuring that our customers no longer end up losing out or attribute their own estimated values.

“Our values will still show the value of the base vehicle, but now dealers can add in the optional extras to get a more accurate understanding of how much those should be worth on the used market. Thatcham Research hosts BYD Product Showcase

For two days in January (Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 January 2024) Thatcham Research played host to a number of invited guests for Chinese vehicle manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) Product Showcase. ARC360 was on hand to explore the products, learn more of the Thatcham Research – BYD relationship, and glean insights in the vehicle manufacturers plans for 2024.

Steer announces Lovells and Pronto acquisition

Steer Automotive Group has acquired all 11 Lovells Auto Body Centres and Pronto Accident Repair Centres.

The integration of Lovells and Pronto, which boasts approvals from the likes of BMW, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz Van, Audi, VW Skoda Seat, Kia and Hyundai, consolidates Steer Group’s current East Midlands’ footprint.

Premiums up another 12% in Q4

New figures from the Association of British Insurers have found that motor insurance premiums rose 12% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Average policies increased from £526 in the third quarter to £627 in the last three months of the year.

Taking the year as whole, prices rose by more than 25% from 2022.

Network benefits

S&G Response has highlighted the benefits of being part of its repair network, including pricing transparency, accurate triage, and ongoing support.

Its network now includes 225 repairers nationwide and 58 specialist HGV repairers.

BASF working towards sustainability standard

BASF’s Coatings division is discussing the introduction of an independent global certification standard to manage demand for sustainable accident repairs and the creation of a uniform standard based on tested criteria.

The criteria will provide a guideline to bodyshops on how to become more sustainable and help them to prepare for the increasing legal requirements such as CO2 emission reports.

GT Motive announces first price increase

GT Motive has announced it first ever price adjustment.

An eight per cent increase will be introduced form 1 March, affecting estimate creation (VQ included, VRN-VIN included), manual estimate creation, system access charges, and VIN query.

London traffic the slowest in the world

London traffic is the slowest in the world, according to a new report published by Tom Tom. It found that a typical 10k drive in London now takes 37 minutes and 20 seconds.

Globally, the report revealed that average speeds decreased in 228 of the 387 cities it analysed.

Automotive apprentices spike by 9%

Automotive apprenticeships rose by nine per cent in the first quarter of the new academic year, according to data from the Institute of the Motor Industry.

It found that the ‘Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)’ pathway was the most popular choice with 1,500 starts, while the ‘Autocare Technician’ pathway also experienced a significant 38% increase, representing 28% of all automotive apprenticeship starts.

2023 safety scores revealed

Euro NCAP has announced that of the 17 safety ratings issued for new cars last year, 14 received five stars and three received four stars.

Ben publishes new employer newsletter

Automotive charity Ben has unveiled its first newsletter dedicated to automotive employers.

The publication will highlight the services Ben offers to anyone who has worked or is working in the industry, while also sharing upcoming health and wellness awareness campaigns and other industry events.

NBRA signs digital deal with Fixico

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) has secured a digital partnership that will provide its members with comprehensive data-driven insights, enabling them to make better operational decisions and deliver improved customer service.

It is partnering with Fixico, a leading digital car repair management platform, and by integrating its technology it will deliver in-depth data insights to its 720 members to support repair optimisation and monitoring.

WorldSkills UK confirms Pearson partnership

WorldSkills UK has announced a new partnership with leading learning company Pearson.

Pearson will be the official partner of Team UK for the 47th WorldSkills Competition, which takes place in Lyon from 10–15 September.

MOT tests to remain unchanged

The UK government has confirmed that first MOTs will remain at three years after registration and annually thereafter, scrapping plans to extend MOT periods after consulting with the industry.

Meanwhile, the Institute of the Motor Industry has warned that an estimated 73% of MOT testers have still to take their Annual Assessment before the 31 March deadline.

Monolith and About:Energy announce AI partnership

A new partnership between AI software provider Monolith and battery technology innovator About:Energy could accelerate the R&D process around EV batteries for vehicle manufacturers by 12-18 months.

As part of the collaboration, the companies will deliver AI-powered battery modelling, testing and validation to provide manufacturers with deeper insights.

IGA calls for further apprenticeship funding

The Independent Garage Association has called for urgent government support for apprentices.

It has said apprenticeship numbers have fallen 37% since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017 and is now calling on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to introduce additional funding in his Spring Budget.

asTech secures ADAS partnership with Ford

asTech – driven by Repairify has announced it is now a Ford Authorised Service Provider for ADAS.

Shops in the brand’s certified collision network will now be able to use asTech technology and remote services to perform ADAS calibrations for Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

Suzuki GB has been named as the top automotive brand in the latest bi-annual Institute of Customer Service’s UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI).

It finished 15th overall in a list of 270 organisations from across all industries.

VWG unveils specialist AI lab

Volkswagen Group has launched a new AI Lab to support product development.

It will now collaborate with the tech companies in Europe, China and North America to rapidly develop and implement new AI-driven in-car innovations.

Hyundai sales top four million

Hyundai sales in 2023 reached 4,216,898 units worldwide, representing a seven per cent increase on 2022. Meanwhile, revenues were up 14%.

In the fourth quarter alone, sales topped one million, driven by a 5.3% increase in markets outside of Korea.

Volvo sets new sales high

Volvo has reported a 21% increase in revenues in 2023 with the brand setting a new sales record of 708,716 cars.

Meanwhile, EV sales rose 70% to 113,419 units.

Polestar 4 hits UK shores

The Polestar 4 is now officially available in the UK. The model is the brand’s first SUV coupe to launch without a rear window.

Thatcham Research hosts BYD Product Showcase 

For two days in January (Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 January 2024) Thatcham Research played host to a number of invited guests for Chinese vehicle manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) Product Showcase. ARC360 was on hand to explore the products, learn more of the Thatcham Research – BYD relationship, and glean insights in the vehicle manufacturers plans for 2024. 

In 2023, BYD sold a total of 3,024,417 new energy passenger vehicles worldwide. During Q4 2023 it also claimed the crown as the global leader in electric vehicle sales. Its self-proclaimed ‘the biggest electric vehicle company you’ve never heard’ is therefore fitting but all that would appear to be about to change. 

Founded in February 1995, BYD is a high tech, vertically integrated company devoted to leveraging technological innovations for a better life. Already established in more than 70 countries and 400-plus cities worldwide, the business has in excess of 600,000 employees worldwide.   

Its mission is to ‘Cool the Earth by 1°C’ by creating a complete, zero emission ecosystem powered by clean energy. Its products are already synonymous across battery-electric vehicles; buses; trucks and forklifts; the SkyRail monorail system; solar power generation and energy storage systems; and consumer electronics.  

With its automobile division now within the European market – and significant plans – the business is truly poised to establish itself as the leading New Energy Vehicle (NEV) brand. 

The day highlighted BYD’s three current Euro NCAP five-star rated models in the UK: ATTO 3 (SUV), DOLPHIN (small hatchback) and SEAL (premium saloon) with BYD and Thatcham Research experts on hand to guide delegates around the vehicles as well as learn more during a number of engaging and insightful seminars. Attendees also got the opportunity for a ‘ride experience’ in the vehicles – further demonstrating their ADAS technical capabilities and systems. 

In a move which supports the claims sector’s ongoing desire for consistency and transparency with advancing technology, safety and driver assistance systems are standard throughout model ranges on BYD vehicles. As an example, the SEAL – both Design and Excellence AWD versions – feature a plethora of systems: 

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) & Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) 
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Information (ISLI) & Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC) 
  • Predictive Collision Warning (PCW) 
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) 
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) 
  • Rear Collision Warning (RCW) 
  • Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) & Front Cross Traffic Brake (FCTB) 
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) & Rear Cross Traffic Brake (RCTB) 
  • Lane Departure Assistant (LDA) & Lane Departure Warning (LDW) 
  • Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELK) 
  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) 
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) 

Jonathan Hewett, Chief Executive, Thatcham Research explained, “We have worked with the BYD team to ensure safety, security and sustainable repairs are design attributes and in turn, that data supporting these important areas will be available to the insurance industry. This is vital as the whole mobility ecosystem embraces the seismic change to vehicles with ever more driver assistance systems, connectivity and electrified powertrains impacting risk.” 

With its vehicle range, BYD brings a host of innovation including its industry-leading Blade Battery, e-Platform 3.0 and Dual-mode hybrid power technology. 

BYD’s Blade Battery is developed on four key principles: enhanced safety, optimised strength, longer range and longer lifecycle. Arranged in an array of one rectangular flat pack, each cell serves as a structural beam to help withstand the force. The aluminium honeycomb-like structure, with high-strength panels on upper and lower side of the pack, greatly enhances the rigidity in vertical direction. 

The e-Platform 3.0 – common across all three models – is designed exclusively for pure electric vehicles creating efficient and safer new intelligent EVs. The SEAL is the first model equipped with the in-house developed CTB (cell to body) technology which integrates the Blade Battery into the car body. This ‘sandwich’ structure makes the Blade Battery both an energy storage unit and a structural component capable of withstanding significant forces. 

Adding to the three current models, BYD also has plans to introduce a hybrid SEAL U later this year – a proven strategy in other markets to support the mass market ‘transition’ to NEVs. 

Clearly, BYD already has a foothold within the UK with 24 ‘Pioneer’ stores now open across the country but 2024 will see the business significantly ramp up its presence across the market – plans for 70 dealerships by the end of the year indicating that intent.  

And with that, the aftermarket is poised to play its role – supported by Thatcham Research with information around vehicle technologies, repair strategies, known risks, technical support and standards helping to guide the sector during what promises to be evermore changing times.

NBRA signs digital deal with Fixico

The National Body Repair Association (NBRA) has secured a digital partnership that will provide its members with comprehensive data-driven insights, enabling them to make better operational decisions and deliver improved customer service.

It is partnering with Fixico, a leading digital car repair management platform, and by integrating its technology it will deliver in-depth data insights to its 720 members to support repair optimisation and monitoring.

Further, NBRA members will also be able to also open avenues for seamless allocation of repairs by their clientele, including rental, lease, insurance, OEM and fleet management companies.

Automotive apprenticeships spike by nine per cent

Automotive apprenticeships rose by nine per cent in the first quarter of the new academic year, according to data from the Institute of the Motor Industry.

It found that the ‘Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)’ pathway was the most popular choice with 1,500 starts, while the ‘Autocare Technician’ pathway also experienced a significant 38% increase, representing 28% of all automotive apprenticeship starts.

Meanwhile, there was also significant engagement of younger individuals with a substantial rise in the number of under-19s beginning automotive apprenticeships.

Emma Carrigy, Research Manager at the IMI, said, “This uplift indicates a renewed interest in both the automotive sector generally and apprenticeships as an entry route, both of which are critical to build the talent pipeline for the future.

“Our new analysis suggests automotive is gaining a broader appeal, potentially fuelled by the advanced technologies that are becoming more commonplace such as ADAS and electric vehicles. And what is particularly interesting is that there has been a pronounced uplift in intermediate-level apprenticeships which may reflect a growing demand for foundational skills and entry-level qualifications, possibly serving as a gateway to more advanced training or responding to current job market needs.”

She continued, “Compared to other industries, automotive has the 10th highest percentage increase, which is incredibly good news for a sector that has a significant skills gap to fill, And with Under 19s accounting for 64% of apprenticeship starts, there is much to be encouraged by to build the talent pipeline.”

Volkswagen ID.7 wins What Car? Safety Award

Volkswagen’s ID.7 has topped a five-car shortlist to win the 2024 What Car? Safety Award.

It won the award based on Euro NCAP test scores as well safety systems such as active and passive safety technology.

The ID.7 features a variety of innovative safety technology aimed at reducing risk to vulnerable road users such as a pop-up bonnet and sudden door opening prevention should a cyclist ride alongside the driver door. Meanwhile, its 95% adult occupant protection score was also the highest of any car that featured in the Safety Award shortlist.

A statement said: “The ID.7 provides technology to encourage safer driving and performed well across Euro NCAP’s increasingly challenging testing, from passive crash protection to active crash prevention. It is the combination of all these systems within the ID.7 that makes it stand out as the 2024 Safety Award winner.”

Also nominated were the BMW 5 Series, BYD SEAL, Lexus RZ, and Mercedes EQE SUV.

London traffic the slowest in the world

London traffic is the slowest in the world, according to a new report published by Tom Tom.

It found that a typical 10k drive in London now takes 37 minutes and 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, Dublin is the most congested city at peak times in 2023, with daily commuters having lost 153 hours to traffic.

Globally, the report revealed that average speeds decreased in 228 of the 387 cities it analysed.

Ralf-Peter Schäfer, Vice President of Traffic at TomTom, said, “With more than half of the world’s population living in urban areas, traffic congestion and its economic, ecological and health consequences have become a problem that needs to be urgently addressed”, said. “Planning the future of urban areas is essential to ongoing traffic management. Large urban areas are harnessing Big Data to plan infrastructure and development that will alleviate traffic congestion. Analysis of historical traffic data can help growing cities map more efficient road systems and plan better zoning using location intelligence. Effective implementation of planning measures such as the implementation of LEZs to reduce air pollution will benefit from data from connected cars.”

GT Motive announces first price increase

GT Motive has announced it first ever price adjustment.

An eight per cent increase will be introduced form 1 March, affecting estimate creation (VQ included, VRN-VIN included), manual estimate creation, system access charges, and VIN query.

However, customers who belong to the First Central approved network will have their increase covered as the ‘Assessment Charge’ will also increase in line to replicate the GT Motive estimate fee increase.

David Vella, Executive Director for the UK & Ireland said, “Whilst the price adjustment may present a small change to our end users and customers, it is a necessary decision for us to make in order for us to continue delivering the UK’s best estimating platform.”

He continued, “At GT Motive, we’ve always believed in putting the needs of our customers first, that’s why we made the decision during the pandemic to suspend all estimating charges for a six-month period. Since then, we have continued to innovate, collaborate, and invest in our estimating platform so our end users have access to the latest models, parts pricing, and technology.”

The increases come after GT Motive added 102 new models to the estimating platform last year, including Tesla. It also introduced a bi-directional integration with Autoflow to provide automatic price updates that can be shared across both systems instantly.
