PACTS unveils new road safety manifesto

A new road safety manifesto has been launched by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) to tackle the number of deaths and serious injuries sustained on UK roads.

More than 30,000 individuals are killed or seriously injured annually, at a societal and economic cost of approximately £43.5bn each year.

Supported by 33 leading organisations, the manifesto has identified four actions which it believes would revolutionise road safety:

These include developing a National Road Safety Strategy focused on prevention, protection, and post-collision response, establishing a Road Safety Investigation Branch to analyse road incidents, introducing Graduated Driver Licensing, and adopting Advanced Vehicle Safety Regulations.

Jamie Hassall, Executive Director of PACTS, said, “These four simple measures will be the building blocks to enable the UK to reduce the number of people that are killed and seriously injured on our roads. When we have strong leadership and a strategic approach the UK has managed to half the numbers of road deaths in a decade but since 2010 the fucus was lost and daily road deaths have remained at five a day. Investing in road safety is not just a moral duty but it’s good for peoples’ health and wellbeing, the environment, business, and the country.”

Mental health concerns driving people away from automotive

One in seven automotive workers are considering leaving the industry for financial reasons and strain on their mental health.

This is according to a new survey www.ben.org.uk/surveyreport2024 by automotive charity Ben, launched to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

It found that 27% of the 1,872 respondents had challenges managing their mental health in the last 12 months, with stress (56%), poor sleep (51%), anxiety (43%), and low mood (41%) the main issues.

Meanwhile, seven in 10 admitted money worries.

Consequently, one in seven are contemplating exiting the industry, with 29% citing low salaries at the main reason. Backing up this figure, 87% of those considering a new career are struggling with financial worries.

Rachel Clift, Health & Wellbeing Director at Ben, said, “We’re pleased to be launching our latest survey results report to highlight the health and wellbeing issues that our automotive family are facing. Our annual surveys are the ideal opportunity to hear from our automotive family so we can fully understand their struggles and then provide the support they need. We also take it as an opportunity to share these insights with employers and our industry stakeholders so we can all do more to support automotive people and their families.

“Mental health issues are affecting one in four of our automotive family and we can see that money worries are contributing to this. More people are struggling with cost-of-living pressures, with issues such as skipping meals and debt on the rise. Of course, this is likely to have an impact on their overall health and wellbeing, including both their physical and mental health.”

This year’s match, taking place on 28 June at the Football Development Centre in Norwich, will mark the final Plunkys All Star match and is being held in support of Norfolk and Waveney MIND, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and the Fire Fighters Charity, after local firefighter Carl Mills took his own life in 2022.

Steve has set a big goal this year: to raise a record amount from one match (£25,000) and beat what was raised last year.

Steve continued, “We are all keen to go out with a bang, so any donations, support and sponsorship from any individual or business will be greatly appreciated. I still have various items that can be sponsored for the big night and we are also looking for auction and raffle prizes, too.”

Ben launches personal MOTs

Automotive industry charity Ben has introduced new health checks for those working in the automotive sector.

The new service offers a personal physical and mental MOT through one-on-one conversations with a qualified health professional. The health checks also identify potential issues and suggest positive steps to support better living and working.

Anyone interested can benefit from a 20-minute physical check that covers heart rate, blood pressure, body mass index and body fat percentage, or a 30-minute physical and mental check.

To start the roll out, Ben will offer heath checks at the upcoming UK Garage and Bodyshop Event on 5-6 June at the NEC.

Rachel Clift, Health & Wellbeing Director at Ben, said, “It’s never been more important for employers to prioritise employee health and wellbeing, especially at the moment when there are multiple work and life pressures on our automotive family. Employee absences can be linked to lifestyle-related illnesses, with factors such as alcohol, obesity and smoking known to be at the root of many health conditions.

“With one in three automotive people reporting to be struggling with their mental health or wellbeing, providing a health check is a proactive step, empowering people to take control of their health and wellbeing so they can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. By booking Ben Health Checks for your employees, you’re not only investing in your people and your business, you’ll also be supporting your industry charity.”
